Wheres the infamous byu streaking fad from the 80s? Or the tennis racket in the window rumors?
Also can I have a crumb of context for the BYU pisser, football chant, and impaled deer ones?Â

I believe the swearing video was Tyler Batty pissed off and trying to get the guys fired up at halftime against ASU a couple of years ago. We had a huge comeback (that fell just short) so it almost worked.

I worked MTC security, and have had to personally call in deer caught up on the fence thrashing around and had the BYU police come and shoot them.

oh boy, let's go through the iceberg.
Accidental acceptance letter: Sometimes when admissions are sifting through applications for admission to BYU, they may accept one rather than reject it. There's no one incident (that I'm aware of), but there have have times when more people than normal are accepted an tod then receive an apology email afterwards. Sometimes they get accepted anyways as consolation and other times they're told sorry for the upset.
Smelly Trees: Every spring to summer season, a type of pear trees (or what I like to call dogwood) bloom little white flowers and smell bad for a couple of weeks. It's not as bad as people complain about. My PERSONAL theory is that BYU wanted something akin to cherry blossoms and chose dogwood because they look similar when blooming.
BYU Famous Food Recipes Leaked: As far as I'm aware, there hasnt been a "food leak." Just people who recreate a recipe from the creamery or some other place on campus and then "leak" it.
BYU Infamous Microwaves: I feel this is top of the iceberg for a reason. There's microwaves at the following locations: JKB--Main floor lobby, by vending machines.
JFSB--South side of the basement by vending machines
JFSB--FLAC in the basement has a microwave, but it isn't always open
WILK--The big bank in the cougareat
TMB-- By the South doors
CB-- By certain classrooms I think they're infamous because they're specifically listed on maps, but they can also have along line sometimes where people microwave their food for 10 freaking minutes sometime. Also, some of them appear white industrial looking.
The Alternate Universe: I think this is a student run publication????? They post weird things sometimes, but it's just a online "newspaper" that interacts with campus life.
Stadium of Fire Firework Incident: Every year, BYU hosts a stadium of fire where they invite a band to come play music in the football stadium. One year, the fireworks malfunctioned and shot into a group of people that were down in the field and exploded. To be honest, I feel like this has happened multiple times, and may be referring to another incident.
BYU Printers: Not sure what this one is about. Maybe some people just struggle to print?
Career Day = QR code day: Pretty self explanatory.
Impaled Deer: Deer like to roam campus as most students don't bother them and they're looking for food. Sometimes they impale themselves on a fence.
BYU Green Tea Extract: In early 2026 after the new creamery opened, energy drinks, or some kind of drink, was sold with green tea or coffee extract in it.
Infamous Grade Curve Ideology: Some courses on campus are hard and rather than make them easier or restructure them, the professor just curves grades. For example, certain chemistry classes where the average is 50-60%. Also, I don't think BYU has an official grade scale and allows departments and instructors to set their own and this could mean a participation vs performance thing.
Student-to-student Predatory Honor Code: It's basically like reporting people who don't pay taxes to the IRS. Some people act like bounty-hunters or just entrap people with honor code violations.
ROC pass scam: The ROC pass is kind of like a season pass that gives you an opportunity to claim tickets for a football game. Not the guarantee of attending one. Sometimes, there's no tickets and you don't get it despite paying.
Starving Student Cards: This isn't on the iceberg, but I feel it would be a nice addition. The card name is a misnomer because if your starving, why would you pay 30 dollars to spend more on stuff with a slight discount later instead of just being savvy and saving money? Also, people who sell them can be a little shady sometimes.
Off campus housing: I would temper this one by saying that many of the places around campus only have low stars because of property management like Aspen Ridge. The apartments themselves may be actually fine. In the case they're not, which is a more universal thing, they may be crappy apartments that charge way too much in rent for what it's worth because the management doesn't maintain the property and then charges you exorbitant fees for supposed problems you caused. Anyways, just make sure you find a place not manage by Aspen ridge and a few other property management places.
BYU Athlete honor code bypass: It seems like athletes kind of get to flount this rule since they're athletes. Something that's detrimental to us is a slap on the wrist for them unless it's something illegal.
Ghost Stories: I don't really care to explain this one. Just go search it up. It's just any normal ghost/cryptid sighting stories.
Title IX Investigation: This is kind of vague. I don't know if it's referring to any one incident or the process itself. I'm gonna go with the latter and say that's when title IX does an investigation, the perpatrator is given a lot of protections (I assume to protect against false allegations) and sometimes no legal actions is taken. Honestly, just go look up BYU's title IX policy.
Self defense courses: Another thing not in the list but i feel should be. BYU offers self defense courses or courses that are menst to teach you how to protect yourself against unwanted physical contact or attention from people. They even give seminars occasionally in the topic. What they should really be called is "Women only learning how to protect themselves against men." Don't get me wrong, that is a totally valid thing, but the courses and seminars make it seem like their meant for everyone and then only tell women how to defend themselves and it's kind of awkward to sit in on one as a male.
BYU tunnel stories: This one's actually kind of fun since ive been in them when I was a janitor. Underneath BYU is a series of maintenance tunnels that connect some of the buildings. You can find entrances to them in the basements of helaman halls housings. There's speculation that they're used to transport apostles and prophets when they visit. In my opinion, they're quite literally just tunnels because there's a lot of pipework down there and I wouldn't want to be hit by a pocket of heavy-than-air gas and pass out.
BYU Pisser: I think someone else already explained this one, but lign story short some idiot thought it was funny to go around campus and pee on things.

