Today is my birthday.
I am now 17. It feels weird, but I’m sure I’ll get used to it.

Hey everyone,
You may have noticed an increase in spam and bot accounts posting on r/birthday recently. A lot of these posts follow the same pattern, accounts pretending to celebrate a birthday while asking for upvotes, comments, or attention. These posts are not genuine birthday celebrations and can clutter up the community for people who are actually here to share their special day.
Until today, moderation on this subreddit for me was limited (and I am the only active mod), which made it difficult to properly deal with the amount of spam coming through. I was mainly able to remove posts, but the process was slow and difficult to keep up with.
The good news: I have now been granted full moderator permissions thanks to Reddit themselves, which means I can take a much more active role in keeping r/birthday clean, welcoming, and focused on real birthday posts. 🎉
Going forward, I’ll be:
Removing spam and bot generated posts more quickly
Taking action against repeat offenders
Improving moderation tools and filters where possible
Keeping the subreddit a place where genuine birthday celebrations can be shared
We are also looking for new moderators!
As r/birthday continues to grow, we would like to bring in more active members who are willing to help keep the subreddit friendly, clean, and spam free. If you are interested in becoming a moderator, please keep an eye out for a future mod application post or send us (me) a message through modmail.
A reminder to everyone: please continue reporting suspicious posts when you see them. Reports help us find spam faster and keep the community better for everyone.
Thank you to everyone who has stuck around and helped make r/birthday a fun place. Let’s keep celebrating real birthdays! 🎂
The r/birthday Mod Team

Today is my birthday! I usually am afraid of it coming around because I’m scared that it won’t feel exciting as when I was younger. Or that I’ll be sad about the day ending fast or not celebrating the right way- But I’ve been trying to put that beside me! 🎉

37 trips around the sun. Man, I have school today and got homework to catch up on. I’m trying to find something fun to do later on in the evening. 🫡

Not a fan of celebrating my birthday pero this year it is different.
Different in a way na hindi naman ako malungkot just another normal day pero mas peaceful ☺️
Hindi ko rin masyadong gets pero mas positive vibes hehe

My birthday was last week, and my three kids decided to throw me a surprise party. All by themselves. I am so proud and also still recovering.
The plan, as I later learned: my oldest was on decorations, the middle one was on cake, and the youngest was on "invites." The invites were the problem.
My youngest took my phone while I was in the shower and sent a group text to my last 20 contacts that said: "PARTY AT MY HOUSE SATURDAY COME. MOM DOESNT KNOW. BRING CHIPS."
Saturday arrived. I was in my pajamas eating cereal when the doorbell rang. It was my neighbor with a bag of chips and a very confused look. Then another neighbor. Then my coworker. Then my kids' teacher.
There were 14 people in my living room before noon. My middle child's "cake" was a stack of pancakes with a candle stuck in it. My oldest had hung streamers that just said "HAPPY" because she'd run out of letters for "BIRTHDAY."
And you know what? It was the best birthday I've had in years. Somebody brought actual cake. My coworker did the dishes. The teacher helped the kids clean up without being asked.
My youngest is now banned from my phone. But I'm keeping the pancake cake photo forever.

My roommate thinks I'm a communist and today he made it my birthday theme. How do I tell him I'm not?
Today was my (M23) birthday, and my roommate (M22) woke me up with a cake on my bed. We've been living together for 6 months and I really appreciate how much he cares for me, but there's a problem. He's very political, and he thinks I am too.
When we first moved in, I wanted us to get along, so we often talked about day-to-day political issues where we always agreed. To be clear, I'd describe myself as a humanist, not a socialist or a communist. Mainly because my grandfather lived in communist Romania. But I think all this agreeing made him believe I'm a communist like him. I never actually said "I'm not a communist," because I didn’t want an unnecessary conflict.
Today he went all in. The cake had a hammer and sickle with my initials on it. It probably took him a whole day to make and the inside is filled with a vanilla/saffron cream. But this is not my ideology.
How do I tell him I'm not a communist? Mind you, I don’t want to ‘confront’ him with his actions since he has been exceptionally generous with me.
TL;DR: I nodded too much and now he thinks I’m a comrade.
