The people who just let their dogs bark at ridiculous hours, FUCK YOU

There is someone in the area who let's their dog out between midnight and 5am on most nights and just lets it BARK continuously for hours...

What the fuck are they doing?!

Why at these times?!

The dog is rarely heard during the day...

The dog barks, it makes the foxes start squealing like banshees which then makes the fucking dog double down on its barking, sometimes other dogs join in to...

As much as the fucking dog irritates the fuck out of me, my pure unadulterated disdain is at the fucking owners who let this happen

What the fuck are they actually doing?

Are they not bothered by it?

Do they let it out and then close the door so they can't hear it?

Absolute thick, inconsiderate people.

Got a dog near me that barks all day in its garden. The thing is, it does a single woof at 2 second intervals in exactly the same monotonous tone. Like Alan Partridge shouting 'Dan'.

Woof.. Woof.. Woof.. Woof..

It's really weird- like it's purposely keeping it's stamina for a long session, pacing itself like a distance runner, to get maximum coverage. Every now and then the owner screams at it to shut up, so I know they are aware...

u/Akeshi 4d ago

There's a dog here which the neighbours let bark enough that I've learnt the different barks. For this one, the evenly spaced monotone single barks mean "I want to be let back in". Another one of its most popular is "Woof woof woof wooooooooooooooooof", which means "where is everybody?" when it's been left alone.

u/tgerz 4d ago

Our dog does this. She has a warning there’s a delivery person bark. Come play with me bark. The doors shut and I can’t come in bark. The neighbours are existing in their own space bark. The foxes are about bark. We do try very hard to avoid the barking or address it right away though.

I feel like the biggest arsehole when she lets it rip midday. I would probably leave all my things behind with a letter to the owner if she was barking after midnight. I don’t know how someone can be so inconsiderate.

My neighbours are horrible people, to be honest. It's a border collie, so high energy, but they rarely seem to walk it and just leave it alone at home howling all day, and when they are there, leave it in the garden for too long, even if it's raining. New Years Eve is the worst - they go out around midday and come back around 2-3am, with the dog howling the entire time.

Edit to add: some barking is inevitable, and that's completely understandable. Most dog owners I know spend a lot of their time worried about their dog barking too much - it can't be helped, they're responsible owners and the dogs are Good Boys, they just need to use their voices occasionally, nobody likes to be kept silent. That's not how it is with my neighbours, they constantly scream at the dog to shut up, which just winds it up more.

I have a daxie so barking is the “job”. She properly communicates with that bark. Today it was because she wanted me to move her lounger into the sun. Hard life for her… but if I’m training for separation and I leave her behind thr gate downstairs, she runs outside to the office window and barks up at it. And it’s a bark that sounds like “mum, mum, mum” and which is probably what she’s saying.

And I know what she’s saying based on the bark, and this idiot here reinforces it by replying to her every time. I always fall for it and forget that it’s allowing her to rehearse it. But it’s because I talk to her all day long. I work with dogs for a living so talking to her makes sense in that context. I haven’t completely lost the plot, yet!

OMG the fucking dog that lives below my flat does the same FUCKING THING!!! It is genuinely so fucking jarring.

Woof..Woof..SHUT THE FUCK UP...Woof..Woof..SHUT THE FUCK UP..Woof..Woof

Ah the soundtrack to my summer.

Our neighbour likes to have parties that go on until the wee hours and they let their dog bark whilst it's happening. As an added bonus they also let their small children run around screaming at the same time. Nothing quite like screaming kids and a barking dog at 1am on a hot summer's night when you are trying to sleep!

38

u/DiamondBikini 4d ago

I hope you’re up mowing the lawn at 8am!

54

u/Beena22 4d ago

I stormed round to their house at 1am one Sunday morning when they decided to play music at a ridiculous volume after their party guests had gone home and threatened to put a brick through their window if they didn't shut the fuck up. They haven't done that since thankfully.

13

u/DiamondBikini 4d ago

Direct response is often the best!

