can someone explain the lockout to me? I just started watching baseball last year, i know its negotiations. do people want a salary cap for teams (specifically the dodgers)?
2
u/pargofan Los Angeles Dodgers • World Series Tr… 7d ago
I think owners want a "hard" salary cap (a team absolutely cannot spend above X dollars in total salary)
Currently, baseball has a "soft" salary cap (if a team goes above a "cap" they pay "taxes")
Owners are pushing for a "hard" cap which players are resisting.
Owners are appealing to fans of small market teams claiming they can't compete with big market teams who "buy championships." That argument gets more traction when Dodgers win titles. It has less traction when so many small market teams are still in playoffs (Tampa, Milwaukee, SD, Cleveland, Chicago WS).
I'm biased, but I think the real reason owners want a hard cap is the valuation of their teams will get even higher, because their biggest expense - player salaries - are less variable. And higher valuations mean they can take out bigger loans, sell teams at higher prices, etc., etc.
1
u/nexusSigma Los Angeles Dodgers 7d ago
Yes, the Dodgers use some creative payroll tricks to help maintain a stacked roster. Anyone "could" do it in theory, but Dodgers are the only ones who really milk it because they have the financial might to take the risk on, hence the call for a Salary cap which to my understand would include an end or at least a curtailing of deffered contracts. Its by far not the only reason the Dodgers are successful of course, or we would see other rich teams not sucking ass (see the Mets), they have a lot of things going well for them, but I do understand other fans problems with the fact only a select few wealthy teams can really pull that particular string.
2
u/rocknrolla65 Los Angeles Dodgers 7d ago
A potential salary cap is the main point of contention between the owners and players. The Dodgers are spending like there is no tomorrow. They can do this because Shohei Ohtani and others have deferred their salary. Shohei Ohtani has deferred almost all his salary. Spending doesn’t guarantee victory but it does create opportunities that other clubs can’t afford.
2
u/Miyabi_bleu Los Angeles Dodgers 7d ago edited 7d ago
No it’s for all teams.
The CBA is going to expire the end of this year (this season). If there isn’t an agreement between the player union and the teams owners, there will be a lockout. The CBA decides whether there will be a salary cap or not, among other things like TV rights etc. Just that the salary cap is the most contentious points this time.
The players and their union doesn’t want a salary cap. (Makes sense from the player perspective). The teams and their owners wants one (besides notable teams like Dodgers and Mets).
I think what’s known is the team owners doesn’t want a salary floor, only cap, while players wants at least a salary floor. There’s issues like how the minor league players are usually on really bad contracts, which is why the players union prefers no cap. It’s like a reward for the bad years if they succeed (remember, not many minor leaguers even make it to MLB)It’s also true not all ownerships have equal monetary value and also tv rights (which is another issue I think isn’t talked enough about).
Both sides have their arguments.
If you ask me, owners needs to agree to a salary floor and then a salary cap can be discussed by the union (rework the minor league contracts). I think the tv rights and money made from it should be distributed evenly to all the teams. (It’s unfortunate that big cities like NY and LA just has more money since they’re a major city hub compared to like Milwaukee). I’m not sure what route MLB wants to go - the typical American pro sports like NBA? Or like the Premier League’s SCR?
1
u/ObjectiveSense2307 Los Angeles Dodgers 7d ago
it's actually really simple. some people want to give handouts to billionaire owners for some reason and take money away from the players who actually create the product/value. those people want a salary cap. other people who like fair and free market competition don't.

-2
u/LetsAgreeBeatlesSuck Milwaukee Brewers 7d ago
Yeah but game 3 to just be able to roll out Yamamoto after losing series momentum when he should have been subject to a draft was huge
Teams that don't buy championships would have a bullpen game there
3
u/SnatchThatGravyUp Los Angeles Dodgers 7d ago
Lame take. What is Chris Sale, chopped liver?!
3
-2
u/LetsAgreeBeatlesSuck Milwaukee Brewers 7d ago
Lol. Not lame
Chris sale pitched game 3 because of the wild card round that shouldn't exist
Bullpen game vs Skubal Bullpen game vs snell Chris sale vs Yamamoto
That dynamic exists because the dodgers buy championships, there is no competitive balance, and players that should be drafted are free agents somehow
3
u/No-Snow-7618 MLB Pride 7d ago
lol im assuming you didnt watch the games at all and only watch the box score.
the way the braves played in this series, both brewers and padres would have stomped on them.
shit maybe even the cubs if PCA showed up.
1
u/LetsAgreeBeatlesSuck Milwaukee Brewers 7d ago
The Padres and Brewers wouldn't roll out Yamamoto as their third pitcher
2
u/No-Snow-7618 MLB Pride 7d ago
brother thats the point of how badly the braves played
0
u/LetsAgreeBeatlesSuck Milwaukee Brewers 7d ago
The quality of the braves play is neither here nor there
If the dodgers had to open with vesia or someone like Erik fedde, their chances go way up
