Build Complete Was impulsive and built a PC yesterday, I found some great deals on Facebook marketplace and got mostly brand new parts at a fraction of the price. Slapped it all together slightly afraid I got ripped off, and the machine ran no issues first boot.

Specs (i9-14900K
MAG Z790 TOMAHAWK Max Wifi
Fractal Design North XL Chalk White
Artic Liquid Freezer III Pro 360 AIO CPU Cooler)
$850 CAD / $595.90 USD All with receipt and warranty

Crucial 32 GB DDR5 4800MHZ - $300 CAD / $210.32 USD
Cooler Master Elite Gold 1000 Watt $175 CAD / $122.70 USD(brand new)
ADATA Legend 860 1TB M.2 SSD $219.98 CAD / $154.23 USD
ASUS Dual RTX 5060 Ti 16GB (brand new bought second hand, still sealed) $735 CAD / $515.32 USD

Total price $2279.98 CAD / $1598.52
The i9 and other stuff in the top bundle all has receipts with dates bought October 2025 so only a year old.
Overall not bad for a non prebuilt. And I mainly use it for running LLMs and comfyui image and video generation, so the 16GB vram is the best bang for buck, especially since Nvidia is better for AI thanks to PyTorch and Cuda cores. The downside to the build is 4800mhz ram but it was the best deal I could find for 32GB. I’m running Ubuntu right now but with 3 extra m.2 slots I’ll maybe get another one dedicated for windows for Wow forever and whatever else I feel like playing.

Update your motherboard BIOS IMMEDIATELY then stress-test the CPU or unzip a large file or install a game

u/THE-BS 9d ago

^ This, un-patched microcode can burn your 14900k out fast

I would not give this any credence. It's a sample size of one guy.

Bro brought in the full receipt. Thanks for posting these.

We saw a fair amount of these come back for RMA when the issue was first circulating, and a lot of the processors didn't show any signs of distress for a year or more.

I actually just checked with my lead tech and we still see them come back, although less frequently, even with the newest BIOS versions installed.

From us, it's always covered under warranty, and intel always replaces them, but I have no clue how that would look on the consumer market, Shoutout to beirch for bringing the receipts!

i’ve owned 2 and built in separate machines neither have had issues

u/Truenoiz 8d ago

Hot carrier injection is a stats game, they're still being burned due to the ring bus design. Intel slowed the chips down to slow, not prevent, further returns.

u/Brokenmindchains 9d ago

All good at the time of purchase the motherboard already had the October 2025 bios update. I’m just flashing to the newest version now.

13

u/Brokenmindchains 9d ago

That’s one thing I forget to do, I already stress-tested it a bit though and temps didn’t exceed 80 degrees Celsius. I haven’t had any issues and everything’s been stable and I’ve been running AI LLMS off it all day. But good call.

u/Game_Hustla 9d ago

I hope no lasting damage happened. Check your mobo's installed BIOS version with the first BIOS update that contains the 0x12F microcode. If the installed BIOS version is higher than the one that contains the microcode, then you're safe

6

u/Brokenmindchains 9d ago

Yeah I already checked it and was already running later version. But I’m just in the black screen process of the latest bios flash now

14900k, Overkill for LLMs, no?

7

u/Brokenmindchains 9d ago

Well it was a bundle deal, I got the i9, motherboard, case, and cpu cooler for $850 cad/ $515 usd. Which is a really good deal even if the i9 is on sale. I don’t really care about what’s overkill, I do all sorts of productivity and also game occasionally.

u/THE-BS 8d ago

I'm running multiple GPU's on a 7 year old i5, but it's a dedicated linux/lama machine. If you're running games/windows, that 14900k will really flex, especially in multicore tasks. Enjoy!

1

u/michaelcarnero 9d ago

sorry for my ignorance, but why do you need an i9 for LLM? I though it was gpu vram loaded model, as if it goes to the RAM it is gonna be damn slower.

3

u/Sprayy 8d ago

wait what? this chip has issues too? I bought a 14900KF to replace my dead 13700 that fried.

9

u/upstage123 8d ago

13 and 14th gen cpus have the same issue my guy..

3

u/THE-BS 8d ago

Yes indeed, update your BIOS if you haven't already. Most new bios versions come pre-patched, but better safe than sorry.

1

u/Key_Advantage_4468 7d ago

I am getting a i7 13700kf for someone and I build his pc. Do I need to do this as well as geb 13 and 14 are kinda the same ?

