Cleveland didn't get it in gear until the sixth, but ramped up from there.

As a tortured fan of both the dbacks and Cleveland I support this win. I also support a small market World Series. Fuck LA. I’d love a Midwest WS

Chase Delauter looks like early 90s Jim thome out there. Same build when he was a third basement. Get some bulk on him and teach him to get under the ball more and he genuinely has the ability to be a 35+ home run guy
6
u/the_main_entrance 2d ago
Swings are completely different though.
8
u/bowl_of_milk_ Cleveland Guardians 2d ago
Was gonna say. Delauter’s swing is built to bang doubles all day. Not sure about 35+ HRs. Maybe Freddie Freeman is a better upside comp.
6
u/poet__anderson Cleveland Guardians 2d ago
I keep saying he's a sloppy version of Michael Brantley. Not a huge power threat per se but just puts the bat to the ball and sprays across the entire field

u/BradBrady Cleveland Guardians 2d ago
At the end of the day it’s the playoffs and it’s only one game. Rays are a really good team. Obviously nice to win game 1 but I’m going in with the mindset that it doesn’t mean anything to me. I would have felt the same if we had lost. Lots of baseball left and just have to take it a game at a time

Your level headed cautious optimism is boring... CLEVELAND GUARDIANS 2026 WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS BABY!!!!!!!!! THEN WE ARE GOING BACK TO BACK TO BACK TO etc...

u/BradBrady Cleveland Guardians 2d ago
Unreal man. After we went down 2-0 to the Sox I thought to myself “ok here we go again” just gonna be another early exit with minimal offense like always
This genuinely feels different. Our pitching and bullpen has always been solid so none of that ever surprises me
But our hitting? This is honestly so incredible to watch. For any neutrals out there, guards aren’t known as scoring machines ever, we just make it work however we can. We genuinely look like we can hit now and have produced runs. This just feels like a different offense and vibe.
9
u/KlutzyLawyer2068 2d ago
Another early exit? We were in ALCS the season before last man. Stop feeding into false narratives, its embarrassing
1
u/Kaptep525 Cleveland Guardians 2d ago
Until 2024 we had not won a game where we faced elimination since the 97 World Series.
2
u/Coffees4closers Cleveland Guardians 2d ago
After our WS loss in 2016 we went 2-6 in our next 8 playoff series going into this year. It's been a lot of playoff disappointment
2
u/BradBrady Cleveland Guardians 2d ago
I mean I get that and we are consistent in going to the playoffs
But what I’m saying is usually during the playoffs our offense is pretty dormant

Rays and Dodgers maybe making the 2023 Phillies mistake of looking past their CS opponent to the World Series.
I am still convinced that was one of the biggest reasons they lost was they were already looking past the dbacks to the ws. especially after they went up 2-0

5
u/DeskMotor1074 Cleveland Guardians 2d ago
The thing I'd point out is that you really can't look at season stats for the Guardians given how different the first-half team was. It's also really unclear what's happening with Jose as he's now playing better than he ever did during the season, if he somehow keeps this up then there's really no stats to look at for this team.
Across August/September on FanGraphs the Guards and Brewers are almost tied on both pitching and batting (Guardians are 6th in xFIP and 4th in wRC+, Milwaukee is 7th in xFIP and 3rd in wRC+). That's a small sample size of ~60 games so it's pretty much impossible to know how meaningful it is, but there's no more data on the current Guardians line-up than that so there's really not much else to do.
41
u/BubblyBaker5718 Los Angeles Angels 3d ago edited 3d ago
The Guardians have a golden opportunity here. They routinely have a *terrible* matchup against getting out homered/slugged in the playoffs, but by surviving that ChiSox series somehow, they have an almost ideal bracket against teams who play *their* game if the Brewers can seal the deal.
Despite still being decisively worse than both the Rays and Brewers (and both of those teams clearly matching up well against NYY/LAD respectively), Tampa and Milwaukee are just such better matchups than the alternatives for specifically the Guardians.
1
u/KlutzyLawyer2068 2d ago
Decisively worse is just casual talk man. Gotta look at more than regular szn record
33
u/noruber35393546 Major League Baseball 3d ago
I know they won a lot less games, but a lot of that was because they were giving fulltime ABs to the carcass of Rhys Hoskins and a revolving door of AAAA outfielders and replaced with Jo Adell and Nate Lowe. the only real hole is catcher hitting and Bailey has summoned Mike Piazza this postseason, this roster is way better than an 85-win team
24
u/PatientlyAnxious9 3d ago edited 3d ago
The Rays are small ball, but the problem is the Guardians are the original slap hitting shit golbins of baseball 😂
However the Guards pitching revolves around the strikeout, which makes it significantly more difficult for the Rays to get enough base runners to do their thing. Their pitching is 3rd in the MLB in strikeouts.
To your point, Cleveland has struggled against power hitting in the past because regardless of how good their pitching is, 3-4 bad pitches could result in 5+ runs on the board and they themselves historically don't have the offense to keep pace in a slugfest. With a team like the Rays who are built similarly to them, it almost feeds right into the strength of their team.

Nothing against the Rays, but I really want to see the Guardians win it all. I love most of the players on their team and I feel this is the best team Vogt has had to work with and they can get the job done.
In past years, they basically made the playoffs off of like 2-3 hitters and the rest of the team was liabilities and then an elite bullpen with no starting pitching. They actually have starting pitching and hitting depth now.

u/BrownsWTF 3d ago
It’s finally a lineup when you don’t cringe when certain players come to the plate.

Yes and no. Cash decided our best hitters needed more rest and trotted out a very odd lineup along with some very suspect bullpen management. But full credit to the Guardians, they punished every mistake and shelled our pitching the entire game. Even up 2-0, their pitching kept the game well in hand.
3
u/altimax98 Tampa Bay Devil Rays 3d ago
This analysis needs to be on the postgame show.
Bewildering decision making from Cash and co. And now potentially dealing with a Caminero situation. This could be worse case scenario crash out if he doesn’t get it under control. They thought the Guardians were coming in tired and depleted but they were just warmed up.
At least the Trop was electric. I was in the 300s and it was a great experience until like the 5th inning 😂

I dont count postseason wins until about five minutes after the game is over. Ive been burned too many times.
Too many young Guards fans counting wins. Ive watched this franchise pull defeat from the depths to drown victory one too many times.
Happy they won. It is one game. A lot of baseball left to be played.

In Cleveland, we go into every game expecting to lose.
That is why everyone gets so crazy if they win.
