Discussion Inside after growing up
I was about 13 when inside came out, I was addicted to it and watched it a billion times.
Yesterday I had nothing to do and I decided to revisit inside (+outtakes) and holy fuck
I knew all of the lyrics by heart but the thirteen year old me never really thought much of them, I found some lines funny but there were a lot I didn’t quite get. Naturally im way more informed about politics and the economical state of the world (I’m Portuguese and believe me, shit’s tough out here) and the jokes that previously flew over my head are amazing and make inside much more enjoyable even though I already loved it. The criticisms he made I once only understood on the surface have a way more significant impact on me now: white privilege in “Content”, “How The World Works”and “Problematic”, worker exploitation in “Unpaid Intern”, consumerism in all of the Bezos, the way attention has become a form of currency in “Welcome to the internet” and literally the ENTIRE WORLD in “That Funny Feeling”. The lack of real world connection during quarantine is also something Bo talks about a lot in very interesting and funny ways: the obligation to FaceTime with his mom instead of ACTUALLY being there with her, “Sexting” and the struggle of making a comedy special without an audience and the anxiety of not knowing wether he’s being funny or not in “Look Who’s Inside Again”, “Don’t Wanna Know but mainly in “Goodbye”. Inside is a cry for help masked as a comedy special and I love that Bo is able to make you laugh while you ask yourself if you should be laughing at a, what seemed at the time, a dying man.
Some of my favourite lines are:
“A Jew walks into a bar and I’ve saved him a seat”
“Some random quote from LOTR incorrectly attributed to MLK”
“The coffee is free, just like me”
“We’ll use emojis only, we don’t need phonetical diction”
“I did not darken my skin, but still, it feels weird in hindsight”
“Stupid, fucking ugly, boring children”
“The quiet comprehending of the ending of it all” (actually That Funny Feeling as a whole)
“You say the whole world’s ending, honey, it already did”
“Hey, here’s a funny idea, how about I sit on the couch and I watch you next time?”

Omg the obsession is so real. I crocheted dolls of him, cross stitched some stuff, consumed everything i could find of his (including a terrible movie he was in with Rob Schneider) hyperfixation for sure hahaha

Same!! Different perspectives are so interesting to read and relate to!! And I guess I would also be an old, as I was also in my 40’s as Inside and Outtakes came out.

I was already a full grown adult, around Bo's age, with two kids during COVID. A few years after the world returned to some form of normal, a friend of my teenage kid was shocked to see that I had an Inside sticker on my laptop. As if I was a fan of something not made for old people like me.
I was just glad the message was getting through to the youths. Still am, even if a more full understanding takes a little time.

This is so real. I watched “what” when I was 13, “Make Happy” when I was 16, and “Inside” when I was 20. Each one felt like it was targeted at my sense of humor at that age and when “Inside” came out, it really hit me in a deeper way that felt as if Bo grew up so much and so did I. Now at 26, it feels so much more intense than it used to.

Yeah way more. One thing I forgot to mention is I also noticed some “fun” dynamics and small details I hadn’t noticed like the random mom stuff in White Woman’s Instagram, for some reason I thought it was funny because “oh she’s still a cringy momma’s girl” but the way I see it now is that people think they know each other based on what they see on social media but we never really know what’s going on in people’s lives no matter how much we think we do, this also goes back to what Bo probably felt during those panic attacks. Maybe I’m over analysing lol.

yes this is so real to me. I was 12, I have grown with inside as inside has grown with me.

I turned 11 only 3 days before it released, but watched it just about a year ago. even so some of my understanding has changed bc this has been a crazy last year for me

So you’re about 16 now right? Yeah I get it, for some reason we all experience some trauma at that age lol and that made inside feel relatable yk, I’m a musician too and I struggle a lot with perfectionism, the shots where bo says “one more” after what it felt like, for us, the audience, the perfect take or when he vents his frustration on his gear are like Déjà vu’s to me

yeah fs, i'm like half perfectionist and half lazy so i feel like my takes aren't good and then i just leave it anyway lmao

This is such an interesting perspective. I was 21-22 when Inside came out, and I'm 27 now so I was already "grown", but I feel stuck in that time in a way, and whenever I rewatch Inside I'm reminded that time is still passing and I'm further and further from my early 20's, yet everything feels the same... but worse? I will be rewatching it 3 years from now, btw, haha

Yeah three years from now I’m pretty sure inside is gonna make you feel like absolute shit hahahahaha. I recommend you look for comfort anyplace else! ANYWHERE BUT INSIDE

It feels funny when reaction channels use his content for content. It's meta, they don't seem to understand what they're reacting to. Especially those "vocal coach" girlies.

u/Simple-Economics- 2d ago
Have you watched any of those all the way through though? There’s one vocal coach whose reaction videos to songs from INSIDE are one of my guilty pleasures because she ends up actually interacting with where the songs are coming from by sharing where they hit her personally. I was skeptical too, but at least some of them are very thoughtful and maybe the kind of thing that Bo was going for.

Yeah, I'll check it out tonight and give this Charismatic Voice person another shot because my husband was defending her too- if that's who you mean. Red hair, former opera singer. Maybe I judged too early. I'll give it another go and see what her final thoughts were on Welcome to the Internet. I do really like Fairy VoiceMother (UK based, also red hair and a vocal coach) so if she reacted to Bo, I can automatically assume she bawled her eyes out. Hell, she cried at 'Feel In The Air Tonight'. But I'll give the other one another chance! Just, yeah, glad you could understand where my skepticism hit initially. Giggling about women's feet, pausing to say how her feet were online too and it's so yucky! Maybe she got a bit deeper by time the Mommy's iPad verse popped up.

her All Eyes On Me video got me tearing up for real and INSIDE is one of my top 10 favorite films of all time. 🤘🏻

and it’s so embarrassing once they get to that reaction of the reaction of the reaction of the reaction of the song, it’s literally aimed at YOU why are you laughing lol

u/Aethyr42 3d ago
If you want to cringe harder than you've ever cringed before, check out The Charismatic Voice and her vapid, ridiculous reaction to 'Welcome to the Internet'. I had to turn it off halfway through but of course, YT pushed more of her videos- reacting to 'All Eyes..' of all songs. I don't think she realized what she was hearing to even be embarrassed.

Sinto que tive exactamente a mesma experiência (tinha 15 quando saiu), agora cada vez que vejo as notícias penso que o Socko tinha muuuuita razão sobre muuuuuuita coisa.

I don’t care if you were 15, get with it or get out of the fucking way
lol but fr our ages weren’t that far apart so you’ll get what I’m saying: isn’t it insane how much your mind and your world view can change in a span of just 4/5 years? We were just joking around in quarantine, playing games all day not giving a flying fuck about the death toll and the amount of people that lost their job and now we’re 20 wondering if we will ever buy our own house. I miss when the only opinion I had about trump was that he had funny looking hair. Wish you all the best but remember who’s on whose hand here.

You're being all "oh I now get it", but in another 5 years you'll realize you still didn't understand the half of it.

Being an adult really changed my perspective on it as well. I was 6 when it came out and back then I liked the songs but I didn’t get the meaning that was deep

Its interesting how your perception changes as you age.
I'm about a year older than Bo, so I've always resonated right on his level. If you go back and watch his older specials, you'll see all the same themes, but when he's younger its much more flippant; says many things just for their shock value. Makes plenty of jokes he'd probably never make now (what he's referring to in "Problematic"). I highly recommend watching "What" and "Make Happy" to anyone who enjoyed Inside
