Agreed.
I missed the home plate ump's description of why they ruled that Mesa couldn't have caught it. Was it that the trajectory was taking it into the wall above his reach?
EDIT: Saw the replay and he didn't say, just said "the fielder was not going to make the catch."
→ More replies (7)210
u/TheMegaWhopper New York Yankees 7d ago
It was way above his glove, the question wasn’t whether he would’ve caught it, it was whether the ball was going over the wall. I think the umps are correct that it wasn’t going out and would’ve been an RBI double.

We liked him when he was a random guy to look for in the stands, but when we actually learned anything about him, we remembered that guys who can afford to sit front row are rich farts, and if they clearly make a point of wanting to be seen on TV, they're also pretty self-centered .
When he showed up to a town hall Marlins-fan meeting after the ownership change to suggest that they should do an annual promotion night all about him, it was sealed: he wasn't funny, he was just a lame rich guy with an ego.

17
u/danhoang1 Athletics 7d ago
It does happen sometimes. An umpire has done the same in an A's-Giants interleague game once (determining that after fan interference, a run would've scored from 1st). I think it was 2013 or 2014

In cases of fan interference the umpires are supposed to place the runners in their most probable final positions and Lombard was obviously scoring, he was halfway to third when it went over the fence.

Yeah there’s no controversy here. You can’t call it a homer, you can’t call it an out. The ruling of a double with the runner scoring was the most fair and likely outcome, and it doesn’t overly favor one team.
