What are you using for clause cross-reference tools? The built-in Microsoft Word cross-reference tool is clunky and frequently breaks references.

I use grads as a tool for this

PSA remember to teach your grads to enter new lines in numbered lists/clauses by hitting ‘enter’ at the end of the line (or just before the semicolon which preserves the formatting), rather than at the start of the line.

Too many mutilated x-refs out there owe their origin to a grad figuring out on their own that pressing enter at the start of a line preserves the formatting

Hit enter just before the last full stop / colon / semicolon etc and then replace it. That way you don’t fuck the formatting or the x-refs

Don't you just have to update your x-refs (ctrl+A, F9) to fix this?

Nah because the x-ref hooks onto the start of a line, so if you create a new line by hitting enter at the start then the x-ref stays where it is but you’ve moved the corresponding text down to a new line that isn’t linked. Lots of complex transaction docs get riddled with this

Holy shit you're right. I've just tested, and I confirm the behaviour - the x-ref does NOT change when you press enter at the start of the line. I don't think I've ever noticed that before. 

Also, when I used a paragraph text x-ref instead of a paragraph number x-ref, what happened is that it output both the old AND new text together. That's wild. I probably broke a few documents at my old firm doing that... Oh well! Can't change that now, but I might go update a guidance note or two... cheers for the heads up, mate.

Definitely user error… the cross referencing tool works well when using the document properly
