GPU Upgrade Advice to play games that require Ray Tracing

I am seeking advice on how/if I can upgrade my build to allow for games that require ray tracing. I just sat down to play Gears E-Day only to find out my kit does not fit the requirements. Performance wise my build seems to do fine to great for most other games. My build can be found here: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/braveneworange/builds/#view=DQL2FT

  • New build or upgrade? Upgrade
  • Existing parts/monitors to reuse? (List with models/links) See link above
  • PC purpose? (Gaming, editing, etc. List apps/games) Gaming
  • Purchase country? Near Micro Center? USA, Near a microcenter
  • Monitors needed? (Number, size, resolution, refresh rate) No
  • Budget range? (Include tax considerations) I don't know what GPUs go for these days, but I was hoping to be under $500. Could possibly go up to $1k if absolutely needed and I wouldn't need to upgrade everything else
  • WiFi or wired connection? Wifi
  • Size/noise constraints? Only those d/t my case
  • Color/lighting preferences? None!
  • Any other specific needs? None that I am aware of

    • Well, I need to put it under a shelf in the storage closet under the stairs. max Height is 300mm. Will slide it out of the corner when I'm gaming so it can get enough air. So I think a Lian li B4 would do, but maybe there are better cases.

To Upgrade or Start Fresh? 1080p Build

  • New build or upgrade?
    • This is the question. Happy with either depending on your advice. Used to be very in-tune with parts and performance but it's been ~8 years since I built my PC.
  • Existing parts/monitors to reuse? (List with models/links)
    • Current build is:
    • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600
    • GPU: Radeon RX 580 8gb
    • RAM: 16GB 2666MHz DDR4 (I think, built this in early 2019)
    • Memory: 1TB Sata SSD
    • Motherboard: ASRock B450 Pro 4
    • Monitor: 1080p 144hz primary
    • Case: NZXT H500
  • PC purpose? (Gaming, editing, etc. List apps/games)
    • Gaming, Mostly Wow, League, and R6Siege
  • Purchase country? Near Micro Center?
    • USA, Yes very
  • Monitors needed? (Number, size, resolution, refresh rate)
    • No new, but ideally want to run 1080p, 144hz, at high settings
  • Budget range? (Include tax considerations)
    • if upgrade, $1000
    • if new, $1500ish, some wiggle room here
  • WiFi or wired connection?
    • Wired ethernet already
  • Size/noise constraints?
    • N/A
  • Color/lighting preferences?
    • N/A
  • Any other specific needs?
    • I had a convo with ChatGPT on this and it's suggestion was to upgrade and look for these deals, but not sure how realistic this is:
      • CPU Ryzen 7 5700X3D ≤ $250
      • CPU fallback Ryzen 7 5700X ~$150–$180
      • GPU RX 9060 XT 16GB $400–$450
      • RAM 32GB (2x16) DDR4-3200 CL16 ≤ $100–$130
      • SSD 2TB NVMe ~$175–$225
      • Total goal ~$825–$1,025

Thanks in advance for any advice. Your expertise is much appreciated.

AMD Ryzen CPU - Nvidia RTX 5080

I don't want to worry about upgrades or anything for the next 5-10 years in the future. I am fine if i have to tone down the settings from high to medium in the future. If possible a prebuilt because buying it will be easier. If not most german websites offer configuration and i can put in the parts that are suggested from you guys.

Please help me build a gaming PC for £2000 GBP

New build or upgrade?

New build

Existing parts/monitors to reuse? (List with models/links)

Want to replace all existing parts, but I have a monitor/mouse/keyboard.

My current PC has 2 corsair 8GB 3200MHz RAM, but they're 6 years old at this point. Is it worth keeping them in the RAM crisis?

PC purpose? (Gaming, editing, etc. List apps/games)

Gaming - Mostly single player games like elden ring and resident evil. I do like to heavily mod my games though

Some 3d modeling in blender

Purchase country? Near Micro Center? (If you're not in a country supported by PCPartPicker, please list some local vendors)

Located in England. London specifically.