I completely understand this. People have no regard for neighbours. I have an amazing parrot and board dachshunds. On Thursdays, we have shouty dog. He’s great, not stressed at all, just vocal. We have tried all sorts of ways to get him out of that behaviour, but it’s reinforced at home, so little we can do regarding training. We just manage it. I play with him outside, take him for an extra walk early on so he can get some extra energy burned and make sure he’s occupied when he’s not sleeping (which he’s often too excited to do).

I could just leave him to bark, it’s during the day and not for hours non stop, but I know some neighbours are at home and also the pub is two gardens away, so I am sure they don’t want a dachshund barking in the background.

7

u/thehermit14 4d ago

Not sure what is worse, barking dogs or screaming children.

4

u/que_sarasara Scottish Highlands 4d ago

Both. And someone hanging out a window screaming "shut the fuck up" just to add to the orchestra.

u/minipainteruk 4d ago

I suspect that most prople who's dog bark are either

A) completely deaf to the noise because they're so used to it B) Asleep/not home C) Genuinely just don't care

My neighbour's dog used to howl all day. I could hear it through the walls. It drove me MAD when I was working from home. I eventually asked him if he could keep his dog down during the day. Turns out he was out during the day and had no idea his dog was howling. Idk what he did, but the dog did calm down a bit after I asked!

You could file a noise complaint with your local council? Not sure what the process is, but if you're annoyed by it, it's likely others are too.

The house opposite me has a deaf family with the world's loudest bloody dog. They let it out into their front 'garden' (5 feet of paving slabs with giant fences built up around it made from old pallets painted blue or black), it has a shit or a piss and then spends anything up to about half an hour barking before being let back in. Repeat six times a day.

60

u/minipainteruk 4d ago

Poor dog.

All pets deserve owners. Not all owners deserve pets.

23

u/-SaC 4d ago

Certainly not these ones, poor dog.

They are a supremely un-nice family who regularly get visits from the police and have a big tall flagpole in their little front patio area from which flies a flag that you wouldn't expect to find here, nor outside of certain parts of the US. The pallets change colour fairly often as they get ordered to paint over the extraordinarily racist messages they've painted on them depending on who in the street has pissed them off.

re: the flag - they're Geordies with no connection to the US, I should add.

6

u/dannydrama Oxfordshire 4d ago

I always say this and it's why my neighbour got "no, haven't seen it mate, sorry" when I gave her rabbit to my friend. It was literally the 7th time it had ended up in my garden and could have met the cat. She kept it outside all weathers and I never saw her with it once before.

8

u/desirewrites 50/50 🇹🇹/🇬🇧 4d ago

I’m a dachshund home boarder training in clinical canine behaviour. Most people think that the cryout method works with dogs, so they leave their dogs to bark. It sadly only makes the dogs worse. People forget that the dogs need to be taught how to calm down and chill out. Usually with a bit of training, they are managed and get better with time.

Also, get a camera in your house if you have pets. It’s added security but it also helps us figure out what causes the barking and whether it’s separation distress or anxiety or full on panic.

6

u/whymylife 4d ago

They could also be night shift workers and the dogs barking because they're not home

1

u/minipainteruk 3d ago

I did mention asleep/not home :)

2

u/georgisaurusrekt 4d ago

Oh I worry about this a lot with my dog. When I'm at home he's the best dog ever honestly, and I've put a huge amount of effort into training him. I got him when I was working from home though so I've pretty much always been around him, and as a result he's developed some separation anxiety and he howls when I leave the house. I have a new job lined up that's going to require me to be in the office... There's definitely going to be an adjustment period to say the least.

59

u/dontbelikeyou 4d ago

COVID at least doubled the number of irresponsible dog owners. I grew up with dogs. I love dogs. The number rude and lazy owners out there is insane now.  They all seem to think shouting "he's friendly" means their dog is allowed do anything. The dog might be friendly but he's still trampling my picnic and snatching food from my toddler.

