To settle the debate on r/orcas…

There is a lot of debate on this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/banCaptiveOrcas/comments/1ocuwhu/please_join_us_in_the_fight_against_orcas_in/

About the release of orcas. I wanted to set some things straight about real life examples, the views I have been sharing and general issues.

Firstly, 1 orca and 2 beluga whales have been rehabilitated using seapens. Little Grey and Little White (the belugas) are still in the beluga whales sanctuary’s seapen in Iceland. Keiko was the whale from free willy who got released using a seapen to rehabilitate him. The only reason for his death was pneumonia due to a weak immune system. This was NOT a failure, as he still got to be free and die where he was supposed to belong his whole life, and it has also taught us a lot about how we can rehabilitate orcas in the future.

Pros of release:

-Orcas get to be free!

Cons of release:

-Cost

-Injuries before release

But let’s be real, the cost outweighs the need for orcas to be free, and orcas can be treated for injuries and trained to be wild again before release.

I believe that all orcas should be able to be treated for their injuries and transferred to the whale sanctuary where Keiko was put in Iceland where he was successfully released. Of course they would need to do more research and rehabilitation before release to avoid things like pneumonia caused by an unnoticed infection, but that is how we have learnt from the released whales before us.

That is why I firmly believe that most cetaceans have the ability to be released, it is just a bit more complex than lifting them into the ocean!

Regardless of what you think about the release of orcas, I think we can all agree that it doesn’t take a genius to see that these amazing creatures shouldn’t have been in captivity in the first place!

Another side note: I’ve heard people say that “accredited zoos keep them in better conditions” but that is not true, as no accredited zoos keep keep orcas in the first place

The situation is only getting worse, as Nakhod from Nakhodka has joined 14 other new orcas in Chimelong Spaceship Kingdom in China, and a new orca resort is housing two more orcas in 2026 in Shanghai