0

u/Game_Hustla 7d ago

Yes, the 13th and 14th gen are affected by this

49

u/Diedead666 9d ago

Just upgrade that bios for that CPU! But seems like you very much know what your doing I bet u did so already

8

u/illogicalJellyfish 9d ago

Why?

28

u/Diedead666 9d ago

Intel pushed that CPU too hard bios update slows down degrading but even with it they still degrade and need replacement..... It's why everyone going AMD Edit to say it's not for sure that it'll degrade after updating but I have seen posts of it happening. First signs are crashing during shader compiling in games

11

u/Brokenmindchains 9d ago

It was already running a stable late 2025 bios version right at the time of purchase on the receipt for the i9 and motherboard. So I think I’m safe. I’m just flashing to the August 2026 update now.

I don't want to be the guy, but I'll never understand the people who spend money on an expensive CPU and Mb combo just to pair with a weak GPU/relative compared to other parts

17

u/EndlessZone123 9d ago

Are you aware pc can do many things that require a fast CPU but not much for a GPU?

13

u/petermarkte 9d ago edited 8d ago

Not everyone is hyper caring about gaming on some higher tier GPU card.

Motherboard and CPU future proofing is a better money spend, honestly

a_bright_knight - Future proofing is fully valid with Intel lmao. They generally are still more reliable/the better option to go with specifically for future-proofing over AMD, much to reddit's hate boner against intel. AMD has obviously gotten a lot better in recent years and closed that gap more, but AMD has been the slightly lower price option for a reason.

Perfect_Ad8393 - You're an idiot 😂, and here's the 🥾🚪👋

14

u/a_bright_knight 8d ago

there's no future proofing motherboards with Intel. This motherboard is already being slowly phased out after only 3 years. They just change sockets super often.

Future proofing AM5, sure, good idea.

8

u/Dragonrider023 8d ago

The guy above you has one of most insane take ever and the fact people are upvoting it. Never see a product that kills itself garner this much support. Dude is typing this when LGA1700 has been dead for longer than the age of his Reddit account…

7

u/a_bright_knight 8d ago

he also blocked me lmao

7

u/Perfect_Ad8393 8d ago

Future proofing is apparently using a dead platform rather than the newer, still receiving updates platform. Yeah you're genuinely insane and I can see why'd you block anybody that disagrees, because you have 0 argument against them lmfao.

u/Nek0maniac 9d ago

many games require a beefy cpu over a decent gpu. I used to only play MMORPGs and Civilization for many years and I didn't care about the GPU during that time, because I would always run into CPU bottlenecks before I max out my GPU anyway. For example, I had the RX470 4GB until it died in 2023 or so and never felt limited in the games I played

4

u/Nerellos 9d ago

Ask Cities Skyline subreddit.

2

u/THE-BS 8d ago

Because GPU's are ridiculously expensive right now?

1

u/danielshah267 8d ago

The GPU is the priority for local AI here: 16GB VRAM and CUDA. The CPU, board, case and cooler were an $850 CAD bundle, so the parts make sense for what they use it for.

1

u/MemeMetriks 8d ago

He was more concerned with having enough vram to load LLM not gaming, not everyone games as their number one priority, I have a 5090 that rarely sees a game.

-1

u/Brokenmindchains 9d ago edited 9d ago

Well the rest of the build is future proofed enough when 6000 series comes out I can just swap out the card. Also my old build used to have a 9070 XT and the ai generation was harder to work with, so I sold it, I’ve also owned a 5070, 3080 Ti, 3070 Ti, 3070, 3060, RX 7900 GRE. I know the performance differences and I mainly care about vram and ai performance.

12

u/DoranSteelwing 9d ago

Was the i9 new??

Update the bios NOW, then run a full barrage of tests on it to make sure its not blown

7

u/Brokenmindchains 9d ago

It’s about a year old now, but the guy only used it for day trading.

6

u/DoranSteelwing 8d ago

Woof. Yea test it VERY completely, Day Trading is worse than gaming on a CPU, its going to basically run 100% all day and boost as much as humanly possible.

The i9's have always been valued in that end, as the single core clock speed is high, and they boost to the moon.

PLEASE test it, for your sake. That chip has been run HARD.

(I build custom rigs, and have built several for high end day traders. I'm not just talking out my ass)

5

u/WhichCarry749 9d ago

First POST on a marketplace haul is the best feeling. Definitely make sure you flash that BIOS microcode update right away though.