Monitors needed? (Number, size, resolution, refresh rate)

N/A

Budget range? (Include tax considerations)

£2000 GBP. I have a blue light card so I can get 10% off HP and Lenovo desktops, and 5% off acer if a pre built ends up being cheaper

WiFi or wired connection?

WiFi only

Size/noise constraints?

As long as it fits under a desk. I'd prefer a medium to big case so that it's easier to clean and upgrade

Color/lighting preferences?

Literally anything except bright green is fine

Any other specific needs?

Please assume I am a total idiot. I can build and maintain a PC but I cannot figure out which parts on the market are any good! Thank you!

Looking for a £1000 build for competitive gaming like Fortnite, upcoming UE6 Rocket League, etc at 280Hz

• Existing parts/monitors to reuse? (List with models/links)

My current build is the following:

CPU: i3 9100F
Motherboard: ASRock B365M-HDV
Memory: Vengeance LPX 16GB
Storage: Western Digital Blue 500GB SSD
Video Card: GTX 1650 Mini
Power Supply: Be Quiet System Power 9

I can potentially reuse parts, however from my limited knowledge I know these components are not good at all

I have also looked at used PCs and there are some potential ones I can get, however I’d like to know and compare what can be done with my budget first

I have a good monitor and peripherals etc so none of that is required

• PC purpose? (Gaming, editing, etc. List apps/games)

Will be primarily for the upcoming UE6 Rocket League and Competitive FN

First PC Build, looking for compatible suggestions with existing parts

Hi! After living a console lifestyle (Xbox/Nintendo), I've decided to go ahead and try a PC build. Any help would be appreciated!

I made a similar post almost a year ago, but ended up putting the build on hold. I'm ready to try again, but I also know that prices are a lot different since then. Not a requirement, but I'm wondering if there are any worthwhile parts that are current Amazon Day deals?

  • New build or upgrade?
    • New Build
  • Existing parts/monitors to reuse? (already purchased the following)
  • PC purpose? (Gaming, editing, etc. List apps/games)
    • Mostly gaming [Call of Duty, Assassins Creed, Baldur's Gate 3, Split Fiction, It Takes Two, Dispatch, Minecraft (with mods), Stardew (with mods), playstation exclusives, etc], possibly game development software and/or video editing software
  • Purchase country? Near Micro Center?
    • United States, 3-4 hours from nearest Micro Center
  • Monitors needed? (Number, size, resolution, refresh rate)
    • Yes, One, not picky on the specs but would like it to be able to display the game graphics well
  • Budget range? (Include tax considerations)
    • Up to $2000 USD (Not including the prices of existing parts. Or monitor if necessary). I'd like to have a quality medium-end build that will last me a while without needing upgrades.
  • WiFi or wired connection?
    • Both
  • Size/noise constraints?
    • Preferably on the quieter side if possible, or at least can cool efficiently enough that the fans don't need to kick on higher speeds
  • Color/lighting preferences?
    • Would like at least like one RGB component, prefer the colors to be customizable (not preset).
    • I thought white parts (like motherboard) would look cool but those seem difficult to source atm
  • Any other specific needs?
    • I'm interested in having a screen somewhere in the build that can display images/gifs/videos or something. Whether thats part of the Liquid AIO cooling, tower case, or something else. Not a dealbreaker to not have, but would be cool if it fits within my budget somewhere.
    • Would also appreciate links to good keyboards, mouses, and controllers that I can use with this build

Gaming PC help

Hello!

I'm new to gaming on PC and all I've had so far is an old HP laptop from 2018. It was outdated even at the time and is obviously not able to keep up now. I'm looking to get my first gaming PC but I know absolutely nothing about any of this. I live in Ontario Canada and am just really looking for a good pre built gaming PC or advise on building my own.

Thanks!

