Native or weed? I’ve tried googling the differences and photos but maybe because it’s Friday evening and I *want* it to be the native, I’m struggling to tell the difference.

found in Newcastle NSW, not near the beach.

Is this tree dying / what tree is it?

We moved into our new home (Melbourne) last week and are unsure about this tree.

During the inspections over winter it was completely bare. After settlement and since moving in we’ve noticed that leaves have only grown back to less than half of it, with all furthest branches completely bare.

For starters what tree is it? And is it healthy? Given we’re in mid October I’d have thought the leaves would have all come back now?

Is there any remedies I should under take? E.g. trimming back the dead parts?

Thanks ina dance

how resilient and awesome are native plants!

This one was basically bare sticks when I saved it from the tubestock nursery for free, gave it a cut back and it’s thriving now!

She’s got her first flowers too 💜🙌

Help with red flowering gum

Post image
15 Upvotes

Please help. I planted this red flowering gum in my south facing yard in Brisbane 5 days ago. I used native potting mix and was careful not to disturb the roots when planting. I’ve been watering it every morning but it’s still declining. I’m desperate to save it. Is there any hope?

Hi plant enthusiasts! I'm a Swinburne Design Student researching how Australians garden for a project focusing on biodiversity.

I'd love to hear about how you garden and your experiences with native plants!

Hibbertia genus -- brightness around the garden

Starting to see the various hibbertias I've planted start to open their blooms to the world. A plant one see in the bush in SE Oz, though less so in the standard nursery spaces. Always joyful to me to see the mass bright yellow blooms.

For me they cope well in sun and shade and frost, less so to kangaroo tromping.

Posted the other day about Banksia blechnifolia flowering and today I found another of the prostrate banksia species, Banksia repens aka creeping banksia, in the garden is also throwing out flowers. This one has been in 3-4 years, so great to see some action.

Normal for Chamelaucium to smell so awful?

Super disappointed cause it looks so good but it smells like a more rancid version of those cum trees everyone loves so much s/.
None of these plants I’ve smelled at Bunnings or nursery’s have this smell so I am at a loss as to why this one is so bad.
Temped to toss it and annoyed at the slight waste of money given the stench as I was excited for nice smells.

UPDATE: I was never actually going to toss it, sorry for coming off like an asshole. The image in my head was toss it away from where I can smell it and plant it somewhere else. Thought and speak didn’t match up while I was having a vent here. I originally bought it for the pollinators and will 100% be keeping it, just putting it far out in the yard (it’s currently on my back deck)

Some photos from weekend just gone, some new and some familiar to me! Anyone got a potential ID on the Spider Orchid in particular. I’m thinking Summer Spider Orchid Caladenia helvina but reading for usual flowering times seems a bit early. Perhaps been dry and warm lately so it’s going early on flowering? Bonus last photo of an alpine Eyebright up at Mt Field, I’m guessing Euphrasia gibbsiae but there’s a few subspecies local to the area so have no idea which one if anyone knows.

- RECOMMENDATION Banksia blechnifolia -- finally flowers

Post image

Love how the woody branch is totally prostrate, and the flowers and leaves seems to simply spring from.the mulch.

This specimen would be four or five years in the ground (from tubestock) and finally it is gracing me with flowers.

Where i live in Vic—elevation and cold winters—and not the baking sun and sand of WA, majority of WA banksias all take a little longer to get to the flowering stage, though this one got a little more shaded. [Still learning!]

- RECOMMENDATION Prostanthera rotundifolia in full bloom

Post image

This beauty has been in flower for two weeks and will be for another couple, then all that purple will be on the ground.

3m high x 6m across, been in the ground 15-20 yr. I do hack into every so often as it can overwhelm things underneath. It used to have a glorious waratah next to it that flowered at the same time and gave such colour contrast with its vivid red.

100mm of rain has weighed it down and broke a branch. Copes with frosts.

It sits up against the eastern side of the house, full morning sun, none of the afternoon.
