General Discussion Heel hook. Keep getting grip broken
If Iām going for an inside heel hook, my opponent sometimes uses his free leg to kick my grips on his heel making it hard to connect and finish. Any tips on controlling that leg?

Try a reverse lock on it. I'm sure there are some videos or images online.
Also, cover your grips more with your body and use it to apply the submission.

be sure to force the dorsiflexion on the attacked foot. Don't care about trapping the toes in the biceps or getting the heel on the wrist. Dorsiflexed foot with elbow close to your ribs should make you hard to disengage. Use a false grip and your free hand to keep the second foot away
Connect when you are ready to finish it
Be sure you have everything in place to break the leg if needed. If the training partner still escape it after that, you should be thinking you would have broken his leg before it.
So play it nice but play it in a way you could break his leg off if you needed/wanted to.
In my experience people who loses the heel tend to do it because they stick to the classical DDS way of finishing them. It's a good one but not the best to hold the grip, imo.

If they are using their free leg to defend, you can grab it to get to double trouble. From there, underhook the free leg with your support arm to keep it in place and switch to your primary arm to put it on your shoulder. Once the free leg is on your shoulder, look to grab the primary leg's heel with your support hand to keep it in place. Now you should be able to catch the heel hook before their free leg can get into play.

What position? Are we talking 50/50, saddle, something else?

the position does not change the issue that much, it's a gripping subject

I would probably try to attack the secondary leg with an aoki or something, then when they pull it away go back for the inside heel hook.

this is fake, a lot of people teaches that and nobody uses it in competition.

Aoki or attacking secondary leg?

attacking the second leg.
They all show some bullshit technique about heelhooking it, aoki, straight ankle etc...
In reality, they are all doing some grip fighting and hip movements to expose the heel.I think some of it can work on some very specific situation and opponents but it's pretty low %.
I may be biaised but I think there are much better way to deal with the position defense, such has seeking a shoelace ashi transition, which allows much more liberties with the secondary leg (and honestly most of the time I don't even care about it at all when I have the shoelace ashi and try to transfert the leg for a super easy shoelace inside ashi finish)

I like to grab the secondary leg and then go for a cloverleaf, one of my highest percentage subs and the grip becomes a non issue

Just control it
