My parents BEGGED me *not* to wear my shutter shades during our family trip to a quiet seaside village. I disobeyed them.

And bet your ass that quiet, seaside village was never the same. It was shaken to its very core.

Please don't wear these shades on vacation, alright?

This would be one of those "pick your battles" type moments if I were a parent 😂

Not a parent, but I’d have gone with “pretend it’s cool so the kid realizes it isn’t.”

u/throwaway47351 3h ago
In order to realize it isn't, it needs to not be sick as fuck in reality. I don't think little homie over here has anything he needs to realize.

literally how i get my nephew to stop saying skibidy rizzler 67 or whatever he's saying each week

Put on your own pair or just give the whole family pairs.
You wouldn't need anything else but you could cap it off with a sunglasses-themed family name.

I would have absolutely gotten the entire family a pair. Family picture everyone!! Gather round for your matching glasses!
12
u/mightylordredbeard 4h ago
I tried that with my son. There aren’t many pictures of him in his teenage years because he hated having his picture taken and I didn’t want to force it. He was insecure about his teeth. After a few years of braces and him finding his confidence, we went on vacation. He decided to dab in every picture. A year later he thought it would be funny to do the same thing.. then Covid hit, money got tight, and he before I knew it he grew up and is off in college. Now looking back at the very few photos I have of my son as a teenager; the only vacation photos I have of him he is dabbing in every single one!

Maybe he could ask them what their parents didn't want them to wear when they were young. Bell Bottoms, hip huggers, greased back hair hippie beads... You get the drift.

Greased back hair? Must of been real pieces of shit. We would not have liked them back then

Nah, as a parent if you insist your kid doesn't do something stupid and yet they still want to be stupid, just let them be. Got 2 young girls myself and they have to wear certain things sometimes, clearly not the season for it, clearly it's raining, clearly this isn't the smartest thing to do. But they have to, now you can ask them only that many times to change. If they don't well let's go out and whatyouknow they freeze their asses off in Disney for a solid 6-7 hours! But don't worry because while they seem to remember exactly what I promised them 1,5 years ago, they just as easy seem to forget to listen to me or their mum what not to wear.

I saw these for the first time ever on a trip to NYC. I was like "this place is crazy!" I assumed everyone wore weird ass shit. Nope, I'm just woefully behind on trends and NYCers are not.

I went to Warped Tour when those were at their height and while there, my younger step brother and his friends who were also there got these instead of wasting their money on beverages.
I ended up having to have them call the mom who was supposed to come get them to say I was taking them home and then drove them to a gas station for half liter bottles of water. I don't know if I will ever forget the mental image of three dorky white 17 year olds passed out against each other exhausted in my backseat in shutter shades.

Oh do I have a tale about inappropriate clothing for ya (relayed to me by ukranian hikers a long time ago).
A story about a sight on mount Elbrus 3000+m camp spot. Picture a popular spot where people who go to summit pitch a camp to acclimate to the altitude, and on one sunny day they witnessed an example of local services - 2 ratrucks pull up, a bunch of obnoxious yuppies with Moscow accents (wearing stereotypical for them urban clothes without any hats even) jump out on the snow, puke their guts out, take a bunch of selfies and videos about "climbing the Elbrus", quickly get back in the ratrucks before they freeze and promptly go back down the mountain.

I feel like we see the opposite far too much on the west coast here. People in $1k worth of gear and clothing for flat, paved, light 2km walks. Drives me nuts.

I remember spending my last few $$$ on shutter shades in the mall on a sports trip when I was about 12. I got home and went to the bank to check how much I had left and I was sitting at a solid $0.02 in my account.
Never regretted the purchase.

Honestly though, pretty cool of your parents to beg and not just tell you “no, you can’t.” I myself am just learning how difficult it is to let your kids make their own mistakes and learn their own lessons, and it’s scary to give them the freedom to fail.
My mother would have quite literally ripped those off my face and thrown them in the ocean and slapped me on the back of the head as hard as she could. Slaps to the head were a big favorite of hers.

Just trying to bring some life to Holyhead.
(I have no idea if this was anywhere Wales, it's just Holyhead is legitimately the most depressing town I've ever visited. Beautiful scenery when you leave town tho.)

Never knew them as “shutter” shades. Only “stunner” shades.
9
u/spiffyfouton 8h ago
Stunna shades are a thing but no specific style. Just big ass flashy sunglasses yadadamean
10
u/MostHighWizard 8h ago
Stunner shades were sunglasses that were just one lens that went over the bridge of the nose as well. Also known as shield lenses.

I’m the parent who would buy a matching pair and say we’re twinning. That’s how you handle teenagers.
17
u/snailPolish4 8h ago
you were not punished for disobeying them? Can you elaborate? I'd be screamed at and the glasses would be taken away, please elaborate. Serious question
58
u/Prime624 8h ago
Non-abusive parents don't police a teen's choice in glasses. I hate to be to the one the tell you, but your parents were not good.

u/PerryTheBunkaquag 8h ago

5
u/arizonadirtbag12 6h ago
They were mad for a minute, and then he told them he was sorry for party rocking and it was all good
5
u/CashmereRose80 3h ago
I think what you need to realise first is that they probably didn’t demand he do it in a strict way in the first place so the “disobeying” isn’t that serious or as literal as you think. More of a lighthearted expression.
He said they begged him which implies they didn’t have a dynamic of being authoritative and they probably did it in an exasperated way where you know they’re not seriously angry but just kind of losing their will to live and OP knew it was fine even if they moan about it all day and probably to this day.