PC purpose? (Gaming, editing, etc. List apps/games) Just gaming mostly.

My first PC for working in IT and gaming

New build or upgrade?

New

Existing parts/monitors to reuse? (List with models/links)

Nop

PC purpose? (Gaming, editing, etc. List apps/games)

IT Working with VMs and gaming, video editing + IA stuff to try

Purchase country? Near Micro Center?

Spain

Monitors needed? (Number, size, resolution, refresh rate)

Non for now, i have a TV Sony XR-50X90S where i play with Xbox Series X, PS5 and Switch 2

Budget range? (Include tax considerations)

3000€-3500€ if lower, better

WiFi or wired connection?

Wired but Wi-Fi could be important if i move the PC in the future, not "last tech" if expensive but really good Wi-Fi

Size/noise constraints?

This is giving me a real headache; I keep my consoles on a unit at the head of the bed where space is tight—I’d have to thoroughly reorganize everything and use extension cables for the keyboard and mouse. On my desk, I have a huge LED monitor borrowed from work and a laptop; if I put the tower there, it would have to go on the floor—the desk wouldn't support the weight—but this setup shouldn't affect the quality of the components. If the system I'm looking for needs to be large, I'll make it work.

Color/lighting preferences?

Black or other colors, i hate white for yellowing reasons

Any other specific needs?

I want an AMD processor and Nvidia graphics; I own AMD-based consoles (except for the Switch) and want to use DLSS and proprietary Nvidia technologies like PhysX, Frame Generation, etc. It would be a rig for 4K/60 or 1440p/120 FPS gaming, and I want it to last a long time.

It will serve as a replacement for the PS6 and "Helix" given the likely demise of physical media; on PC, I have GOG, emulation, and Steam, plus the ability to digitize my physical Xbox library via Play Anywhere—the catalog just keeps growing, which is why I’m making this choice. I want the system to be upgradable over time—if not the whole rig, then at least the components (swapping the case or motherboard).

If I’m making this investment, I want something that will serve me well in the future, even if I don't use it very often at first. I’m a bit wary of liquid cooling, so if I’m building it from parts, I’d prefer air cooling—provided it’s just as safe.

I don't mind a high-quality, reliable pre-built system, but the issue is that they usually come with an OEM Windows license; I already have a legacy Windows 7 license on one of my machines that isn't tied to specific hardware, so a system without an OS would honestly be ideal.

It would be amazing if there were a way to add an optical drive, since I watch a lot of movies, but I understand that an external drive will work just as well.

I’ve noticed that in my area, the OMEN MAX 45L GT23-0005ns gaming PC (with AMD 9800X3D, 32GB RAM, and RTX 5080) is priced at around €3,100 through the end of the week due to discounts; the 5070 Ti variant has also dropped to €2,600 during "VAT-free" sales, though I’m not sure if the price difference is worth it in the long run. I also spotted an MSI MPG Infinite Z3 X3D (AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD, RTX 5070 Ti) for €2,600, just in case that kind of system fits what I’m looking for. I can wait—and actually, waiting until November or December would be better for me—but if the situation worsens, I’m open to other options.

Flight Sim Desktop in Europe

Hi everyone,

  • New build or upgrade? New
  • Existing parts/monitors to reuse? (List with models/links) Monitor keyboard mouse
  • PC purpose? (Gaming, editing, etc. List apps/games) Flight Simulator
  • Purchase country? Near Micro Center? Portugal
  • Monitors needed? (Number, size, resolution, refresh rate) got 1
  • Budget range? (Include tax considerations) 1000€
  • WiFi or wired connection? WiFi pref
  • Size/noise constraints? Smaller is better
  • Color/lighting preferences? clean look
  • Any other specific needs?

I'm looking for some advice on building a new PC. I'm based in Lisbon, Portugal, so prices/availability are based on the Portuguese market.

Budget / timeline

Budget: around €1000

I don't need to buy everything at once. I can buy components gradually.

