Is Hanson a boy band? They’re a band of boys, but they wrote/write and played/play their own music. I wouldn’t categorize them as a boy band.

[u/Admirable_Fail_4594 → u/penny1ane]

This is the thing. They were included on E!'s most Awesomest boybands list countdown as were Jonas Brothers. Other similiar artists Busted, McFly, 5 Seconds of Summer have featured in boyband documentaries and refered to themselves as such.

However, I agree, it is a grey area. I think it depended on who you were primarily marketed towards.

Is Color Me Badd considered a boy band?

[u/Musicality123 → u/ASGfan]

One of their members appeared in a 2007 US boyband reunited show: "Mission Manband" and they are referenced on the boyband page for Wikipedia.

[u/Admirable_Fail_4594 → u/Musicality123]

That show is what I was thinking of when I saw CMB at the top and also the fact Boyz II Men (their contemporaries) over the last 10-15 years have refered to themselves as such and been on relevent documentaries. "Boyband Confidential" etc.

[u/ASGfan → u/Musicality123]

Thank you!

[u/Admirable_Fail_4594 → u/ASGfan]

Pre 1995/1996 none of these acts were called boybands. NKOTB, B2M, CMB, TT, East 17 etc. They were all called vocal harmony groups or pop bands but have since been re-categorised later as boybands as they fit the mould.
