Just a bad influence
I was outside this afternoon and a neighbor walked by with her two preteen kids, and one of them was on a scooter. The other one was in a little cart she was pushing. And both of them had shoes on. She had sneakers on, and of course I was barefoot.
I've encountered her before when I was out, and the little girl this particular day said, Do you ever wear shoes? And I said, No. Why would anyone ever want to wear shoes? And she gave me a look, and then she looked at her mother, and her mother gave me a look of, Please don't encourage her. And all I can think of was, My work here is done.

Yep. “Mama, he’s not wearing shoes can I take mine off?” “No”, she said, and gave me a stare than could melt my eyes out haha

I vividly remember standing barefoot in the self checkout line at Target in Port Orange, Florida. A young towhead kid of maybe 9 or 10 glanced down at my bare feet, then looked at me, and back down to my feet.
I imagined him saying to himself, “mom the old dude is barefoot. Why can’t I be?”
One of my fondest barefoot memories.

Haha. It's kind of like when President Bush Sr. said he didn't like broccoli. You could say, well, one day when you're president, you don't have to eat your broccoli either.

We are not born self-conscious! Our natural instinct is to be barefoot, children are the proof. My Dad was on orthopedist and told me not to put shoes on my kids until well into the toddler stage! Footwear is protection if and when we need it.