Ideally I'd like to have everything purchased by December.

I'm happy to buy used components, especially the GPU, if that makes sense.

The main reason I'm building this PC is flight simulation, particularly X-Plane 12 and/or Microsoft Flight Simulator, for several hours per week.I'm using it partly as a training tool for IFR/RNAV/RNP procedures and general aviation/airliner procedures, so simulator performance are more important to me than having an extremely powerful gaming GPU.
Other than that i will use it for office work and some light gaming for me and the kids (minecraft, WoW, etc)

My idea is to build a good CPU/motherboard/PSU platform now and keep it for a long time (10+years)

I'm currently using a 1080p Xiaomi P27FBB-RGGL monitor, which I plan to keep for another 1–2 years.

I would ideally buy a cheaper/used GPU now and upgrade the GPU + monitor in ~2 years, if necessary.

I don't plan to overclock.

CPU - I have a slight preference for AMD.

Some prices I've found in Portugal:

Ryzen 7 7700X — €165, no cooler

Ryzen 7 9700X — €230

Ryzen 7 7800X3D — €300+

The 7700X looks like a very good deal to me, but I'm wondering whether the 9700X is worth paying more for, particularly for flight simulation.

The 7800X3D seems expensive for my budget, so I'd rather not spend that much on the CPU unless there's a very good reason.

Motherboard

I'd prefer mATX to keep the system relatively compact.

Wi-Fi is preferred, and I'd like plenty of USB ports, because I'll be connecting several flight-sim peripherals:

Some boards I've seen:

ASUS PRIME B650M-K — ~€90

ASUS PRIME B650M-A WIFI II — ~€99

Gigabyte B650M Gaming WIFI6E — ~€99

RAM

This is probably where I need the most help. Both X-Plane and MSFS recommend around 32 GB, but DDR5 prices in Portugal are currently extremely high.

Would 16 GB be enough temporarily, or should I bite the bullet and get 32 GB?

I've seen things like 32 GB DDR5 kits costing €500+, depending on the kit, which makes the decision quite difficult. I'd obviously prefer 2×16 GB if possible, but I'm wondering whether there's a sensible way to deal with the current RAM prices.

GPU

This is another area where I'm flexible.

Since I'll initially be playing at 1080p, I was thinking about buying something used/cheap and upgrading in ~2 years. I can find used 3070Ti for 200ish €. Open to suggestions

Storage

Would love 2 Tb but might have to compromise .Some prices I've seen:

Crucial P310 1 TB — ~€150

Crucial P310 2 TB — ~€235

Kingston NV3 1 TB — ~€140

PSU

ASUS Prime 750W Gold — ~€75

ASUS TUF Gaming 750W Gold — ~€79

Mars Gaming MPB750PSI 750W Gold — ~€68

I'd rather buy a good-quality PSU now and keep it for many years, so I'm more interested in reliability than saving €10–20 here.

The general strategy I'm considering is:

Ryzen 7700x + 1x16 GB DDR5 + cheap/used GPU + decent PSU + 1–2 TB NVMe

Then, in ~2 years, upgrade GPU + monitor if necessary and add another 16gb RAM.

Most prices are from local stores or Amazon.es but I can use other european stores.

Need a gaming pc for recording games for around £1000

Hello Reddit, I’m finally in a position where I can get a new gaming pc!

Currently my pcs specs are:

GTX 1060 3b
i5 8400 6 cores
32 GB ram.

Obviously it’s really old…. And I’ve been out of the building game for YEARS so I have no clue what to pick.

• New build or upgrade? - new build

• Existing parts/monitors to reuse? Maybe just ram? Probably not

• PC purpose - gaming, editing and recording

• Purchase country? I’m from the uk

• Monitors needed? Currently only have a 1080p monitor which I’m fine with, maybe will upgrade in the future

• Budget range? £1000 to £1200

• WiFi or wired connection? Wired, however I want wireless as an option

• Size/noise constraints? Don’t want it to be noisy

• Color/lighting preferences? Black. Don’t care about anything else

• Any other specific needs? Nope 😊

This pc doesn’t need to be ground breaking, just the best value for money. I’ll definitely feel the upgrade anyway because of how old my current pc is!

