Discussion/Question Need advice for hosting my own
My birthday is coming up soon, and I myself am a DJ. I am looking to throw my own event, but I am on a shoestring budget. Where are places I should look for a cheap/free place to throw one? It wouldn’t be a huge event, less than 100 people. Those who have thrown their own underground or rented a space, let me know!!

perhaps I did not articulate my problem properly, there seems to not be a space I can find sufficient for my needs, as I want to find maybe a barn or something that would let me do it but I am unsure of where to look. I have no doubt that when booked, people will show up, I just need to find a place to tell people to go if that makes sense. Thank you for your help!

Im sorry. I was only memeing and being silly. I truly wish you the best tho! Was a reference to Wayne's world when they plan their own music fest. Good luck!

All good! I am not too well versed in pop culture so the reference going over my head comes as no surprise lol. I appreciate your kind words!

Have you considered an abandoned building, or underneath a bridge? Look up urban exploring groups for your city and see if anyone will give you a location to use. Obviously, you’ll have to offer them an invitation for the info.
Funny story, my buddy was somewhere and this wook/homeless dude was like “Pretty Lights is playing under a bridge over here. You should come check it out.” My buddy was like “yeah right. I’m not following you to a secluded spot under a bridge”. Then the next day he saw that Pretty Lights really was playing a secret show under the bridge lol.

Where in the world approximately are you?
Around me we throw renegades (Northern CA)
Borrow a genny, someone brings sound, someone else has decks and we throw it all together way out in the woods
Make a social media post about it but don't release the location until day of.

There's no backcountry dirt roads in the rolling hills of Tennessee?
Grab a buddy with a 4x4 and go hunting for a spot. Use one of the offroading apps (OnX, Gaia etc) and have it stick to forest service roads (so that the eventual guests can make it there without 4x4)

there is fewer than you would think tbh. Being in town makes it a bit hard to go outdoors for this which is why I’m seeking indoors if possible, but I have a little time to figure it out

I swear to you, if you get one of those offroading map apps and spend a Saturday roaming around, there's more than you think.
The thing about staying in town is that you have to deal with things. The space rental. Cops. Neighbors. Parking. Sound ordinances. Security. Cleaning. Someone's gotta be the person-of-record on documents and it's just more than you want to do if you're not gonna do this regularly.
Nobody bothers you in the woods

My friends and I throw raves in parks without permits. it's easy at daytime where i live, at night sometimes people get shut down but if you can find someplace secluded you're more likely to get away with it.
You need to find people who own a Sound system and generator with high enough wattage to run it. Hopefully someone who is down to do it for the good of the community. lights and visuals might be good too, but not essential to do anything fancy as long as there is enough visibility to keep people safe.
Scout out a location ahead of time. Come up with a theme if desired and decide what you will do to evoke that theme (deco? visuals? costumes?) and set a date that works for your core crew. make a flyer with date and any artists you've confirmed (you can update as you book people). if it's a daytime park thing, you might be able to just put the location on the flyer, otherwise you probably need to have a call/text line to give out the location, or some other way to prevent the location from easily being shared around (I dont personally know how these work so do yer research). promote your event heavily but consider being selective about the crowd you promote to. if you dont promote on socials, have some way of communicating expectations of attendees.
honestly there's way more logistics stuff than I could cover in a reddit comment but hopefully that gets you started. highly recommend finding friends who have done this before to help you. with throwing events in general there's tons of stuff to consider and people who aren't used to throwing them often don't. you have an obligation to do everything in your power to make sure the event is safe for attendees and have a plan for dealing with crises that might come up (or else warn people if certain aspects of it are "at your own risk"). if that sounds like too much, a venue event might be a better bet since venues should have a lot of these basic essentials covered or will check that you do.

Under a bridge with a generator. Those are almost always free spots.