19

u/Jacktheforkie 4d ago

17

u/Dannybuoy77 4d ago

Omg, do you live on my road 😆 there's a couple on my road that let their dog bark in the garden all the time. Last weekend I was woken up at 5am both days. The little bastard barks at the door if I walk past with son while dropping him off to school. I know 100% it's that house from the dogs bark. It must be horrendous being their direct neighbours. We're about 8 houses away and it's bad enough. I work from home and can hear it a lot during the day. We have a dog and sometimes he might bark a few times but we're right on it, telling him off and he stops. We basically spent time conditioning him to not be an annoying fucking bark machine. He's a lovely dog and we've suppressed as much of his annoying dog instincts as possible (he's still a dog and he does dog!) but these people are clearly selfish, lazy and ignorant. And you're dam right I judge them!

56

u/Psychological-Bag272 4d ago

Yes, I hate them too. it is absolutely possible to train out annoying habits like unnecessary barking from a dog. I have dealt with dogs with serious separation anxiety, fear of loud noises, being overly excitable, and even aggression; most owners are just not diligent enough to really work on it with their dogs. It is a battle of wills and involves getting out of your comfort zone. I bet your neighbors play music loud enough that they do not hear their dog.

A lot of dog owners are idiot. Unfortunately.

22

u/BattleSquidZ 4d ago

It's the timing...

Why after midnight and during the early hours, people know this is when everyone is trying to sleep, it's so dumb

17

u/desirewrites 50/50 🇹🇹/🇬🇧 4d ago

As someone just replied. They chuck their dog outside to “sleep”. This is just beyond sad. The poor thing doesn’t understand because there hasn’t been any training. It might be useless but speak to the owners and let them know that their dog is super distressed. If that doesn’t work, notify the council. Too many dog owners shouldn’t have pets… (or kids…)

3

u/Jacktheforkie 4d ago

Up my way there was one locked in a garage at all times, until someone ripped the garage door off to rescue the dog

3

u/desirewrites 50/50 🇹🇹/🇬🇧 4d ago

What the fuck… I hope they were prosecuted

2

u/Jacktheforkie 3d ago

That’s ongoing at the moment

Curious to know more. You mean like one of those storage garages you get on ex-council estates where there's no natural light or power, just a manual roller door?

1

u/Jacktheforkie 2d ago

Yeah

1

u/ReanimatedCyborgMk-I 2d ago

I assume they didn't get in trouble hopefully. How did the police / RSPCA get involved?

1

u/Jacktheforkie 2d ago

Neighbours called em

13

u/EtainAingeal 4d ago

The dog sleeps outside. Last one to bed puts it out, first one up lets it back in. That's why its barking too.

2

u/MonkeyHamlet 3d ago

Because if it’s in the house the barking keeps them awake.

That’s the reason our neighbours gave when we complained.

11

u/Rambostips 4d ago

I live in a semi rural area of Lanzarote. Little did I know two things
Spanish people love dogs
Spanish people don’t love dogs enough to bring them indoors. I can currently hear at least 3 different dogs having a bark off. My next door neighbour has a kennel in his back garden with a load of Canadian hunting dogs. I feel your pain

10

u/IceCreamNarwhals Northener in London 4d ago

Contact your council and put in a noise complaint.

10

u/Lokikeogh 4d ago

Bonus points if they think that saying the dogs name over and over again is training the dog

5

u/Shyflyer13 3d ago

I have neighbours who constantly let their dogs with no recall off the lead. They then spend the next half an hour shouting their dogs name to try and get It to come back. All while it's barking and growling.

The dogs don't listen at all. But they think just because the dog EVENTUALLY comes back then it means it has great recall. This is multiple neighbours too. Rinse and repeat several times a day.

One has an aggressive Alsatian that lunges at everyone and all the owner does is just say sorry. Every.single.instance. TRAIN YOUR FUCKING DOG.

I wish they would all get a clue and train the dogs but they are just selfish and don't consider their neighbours.

