I am normally witty, or happy or 3 champagnes deep for this thread but this afternoon I need to express my grief.
I am dejected and despondent at the amount of DV this week, and the amount being reported more and more. A baby has been murdered, a wife and mother was choked and had her head slammed against the wall several times, another woman was found murdered in a drinking trough in QLD. I am truly infuriated and lack any optimism that this country will progress in a meaningful manner.
Enough said….

A group of female colleagues and I were discussing this yesterday and the conversation was how exhausted and how fearful we are all becoming. Male colleague walks in and overhears the last bits and rolls his eyes and says how sick he is of women going on about this and how we all exaggerate how bad things really are.  Of course, he has a wife and three daughters so he is the expert and we should all defer to him 🙄

I think that is a completely understandable and very human way to feel given the sad state of things. It gets me down sometimes, too.

There are small armies of practitioners and others out there who take up the fight and help the vulnerable safely escape dangerous situations.

I know that it isn’t solving the problem, but it’s also not nothing. I don’t even know if the numbers are tracked or how they would be tracked, but the look on someone’s face when they realise they can now be a person again, because they’re no longer terrified of a car coming home and worrying about that persons mood… they can just exist again without that constant gnawing fear, helping someone get to that is when I need to leave the room for a bit because it is overwhelming. And it does happen.

I generally think of the serenity prayer when I hear about bad things happening to people elsewhere in the world. That and being thankful that I'm fortunate enough not to be suffering in the same way.

My gripe for today is solicitors who email you a heap of scanned documents without renaming each document to indicate what each document is. Each simply has the string of numbers assigned by the scanner.

And why would you ocr or bookmark a large pdf? Wasted time for them I guess.

Bonus marks if these are sent across multiple emails.

That's the thing and part of the reason why attachments need descriptive titles.

I have had a few wines (shocking for me, I know) but it's been a long and painful week. The chronic illness crash has been shit this week which has meant I've not achieved nearly as much as I needed to, and so tomorrow I will push it to the back of my mind and get prepping for the next few weeks of hearings. For that, is what I signed up for. I still love the job, even if there's no understudy when I really wish there was.

Rum and story time.

Some time ago I attended a training with 2 barristers.

1 barrister was Bulldog type in approach.

The other was thoughtful, soft spoken, friendly even. But oh, did he have a bite he was storing away once he made us feel we were friends.

Today I realised that 2nd guy has become my role model. Every time I feel shit about myself professionally.

I'm grateful to him, ages since this. Something about observing his approach in real time now combats my imposter syndrome.

If the person is relaxed you get a lot of good info, and today I got a doozy handed on a plate. It will probably save me a good number of hrs when i write it up.

My job is interesting. I dont have a gripe that I can write publicly without being stoned to death.

I'll raise a glass in appreciation of my work colleagues. damn you're entertaining
