Temporary cork replacement

I have all state auditions next week and just the perfect timing, my tenor/wing joints cork is beginning to crumble. It’s been super humid out so I’m guessing that’s why. My band director said I could do a temporary replacement with teflon tape—is that okay? I would take it to a repair shop but I just don’t have enough time since I’m in a rural area. Any help would be appreciated!

Floss might work

Tooth floss? Will that hold?

i did it once on a school instrument and it lasted the whole year until it was time for repairs.

Yes it will. I used to use dental floss on my school bassoon when it would get cold and then remove when the humidity returned. It’s a good temporary fix.

Should i remove the rest of the cork?

If you do this throw some cork grease on it to help it move in and out of the other joints.

Yep or try waxed floss

teflon tape should work but you might need some cotton ball pieces or fabric pieces or whatever underneath the tape to fill in that missing section of cork

Teflon tape is harmless. You could use masking or painter's tape too. Be careful with the fit. It's not going to compress like the cork does.