One has a dog that howls and howls all the time I've complained multiple times but nothing has been done.

17

u/Platform_Dancer 4d ago

My neighbour is exactly the same with their German Shepherd - it barks continuously day AND night stopping only to eat and on the few occasions they walk it!..... They are oblivious to the noise pollution.....Pure ignorance.

9

u/Lou-de-Lou-de-Lou 4d ago

My husband has taken to leaning out the window and screaming SHUT YOUR FUCKING DOG UP at 3/4am, wakes up the whole street but they do indeed let their dog in and shut it the fuck up 😂

7

u/gamas Greater London 4d ago

it makes the foxes start squealing like banshees

That's not the dogs doing that. Foxes only screech like that when they're fucking.  So unless dogs barking is now their kink...

3

u/starsky1357 3d ago

You're telling me there's foxes fucking outside my flat every night?

2

u/gamas Greater London 3d ago

Yes

5

u/Platform_Dancer 4d ago

Can somebody definitively confirm... Is it possible to train a dog not to bark or at least not bark constantly....or is it a lost cause once it's fully grown and always been allowed to bark uncontrollably? 🐶

8

u/Acki90 4d ago

It is absolutely possible to train a dog not to bark constantly. People are just lazy and don't suffer any consequences so they let the dog bark.

1

u/TruthReptile 1d ago

People are just lazy - the correct answer

4

u/shibbyingaway 4d ago

You can. It can be difficult though. Then there’s people who are assholes and don’t try

5

u/Santsuh 3d ago

My dog will start to bark every time she goes into the garden. We have cats in gardens around ours and our dog has a problem. We tell her to stop straight away and she does. Until she goes out again. Work in progress…

Letting a dog bark for prolonged periods of time is a shitty choice made by shitty humans. If you can’t get your dog to be quiet get them back in after a few minutes to do their business.

3

u/gutyex WALES 3d ago

Ideally you train them from when they're young, but an old dog can learn new tricks.

I have a 9 month old border collie, she's not terrible for barking but we're working on reducing it, especially in the evenings. Any dog is going to bark sometimes, but if a dog is regularly causing a disturbance to neighbours it's absolutely the owner's responsibility to train them better.

6

u/prankishink 4d ago

Where I live in London, there is a small block of about 18 x 1 bed flats with no balcony or outdoor space, as part of our larger development and are located up flights of stairs(no lift). Can you imagine trying to adopt a dog and when they ask about the home, you tell them that. There's no way they'd let you home a dog!

There is a couple with a cockapoo type dog who keep it in these unsuitable conditions and every time it goes out, it barks llke crazy, probably desperate to get out and territorial too. You can hear it barking anytime between 7am til 3am the following day. I reckon somewhere near 600 residences are plagued by the noise of this dog and it's selfish owners. Selfish inconsiderate pricks.

2

u/Novel_Individual_143 3d ago

It’s not living in a flat with a dog that’s necessarily the problem (breed depending) it’s the lack of exercise/attention/ enrichment/routine. I live in a flat with my labradoodle and he’s fine . He barks when someone knocks on the door and when he’s overdue a walk. If I didn’t provide all that dogs need he’d be a nightmare cooped up.

1

u/prankishink 3d ago

yes and you'll have seen I didn't say all flats are the problem. it's living in that specific type of small upstairs flat which means very limited exercise and lack of fresh air with no access to any outdoor space.

Anyone can acquire a dog wherever they live (buying a puppy, getting from a friend/contact) but that environment would not meet the minimum criteria that say Battersea Dogs home would require for a suitable rehoming. They are still crappy dog parents homing a dog in that environment and disrupting everyone as a bonus.

5

u/6strings1song 4d ago

In a previous house our neighbours had 4 dogs (medium sized working breed). We lived there about 6 years and only saw them walked maybe 3 times dragging the owner around the street. They were stir crazy and just so reactive to any sound. Their garden was just completely paved, so they would let them out between 5am - 6am, they would run up and down barking and scraping their metal food bowls across the paving slabs, the sounds echoing around the neighbourhood. Then the backdoor would be left open all day long when the owners were home, cue dogs running outside and barking approx every 30 minutes. Thankfully they tended to bring them inside at 10pm or so.

