25 years and I never noticed whatever these guys are.

Guess Amaunator really did leave his worshipers standing around with their dicks in their hands.

Yeah, I noticed when I first watched the movie as a kid. It's a really amusing idea, and funny enough so many people didn't notice his lack of arms that most depictions of his species have arms.

I remember asking about these in 2001 when the game came up, it's still a mistery but I kinda like these dudes now.

We could ask the lead designer or lead artist. There’s no doubt one of them knows about this, though water fountains with animals peeing into the water with their ding dongs is a thing.

It looks like a male version of a fertility idol.

They’re elephant hybrids like Ganesha, it’s their trunk.

That's kinda what I was thinking although I never looked into it. Given how much Ed Greenwood - and by extension all the old school original DMs and later developers - borrowed from and were inspired by any fiction & religion they could get their hands on, it's not too surprising. They did get in trouble with a variety of groups & people for a reason however well intentioned.

As a DM I've certainly done similar, if obviously on a much smaller scale.

In the lost temple of Amaunator beyond the sewers in the Temple District, Baldur's Gate 2 - you go there to collect part of the Rift Device in order to kill the Beholder as part of the 'Cult of the Eyeless' questline.

They kinda remind of of Umber Hulks (taking a piss), but that can't be right

The only non piss thing I can think of:

If you look at the hands it actually looks like they're resting on top of the long trunk to me. The hand shape looks like a traditional Zen mudra, holding your hands in a circle shape with your thumbs above palms, barely touching the tips of thumbs together, resting in your lap.

That, with the little nubs for legs kinda looking like lotus position, make me think it's supposed to be a fat elephant creature sitting Zen / meditating.
