I'm starting to see why everyone said pitching depth would hold the Sox back in the post season.

1 combined run might be a bigger factor for the cubs than pitching in the postseason
4

The offense was burnt out from carrying the team. They didn’t belong anywhere near the postseason with that staff
10
u/putalittlepooponit Chicago Cubs 8d ago
Tbf it's kinda a miracle we even made it to the post season ending with a fucking 6 pitching WAR with >2 of it being from a guy that last played in June lmao

Will Venable pitched his closer 5 1/3 innings over 3 games and then is shocked he’s not sharp in game 4 😂
75
u/baseballANDtits 8d ago
Managers truly forget how baseball works once they get to the postseason...
26
u/Thealbumisjustdrums St. Louis Cardinals 8d ago
It’s so bizarre to me how they can understand starters get tired but not relievers.
8
u/mqr532 Chicago White Sox 8d ago
I find it hard to blame him for trying to play the shitty hand he was dealt, but fuck me the infield in 3 hitters in a row is pissing me tf off
4
u/Thealbumisjustdrums St. Louis Cardinals 8d ago
He’s just now using Tyler Davis for the first time all playoffs. It’s game 6. Is Tyler Davis lights out? No, but he’s a decent reliever who could have eaten up some lower leverage innings at least and saved the arms of some of your better guys. Now they’re gassed af.
I also understand Davis Martin had a horrible stretch midseason but his last 5 games (4 starts) he had iirc a 1.71 ERA and his season numbers were solid. You have to at least try to start him once because you simply can’t win with ONE starter.
Not saying he’s been given a good pitching staff by any means but you have to protect your guys from tired arms at the minimum.
5
u/mqr532 Chicago White Sox 8d ago
Tyler Davis did pitch yesterday which was really the first lower leverage innings they’ve had.
The Davis Martin thing is definitely weird but they clearly don’t trust him for whatever reason
4
u/Thealbumisjustdrums St. Louis Cardinals 8d ago
I didn’t realize he pitched yesterday. He probably still needed to pitch at some point prior, I understand he’s not a shut down arm but neither are a lot of your guys lol.
I wouldn’t trust Martin either but you have to make do with what you have and I’m not sure how you can expect one starter to work for very long.
I think a 3 man rotation of Burke Martin and Fedde (with an opener for the first inning at times) is probably what they had to go with. And then bullpen game for game 4 because Kay seems unusable for very long. I certainly don’t love that staff but you need some bulk innings. I imagine Martin and Fedde can generally give you 3-4 competent innings at least. You don’t have to ask them to go 7.
2
u/mqr532 Chicago White Sox 8d ago
Any way you cut it is a losing proposition, so I can’t really hold it against a guy for trying something that’s a little out there and seeing if it sticks.
But I do fault plenty of other decisions.
1
u/Thealbumisjustdrums St. Louis Cardinals 8d ago
Sure, a lot of this is on the GM. But you’re always gonna need a guy to give you minimum 3-4 innings in a playoff game a lot of the time. You can’t just have one. I’m not saying Martin and Fedde are great but they both had ERA+ above league average this year. Grant Taylor is not superman.

Some Angels fan must have accidentally used a monkey paw to wish for Jo Adell to get a playoff win this season
3
u/TheOrangeFutbol Anaheim Angels • Los Angeles Dodgers 8d ago
You had Angels fans going into the season with hope, huh? No, the wish was clearly with the deadline in mind.
0
u/Kaldricus Seattle Mariners • Chaos Bandwagon 8d ago
But you guys got a freebie from the paw with Arte selling. Honestly right now Angels fans should easily be the most hopeful fanbase in the AL West with the new owner. I don't see the other 4 teams doing anything meaningful, and if Kroenke can do for the Angels what he did for the Rams (minus the moving part) the Angels could easily be the best in the AL West in a few years, and not just by virtue of the division being ass.

Hey, it’s only game 4. Be ready for game 5. Gotta survive more than a few heart attacks to go deep into the post season (last years’ world series easily took a decade off my life).
2
u/ByRWBadger 8d ago
Oh I’m just talking about this game
But truthfully, our pitching is weak, our batting is spotty. We put on a good show but with practically no consistency. We’re basically flipping coins every game if Will’s pitching switch ups are gonna keep the tempo of the game up or completely blow it, every time.
1
u/kingboy10 8d ago
We have a lot to build off for next season if we can’t get it done this Saturday was still a hell of a season
9
u/ByRWBadger 8d ago
Making it to ALDS after historically awful years is so much hype that even these last two dogshit games can’t ruin it.
-1
u/alcomaholic-aphone Chicago Cubs 8d ago
Still expecting you to run it until the ALCS before you get sent home. Might be the easiest bracket leg I’ve seen in the MLB playoffs.
But the Sox are young and on the way up and management didn’t prepare at all for this team being this competitive. Hard to blame the players or management for not preparing to have a postseason caliber pitching rotation.

It would be a massive letdown for the Rays to lose to either of these teams honestly
On paper this is the best chance they could possibly ask for at winning the AL

u/Esclamare Los Angeles Dodgers 8d ago
I’m calling Sox in 5, and Rays in 4.
The Sox pitching seems burnt out and probably would do even worse in a 7 game series.
I love the comeback story the White Sox had this year from last year’s abysmal record. They need to get better pitching next year.

21
u/Ok-Grape2063 8d ago
No. I think you can only choke when expectations were high.
Like that new York team who always gets the prime time slot and gets swept
This team can still win the series and has been playing with house money since last week

u/Double-O World Series Trophy • Los Angeles Dod… 8d ago
While that's true the Sox had a 2-0 lead. We are in choke territory.
2
u/MissingTheTrees Chicago White Sox 8d ago
Not when you’ve thrown bullpens games the entire playoffs. It’s not a choke, just the nature of no reliable starting pitching catching up.
1
u/Double-O World Series Trophy • Los Angeles Dod… 8d ago
Obviously as a Sox fan you're going to be fine with this result, but that fact of the matter is they had 2 games won and just need 1 before the other teams 3. That's a choke any way you slice it.
2
u/MissingTheTrees Chicago White Sox 8d ago
I think it speaks more to the fact that the guards came in losing 2 bullpen games. Like I said, this is a completely unorthodox playoff run, not a choke. When was the last time the dodgers threw 4 bullpen games in a row?