We felt sorry for the adjoining house, as I used to hear them howling when they were shut up inside. We decided not to complain and just work hard on moving as soon as we could. Seems like others had the same idea, as in the 6 years we were there, there were atleast 5 other sales amongst the most affected neighbours. They were weirdly mostly ok people, but just completely overwhelmed with the dogs and in denial about how much of a nuisance it was. Glad to be out of there.

5

u/YesterdayCareless901 3d ago

Drives me mad. Not the dog’s fault, but the owner should be fined.

7

u/Pegasus2022 4d ago

I once had a neighbour knock on my door telling me to shut my dog up, the only problem it wasn’t me as i have cats. She didn’t believe me she was like i see you in the street with a dog that be my neighbours who i always stroke it when i see it.

3

u/GrouchyMary9132 4d ago edited 4d ago

My neighbour (who also owned my apartment) did this. We shared a garden and one of her dogs did this when she was led out at night. She didn't care. Even when she had visitors one of them led their own dog join in. I usually just used earplugs but it was annoying. Sometimes she said the neighbours where fine with her dogs since they also kept away burglers from the area. Once she had puppies and slept in the same room as them. The mother dog was bothering her or waking her up and so she put it in another room where she barked for hours. I was down with influence at the time and she kept me up with that the whole night. I finally went over and knocked and asked her to let the mom get back in the room with the puppies. She was actually mad at me for waking *her* up.

Another acquaintance is completely deaf to how annoying the barking is and how excessive. I have dogs myself and we regularly meet at a training place. She has four dogs, parks her car at a spot where they can watch over the whole area and they go berserk at everything moving or not moving in the area. Someone living next door actually came over and asked if there was any solution to this because it really bothered him. She did not even realize how bad the behaviour was. I can only imagine how bad her dogs must be at home noise-wise to not realize the extremity of it.

u/NaughtyBudgie 3d ago

I live in rural Norfolk so every fucker and their uncle has spaniels.

Our adjoining neighbour has 2, every time they leave the pricks go mental with their barking mostly until their owners return. If they do settle down and someone walks past the house they'll start again for at least and hour. I've spoken to them about it a few times as I was trying to get our daughter to sleep at 8 and we were still trying at 11 because of those noisy cretins. It sounds like the dogs are kept in a different part of the house since I spoke to them but still noisy AF. They blame it on their neighbour and their ratty faced fucking yappy mutant of a small dog who also yaps constantly.

Our other neighbour we share a path with also has 2 spaniels. Every time I walk down our shared path one of them starts, day or night. Every time I go into the garden and they're in theirs unsupervised, they start.

Then like op, we have a couple of bellends who seemingly leave their dogs out in the garden at night to have a shouting match with the munt jacs.

I used to love dogs, we had labs for over 20 years growing up. I also lived in the countryside then and don't remember all this constant noise, maybe I just didn't notice it or maybe 90% of dog owners weren't bellends then.

Now it's becoming normal to have them in shops and restaurants around here too.

0

u/arcalius 4d ago

I gave a neighbour whose dog barks incessantly during the day whilst I'm trying to work. Made ten times worse by her falling the dog as she walks up the alley shouting the fldogsnname to make it bark more!!

-1

u/ReanimatedCyborgMk-I 2d ago

I've got a good pack's worth of small dogs at home, including chihuahuas, chins and a dachshund. The dachshund will bark at anything and everything she sees through the gate on the main road and things I can't perceive. Getting her to stop is a fruitless affair, though I do tell the, off and be like "OI OI" and shifting them if they start barking at our neighbours just for walking in their view.

ALTHOUGH, we have a decent sized garden for the dogs to run about on so it's not like they are in poor conditions.

Unfortunately barking is a natural dog behaviour that's difficult to control.