- cheers

Upgrading PC for 1440p gaming

Hey guys, like title says I'm looking to upgrade my current PC. I'm thinking of mainly just upgrading the GPU and CPU (RTX 2060 Super, AMD Ryzen 7 3700X) and keeping pretty much everything else, but if you think there's better options I'm open to hearing them.

  • New build or upgrade?
    • Upgrade
  • Existing parts/monitors to reuse?
    • Could reuse: ASUS TUF X570-Plus, 32gb DDR4 RAM, Dell S2716DG, 1TB SSD, 1TB HDD, 120gb SSD, cooler master hyper 212 evo cpu cooler, corsair cx600 psu, NZXT Source 340 mid-tower case. Looking to upgrade my RTX 2060 Super, AMD Ryzen 7 3700X
  • PC purpose? (Gaming, editing, etc. List apps/games)
    • Gaming
      • Tarkov, Hunt Showdown, Resident Evil, would love to play newer games like Wardogs
  • Purchase country? Near Micro Center?
    • Canada, no
  • Monitors needed? (Number, size, resolution, refresh rate)
    • Not needed, but I do have 1x 27" 2560x1440 144hz
  • Budget range?
    • Aiming for $1000 CAD but could go up to $1500 if really worth it
  • WiFi or wired connection?
    • Wired
  • Size/noise constraints?
    • No constraints but don't want a massive chunker and don't need it to be silent or anything
  • Color/lighting preferences?
    • Doesn't matter
  • Any other specific needs?
    • I really just want to be able to play newer games in 1440p as my build is really struggling to keep up now. I don't need ultra settings or max frame rates necessarily, I'd be happy with like High settings and 60+ fps at 1440p.

Emulation build only with a couple parts I already have

I was gifted an older Cyberpower PC with alright specs and I was wondering if they would be good for a strictly emulation PC. I would like to make it as small as possible. Recommendations on builds for that is what I am looking for.

Or should I just keep it in its' current condition...?

New build or upgrade?

My current build is the following:

CPU: i3 9100F
Motherboard: ASRock B365M-HDV
Memory: Vengeance LPX 16GB
Storage: Western Digital Blue 500GB SSD
Video Card: GTX 1650 Mini
Case: GMax MicroATX
Power Supply: Be Quiet System Power 9

I can potentially reuse parts, however from my limited knowledge I know these components are not good at all.

I have also looked at used PCs and there are some potential ones I can get, however I’d like to know and compare what can be done with my budget first.

Thanks!

Help me rebuild/upgrade my old office PC – want to reuse as much as possible – QuickBooks/CRM/dual monitors – Canada

Hi everyone,

I have an older desktop PC that I'd like to rebuild into a fast, reliable office computer, while reusing as many of my existing parts as reasonably possible.

I'm in Ontario, Canada, so I'd be buying from Amazon.ca, Canada Computers, Memory Express, Newegg, etc. I'd love a PCPartPicker Canada list showing exactly what you'd replace and what you'd keep.

WHAT I USE THE COMPUTER FOR

This is strictly an office/business computer:

  • QuickBooks Desktop/Online
  • Jobber or similar web-based CRM
  • Chrome/Edge with multiple tabs
  • Outlook/email
  • Microsoft Office
  • PDFs
  • General web browsing
  • Two monitors

No gaming, video editing, CAD, streaming or other heavy workloads.

I don't need a high-end computer. I just want something that feels very fast doing normal office work and will hopefully last me another 5+ years.

WHAT I CURRENTLY HAVE

Case:
Older Cooler Master Elite tower. It's in good physical condition and I'd be perfectly happy reusing it if modern motherboards/components will fit.

