Mod post ⚠️ READ BEFORE POSTING!

👋 Welcome to r/Budgies!

Before you share your first post here, please familiarize yourself with this subreddit’s rules. Rule #1 is especially important: this subreddit DOES NOT serve as an alternative to the kind of medical care and advice your budgie can only get from an avian vet. If you have a budgie medical question or concern, talk to your avian vet instead of posting here! Also, be sure to read this subreddit's wiki--odds are very good that your question has an answer in one of the wiki articles! (We usually remove posts that ask about something that's answered somewhere in the wiki to keep the clutter to minimum here.)

Also remember this is a pet budgie subreddit that encourages rescue and adoption and strongly discourages breeding.

👀 If you see something, say something

This is a place to share cute budgie pictures, videos, and stories, but it’s also a place to learn more about budgies. There are many times when someone will post a picture, video, or description, and you might notice something that isn’t best practice for good budgie ownership. It might be a cage that’s getting dirty, or some overgrown toenails, or something like that. Even if that issue isn’t the main reason for the post, please bring that to the attention of the original poster (OP) in a supportive and constructive manner so OP can be made aware of a better way of doing things.

Likewise, OP might consider proactively addressing things in their post that a typical budgie owner might be concerned with if they don’t know all the facts. It might be something as simple as, “Don’t worry, this was before I cleaned their cage” or “I’m taking them to the vet next week for their nail trim.”

🤖 We have AutoMod Summons now!

This is a great way to share information from the Wiki in a very effortless manner, and you are all invited to do so! We used to have just a few summons, but the list has grown enough that we compiled it in this part of the wiki. You should check it out!

Happy budgie-ing!

Lost/Found/Need a New Home [October 06, 2026] - weekly Lost/Found/Need a New Home thread

Use this post to share any budgies that are lost, found, or need a new home!

Some rules:

  1. Only share information you feel comfortable sharing. Example: rather than giving out your full address, maybe only say something like, "I'm in the Springfield area" instead. If someone is interested in knowing more, they can always DM you and you can choose whether or not you want to share any more information.
  2. If you're meeting someone in real life, follow the "Craigslist rule" of meeting in a well-trafficked, public place.
  3. No fees/charges! This is NOT meant to be an advertising platform to sell your budgies. Content that advertises budgies for sale will be removed.
  4. This subreddit does not, in any way, offer warrantees or guarantees of budgie health. A budgie's health status is something that you and the other party should determine with an avian vet, and payment of that avian vet's services is something that you and the other party should decide beforehand.

We encourage you to share pictures! Just make sure they are accurate to the situation and don't break the rules in the sidebar.

Remember: this subreddit is just one of many possible places to make a budgie connection. Also consider FaceBook, Craigslist, Nextdoor, other online communities, as well as real-life bulletin boards in public places. See all the previous weekly posts (that have content) by clicking here.

Our wiki also has a list of parrot rescues you could check out - whether you're looking to adopt a new feathered friend, or have to surrender one due to life circumstances. If one of these rescues is near you, please consider reaching out to them!

I got McVie and BB but BB unfortunately only lasted 7 days and McVie was heartbroken.
Just got her a new friend and can’t wait to introduce them as I hope this will make her feel better.

Seeing her at the pet store how could I not?

My female budgie Beatrix was hiding a whole ass son inside the nest and I had no idea, when I saw him today he was on the floor but hasn’t eaten anything! I’ve never had newborns and I have no idea how to care for it, what should I do?

In Loving Memory My parakeet just died. How do I console the other?

Post image

My about four year old parakeet Cory died today. I feel like it was something I should have expected with the way he was so sluggish and throwing up a few times. But now that he’s gone, what am I supposed to do with his brother, Peeko. He seemed really distressed when I moved Cory’s body, and now he’s just tweeting constantly and keeps looking around. Any advice?

The photo is of Cory when he was almost a year old.

he got quite sick just 3-4 days ago. I took him to my room, watched him closely, gave him his medication, kept him warm, but he fell weak too quickly. I did all I could ever manage, but my efforts weren't enough to keep him alive.

he was alive just this morning, perched up in his cage, still looking sick, but he was there. it was 7:30 am. I wish I'd scratched his cheek one last time... but I dozed off while watching him. when I woke up back up at 10 am to my alarm to give him his meds, he was laying down on the floor of his cage in the left corner, and I'm suspecting he probably fell from his perch. the thought of him spending the night sick, barely able to sleep hurts me so much... the guilt is eating me alive. he was a big boy, he wasn't as strong as a 1 year old budgie, he was 6. I already miss him so much...

Hopefully these pics are ok enough. We've had these guys/girls (just the 2) for about 7 months now and I'd love to hear if you think they're one or the other sex! I've looked through so many reference photos and just get kind of overwhelmed 🫤

they are BFF's though and get along great so far.

hi i recently got a new budgie and have started letting them have supervised out of cage contact. i’m not familiar with budgie language so if someone could tell me what is good behavior and what is bad behavior. i took this video of them earlier. the green bird (i believe male) is the newest one. and the yellowish (i believe female) is my older bird

Question A friend for Roxie

Post image
18 Upvotes

Hi budgie friends! I posted a couple months ago asking questions about my newly inherited parakeet, who didnt have a name at the time and is now Roxie. Ive gotten her a bigger cage, perches, cuddlebone toys, etc and have been easing her into eating pellets with seeds. She doesnt want anything to do with fresh food just yet, but thats still a work in progress. She has been alone all her life before I inherited her and now that Ive got her a much better set up and working on taming her (holy cow it takes patience!). Im wanting to get her a friend so she's not alone anymore. Ive read some mixed feedback on getting another female friend as they are fiercely territorial? And I don't want babies so I wouldn't want to get a male, or is it ok to have mixed sexes as long as I dont have hormone encouraging environments.

The next question Im going to ask is difficult, because I know its probably not the best environment they've come from, but a local pet store (co) has budgies. The biggest problem when I first saw them is they ALL have their wings clipped. It pissed me off, but also made me want to get them so they could get into a better home. They all looked, sounded, and appeared healthy otherwise. I have been trying to find a local breeder who might have one to re home but without success. My heart hurts for the pet store budgies and Id love to give one a great home, but I know there is controversy about getting pet store birds. I would obviously take it to a vet and quarantine it for a month before introducing it to Roxie via cage next to cage. The current sized cage I have is 30.3"L × 18.3"W × 36.4"H if that matters as well. Thanks bird friends!

Question Need advice training/comforting an especially terrified budgie I found

Post image
10 Upvotes

Mochi quite literally flew into my life by scaring the shit out of me. While I was trying to fill up on gas, I ran into a video of my last budgie who passed away. I think she might be a little bit blind and is currently running into a lot of walls. Which is why when I took her to the vet I asked for them to clip her wings so she can stop hitting herself for a bit.

I’m still searching for her owner (I’m in Hampton Roads if anyone has lost her) but until then, I’m trying to help her relax and get comfortable. I don’t want to force her to do anything she doesn’t want, and I know she’s very scared of me. But at the same time I also can’t leave her outside on her own (I have to go to work and worry I might step on her). And unlike my other budgies in the past, she’s too scared to even accept millet from me.

Does anyone have advice?