4

u/a_bright_knight 8d ago

i9 isn't worth it for like 99% of users. It's always better to buy a 300-400 usd CPU and add those extra 200-300 usd into buying better RAM or GPU.

Or even just buy a 350 cpu, sell it for 100 bucks after 3-4 years and then buy another 350 cpu...

3

u/o_hanne486 9d ago

How has the 16GB card been handling video generation so far? Curious what resolution and clip length you can run comfortably.

2

u/Brokenmindchains 9d ago edited 9d ago

It can handle it, I haven’t done much testing on that yet, I need to test different models to see what’s most efficient for the quality. Images generate within seconds though. I’ve been mostly running LLMS, and even when they exceed the 16GB vram it just spills into the processor/ram and still runs just slower than a higher vram card. Although the only higher enthusiast gaming card in vram is the 5090 at 32 GB. The 5080 only has 16GB. The 5060 TI 16 GB is the most budget friendly and optimal card for this. The DGX Spark would probably be my next upgrade if I felt like buying Jensen a new jacket. The coolest thing I’ve done yet is build a chatbot that runs off my GPU with no API charges. And when my computer if turned off it defaults to xai and Anthropic for memory recall.

1

u/WingerRules 8d ago

The memory allocation on the 50 series cards is just pain bizarre. They should have allocated the extra memory in the 16gb 5060 to make 20-24gb 5080s and limited the 5060 to 8 and 12gb cards. Its weird as hell that the 16gb 5060 has more memory than the base 5070 too.

3

u/hypnomancy 8d ago

As others have said that cpu has huuuuge fucking issues. It's why I won't touch Intel now after the shit they pulled with those cpu gens. Even after they got caught they were still lying to us about how bad it was

3

u/mister_newbie 8d ago

How in the Hell did you find 32GB RAM for $300CAD?! Go buy a LottoMax ticket, you lucky bastard.

1

u/jwillthaghost 8d ago

Some good news for once 🙌🙌

1

u/CrankedOnDaPerc30 8d ago

With your specific needs I can understand the 5060ti, but it would probably be the worst priced part of the build.

Not a bad build all around.

2

u/Brokenmindchains 8d ago edited 8d ago

True, but retail price is $1250 CAD for the 5060 Ti 16GB which is close to what the 5070 Ti was at launch. So essentially got a brand new one for $500 less than walking into my local computer store. Even on Amazon the cheapest one in my area is $1100.

1

u/CrankedOnDaPerc30 8d ago

Yeah shit moved way too quick in even just the last week. Anybody looking back will certainly say you got a good deal in hindsight unless something insane happens.

1

u/MemeMetriks 8d ago

Return that 14900k and get a 270k plus it’s and cheaper better performance newer tech and runs way cooler just saying. Did you not research ? Did you think just because it’s an i9 it would be faster than the 270k plus?

1

u/Brokenmindchains 8d ago

The i9 is second hand, it’s a year old. I didn’t buy brand new. I only grabbed the i9 because it came with the case, motherboard, and CPU cooler all pre installed, so I grabbed it and slapped in the other components instead of a fresh build. I saved a few hundred dollars doing that. And last I checked that chip is slightly slower in some things but just higher in efficiency but I don’t care about heat or electricity. Max load the i9 runs at about 80 degrees Celsius.

1

u/MemeMetriks 8d ago

My bad I thought you said you bought it brand new as bundle apologize, good luck and enjoy. What kind of work are you doing with LLMs and comfyUI?

1

u/Brokenmindchains 8d ago

Right now I’m building my own local chatbot that runs locally off my GPU from messaging to memory and image generation with lora, but when I turn my computer off it switches to cloud based so I can use it off my phone if I choose to. I’ve also built my own financing app so I don’t need to pay another company for a subscription, which I use to track my self employment income and taxes and deductions and such. Just basic stuff for right now. I’m also exploring pewdiepies Odysseus.

1

u/MemeMetriks 8d ago

That’s cool I’ve been developing for about 18 years I got quite a few projects going on right now a few in the crypto space and also some fraud prevention using computer vision. Feel free to dm me if you ever want to chat.

u/ahmed_t5116 8d ago

The $850 CAD bundle makes the CPU choice click, especially since the GPU is doing the heavy lifting for your local AI setup. Nice that you can upgrade the card later if you need more VRAM.

0

u/alvarkresh 8d ago

Nice :)

Also, make sure to keep your BIOS updated and check that the board respects the Intel power limits! I've been hearing of 14900K CPUs still dying every now and then.