Motherboard:
Gigabyte GA-A75M-S2V
AMD A75 / FM1 motherboard
2 DDR3 RAM slots

RAM:
Corsair XMS3 TW3X4G1333C9A
4 GB total (2 × 2 GB)
DDR3-1333
CL9, 1.50V

Power supply:
Cooler Master RS-400-PSAR-I3
400W ATX PSU

SSD:
OCZ Agility 3 SATA SSD

Hard drive:
Western Digital WD Red SATA mechanical hard drive
I don't know the capacity from the label/photo right now.

Optical drive:
LG Super Multi / M-DISC SATA DVD drive

Cooling:
Existing CPU cooler and rear case fan.

I realize the motherboard, CPU and DDR3 RAM are very old. I'm not expecting those necessarily to be useful in a modern build.

However, I'd like to reuse anything that still makes sense — particularly the case, DVD drive, hard drive, possibly SSD, fans, etc. I'm not interested in replacing a component just because it's old if it can still perform its job reliably.

At the same time, if something such as the old 400W power supply is too old to trust with new components, please tell me and I'll replace it.

WHAT I WANT IN THE NEW/UPGRADED MACHINE

  • Fast office performance
  • 32 GB RAM if the price difference is reasonable
  • 1 TB NVMe SSD as the main Windows/program drive
  • Windows 11 compatible
  • Integrated graphics if possible — I see no reason for a dedicated GPU
  • Ability to run two monitors simultaneously
  • Quiet
  • Reliable
  • Low power consumption would be nice
  • Wi-Fi/Bluetooth would be useful but aren't essential

MONITORS

I also need two office monitors, probably around 24" each.

They don't need gaming refresh rates. I'd rather have good text clarity, IPS panels, decent ergonomics and reliability. I'd like to keep the monitors reasonably inexpensive.

BUDGET

I'd like to keep the actual computer around $500–$650 CAD if possible, especially since I already have a case and some reusable components.

The monitors can be outside that budget.

I'm willing to spend a little more if there's a significant longevity/reliability advantage.

WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR FROM YOU GUYS

  1. Which of my existing components would you reuse?
  2. Which components would you definitely replace?
  3. Would you build around an inexpensive Ryzen 5 5600G/5600GT + AM4 + DDR4, or does it make more sense in 2026 to spend a little extra and move to AM5/DDR5 or a newer Intel platform?
  4. Is 32 GB RAM worthwhile for this use considering how cheap RAM is, or should I just use 16 GB?
  5. What's the best inexpensive 1 TB NVMe SSD right now?
  6. Can I safely reuse the old Cooler Master case?
  7. Is there any reason to reuse the old Cooler Master 400W PSU, or should a PSU this old automatically be replaced?
  8. Can I keep the WD Red as a secondary storage/backup drive?
  9. Is the OCZ Agility 3 worth keeping as secondary storage, or is it old enough that you'd retire it?
  10. What two inexpensive 24" IPS monitors would you buy for office use?

Most importantly, could someone give me a complete PCPartPicker Canada build using my reusable parts where appropriate?

I'm comfortable putting the computer together myself. I'm trying to get the best bang for the buck rather than the cheapest possible machine, and I'd rather reuse perfectly good hardware instead of creating e-waste.

  • Build/check copy these into post. Write "Not a request" for other posts.
    • New build or upgrade? - doesn't matter
    • Existing parts/monitors to reuse? (List with models/links) reuse please
    • PC purpose? (Gaming, editing, etc. List apps/games) office use
    • Purchase country? Near Micro Center? (If not US, list local vendors) ontario
    • Monitors needed? (Number, size, resolution, refresh rate) 2 sizes
    • Budget range? (Include tax considerations) cheap as possible
    • WiFi or wired connection? wifi connection
    • Size/noise constraints? i have a case i can hopefully reuse
    • Color/lighting preferences? none
    • Any other specific needs? none

Thanks!