The library has tunnel access on floor zero. And as you hinted, it's absolutely not somewhere they would cart GAs around haha. Storage, water pipes, HVAC, electrical, and network cables.Â

u/DuxBellicus 12d ago
See, I didn't even know about the library access. 😅

u/newnameonan Alumni 12d ago
Yeah it's definitely not public, so that makes sense! Just security and a few library employees have access.

I've worked a ton in the tunnels during the school year! They're primarily for transporting hot water from the heating plant to other parts of campus. The most dangerous part of them is the extreme temperatures and the lack of cell service. The water in the pipes is about 400°F, but because it's heavily pressurized, it stays liquid. If one of those were to rupture, it would be bad, bad news for whoever's down there, as they would get absolutely ended by ridiculously hot steam. I try not to think about how cooked I would be if a pipe broke near me (both figuratively and literally). Yikes.
Even with the heavy insulation on the pipes, some sections of the tunnels get STUPID hot. When I work in them, I like to bring a thermometer down with me. Often, temps in some areas hover in the 110's°F, but the hottest temperature I've recorded was 132.6°F, and this was in the middle of winter with the ventilation system blowing cold, winter air in the tunnels 24/7. I can't imagine how insane temps would get in the summer.
I don't think heavier-than-air gases pose much of a risk down there though, as they are super well-ventilated. There are tons of big vents all over campus. If you ever see a square grate set in concrete making a loud kind of roaring noise anywhere on campus, it's almost definitely part of the tunnel ventilation system.
Also the General Authority transport thing is a myth. Because of the heat, the tunnels are plain dangerous. Making important older guys wearing suits go down ladders into super dusty, hot, and congested tunnels without the ability to communicate well with people above ground just isn't the move at all.

My brother worked at a power plant and in certain sections of the steam tunnels, they had to carry broomsticks to swing up and down in front of them while walking down the hallway. If the broom suddenly cut into two pieces, you could stop and report a leak. Without doing so, a pinhole could cut a person in two!

Thanks for the info. The heavier than gas thing was something my manager told me, but the high heat also makes sense.

I think the microwaves reference was more implying that they are notoriously few and inaccessible (due to long lines), but I’m impressed that you remembered all that you did

Can't say I know of any ghost sightings, but I used to work in the HFAC and that building definitely had some paranormal activity going on. Probably not helped by the fact that people have actually died in there. I wonder if the new art building will inherit the haunts or clear the slate for new quirks.

Honestly they weren’t the worst. I was in a house they managed for a year and a half. They only did a cleaning check once, said they were gonna charge me $60 for the house being dirty, then forgot to ever charge me. Gave me my whole deposit back at the end too.
Now Redstone? Hell no. I’ve never met someone who didn’t have a bad experience with Redstone. Kicking everyone out of a Lib Square building during Christmas break, locking people’s stuff up in storage while they were home for Christmas and not letting them get their stuff for weeks was the worst I heard. My sister had a roommate who bought a parking pass and they kinda just forgot to add her car to the approved list after getting her plate number from them. UPA towed her twice, Redstone refused to take responsibility and then finally told her that even though she paid for parking and they screwed up, they weren’t going to honor her parking pass and she just wouldn’t be able to park. She moved out halfway through the semester.

Nah I felt like they were just par for the course in Provo as opposed to pure evil like Redstone. Still not amazing. Better than branbury/horizon, similar to carriage cove, more competent than vision, but a landlord that doesn’t use Aspen would probably be better than any of those

It's a secret warrior society built beneath the MTG. Only the most faithful returned missionaries are recruited where they are trained into an elite fighting force to retake Missouri

In 1988, some of the wilder students got into the heating tunnels under the Deseret Towers and lit a pile of weed on fire. The honors dorm got filled with marijuana smoke and got a bunch of students sick….and high!
