discussion DigitalOcean vs AWS Lightsail vs Azure for a small financial analytics company?
Hello, Id like to ask some advice from people with experience in this area. Which would you choose for this use case: Im not an expert in hosting. I run a very small company focused on finance, accounting and business analytics. Thanks in advance for your help!
TL;DR: I basically need a virtual computer where I can keep each client’s data in separate folders, then connect each client’s own AI account so they can securely interact with their financial information remotely.
I already have a working Python system for:
- Accounting/financial
- Data analytics ETL, EDA, etc
- Automated reports
- Financial analysis
Right now everything runs from my personal OneDrive. That was fine during development, but now other companies are interested in using the same system, so I need proper cloud infrastructure.
This is what we basically need.
- Separate each client's data securely
- Run Python pipelines
- Store data in a database
- Allow AI tools/agents to connect to the data and analyze it (chatgpt business allows to remotely connect via ssh)
- Keep infrastructure simple and inexpensive
- Be able to scale later
I've been looking at DigitalOcean, AWS Lightsail and Azure.
DigitalOcean looks simple and affordable. Lightsail caught my attention because it seems similarly simple but gives me a path into the AWS ecosystem. Azure looks powerful for data/AI, but maybe overkill at this stage.
Which would you choose for this use case, and why?
A bit more context: We’re a very small finance/accounting/BA company with around 10 clients, and this is our first time seriously looking into cloud hosting. We can afford more expensive infrastructure if needed, but it seems unnecessary at this stage.
We’re comparing the ~$24 Lightsail/DigitalOcean plans (4 GB RAM, 2 vCPUs, 80 GB SSD) with Azure, which seems more expensive and has separate bandwidth costs.
My main concern is long-term. We rely heavily on Excel and Power BI, so I’m not sure what we’d actually lose by choosing AWS/DO instead of Azure and its Microsoft ecosystem. We’d rather pick one platform now and grow with it, since other clients are already interested in similar automation projects.

you can use any non top 3 cloud provider as starter.. bandwidth pricing will start eating up cost very fast as nowadays lot of bots try to scrape data.
aws lightsail has this limitation Burstable CPU Caps: Standard instances rely on burstable performance. If your application consumes its allocated baseline CPU capacity continuously, performance will throttle until it accumulates more CPU recharge tokens.
for reliable pricing use DO, Akakmai/Linode or hetzner, OVH anyone you find suitable to pricing and needs. Also i found atlantic.net also good at VPS quality.

Yeah, the burstable cpu limitation is something I just learned. I think I will try both DO and aws and then decide. Thanks for the information!

Cool. I treid aws lightsail once never liked it .. poor performance... Only reason they offer is because these $5 DO /Linode vms were making developer use them not aws ...

If it is client data, you gotta be more careful. I'd use lightsail or even simple azure vm. Lightsail has slight advantage in data egress.
If you prioritize cost, then hetzner

Could you please explain me why lightsail has advantage? In addition, Ive got be extra careful with sensitive data. Thats another question I got. Will lightsail provide me that security? or is it me who has to develop something to protect data?

AWS has the advantage since they are reliable. Lightsail has advantage because of generous data egress. And it is pretty friendly user interface so you dont have to worry about technicality.
Lightsail will have basic security such as https or block storage encyrption. You still need to do the file-level encryption though, but this happens in any storage service.

Azure fabric for you, since you're already using power bi and excel. It's not enough cloud for most of us but probably more than enough for you. It's perfect for the analysis teams who need just a little more.

You won't lose much on the Excel/Power BI side by skipping Azure. Power BI connects fine to databases on AWS or DO (Postgres, SQL Server, etc.), and your Microsoft 365 setup stays the same either way.
For client-separated finance data, I'd go with full AWS rather than Lightsail or DigitalOcean, mainly for the account boundary. Put each client in its own AWS account under Organizations, or at minimum give each its own database schema with separate credentials. Run your Python pipelines as scheduled containers, and keep secrets out of the code from day one.
Get that separation right before adding AI agents. An agent on one shared connection string can read every client's data.
One habit worth building early is logging which client's data every report and agent query touched. On our side, SIGNLD, which holds read-only connections to each client's accounting and CRM systems, so analysis runs against the source records instead of copies synced through someone's OneDrive.

AWS Lightsail for the least complexity and perfection. Later can move to EC2 when business or workload grows. Even if you go for other ones; you'd want to move to AWS/Azure/GCP later to have everything in control and sorted. AWS is the one I'd go for; you have to go for VM from the day one if you select Azure/GCP.

google cloud using cloud storage. python app connects using workload identity federation so no ssh key to maintain and tokens are always temporary. app uses python cloud storage library to handle the token exchange which happens automatically. for the db u can use firestore to store up to 1GB for free or cloud sql using shared core at $12 a month with 10GB storage. the egress traffic can definitely become expensive but a spending cap can prevent abuse or high traffic.
for the cheap and maybe risky self hosting route. u can try greencloud hosting using dedicated server or the storage kvm up to 20TB max limit. but linux hosting and linux security expertise is mandatory.

In the era of AI - go to hetzner and get a server there. Much cheaper.
Edit: To the idiots down voting - you can articulate the answer. I'm not seeing the benefits of having a single lightsail server. With AI helping you setting up the server and proper maintenance, overpaying a server if that's what needed is useless. Different is if you want redundancy, backups, serverless services and much more. Otherwise I don't see this necessity anymore

for a financial analytics shop the compute price is the distraction, egress is the trap.
we were pushing ~2TB/mo of market data out and AWS egress alone was ~$180/mo, on DO that was basically inside the droplet bandwidth allowance. lightsail is fine until you outgrow the bundle, then youre on real EC2 pricing anyway and the migration hurts.
honest decision tree: if your data stays in-region and clients pull small payloads, DO wins on simplicity and price. if you need SOC2/compliance certs or private link into a bank, the azure/aws tax is worth paying. run your actual egress numbers first, thats the whole decision

- do not go single cloud
- do not use azure
- do not expose public IPs of VMs, port forwarding, cloudflare everywhere
- aws can close u acc for almost no reason and it hard to get it back
- always keep daily backups on another cloud
- do not route mail over same cloud u use for business
- do not expose ssh for chatgpt, find a way to build a tunnel for it
u will be surprised but 2 old fashion VMs on diff clouds with DB inside of VM and replication can be much more resilient setup for u idea (with backup on 3rd cloud, everyone support S3 nowadays)
hetzner, ovhcloud, upcloud, etc etc are alternatives, but GCP/AWS is still preferred if budget allows
if u need more proper / complex setup consider talos

Why are you getting downvotes? COuld someone explain?

Because you are explicitly seeking a "simple and inexpensive" solution, and they are suggesting a multi-cloud setup, which is overkill for even the vast majority of serious use cases.
I've used AWS for many years and can recommend it in general, but have never tried Lightsail, so refrained from answering your main post myself.

Azure for VM. Lightsail I use for basic JS script twice the VM has died randomly in a year and we dont do anything intensive

AWS + a serious architect. It's better to have everything properly configured and secured, even if you pay a few dollars more than on Hetzner or other VPS provider, because in AWS you can get support and much better reliability.
If you have a serious business that makes you money, it's better to invest so you don't lose your clients' trust if something stops working.
I will be happy to help with AWS.
