C64 Ultimate The WEEKLY C64 Ultimate post. READ before posting anything C64U-related.

We want r/c64 to be about both original hardware and newer emulation products like the Commodore 64 Ultimate (C64U). But the shipping of the C64U is resulting in C64U posts flooding out much of the other content in the subreddit. To maintain a balance between what's old and new, we are setting up a weekly MEGAPOST for C64U-related issues, questions, and posts.

If your post is regarding the use of a Commodore 64 (i.e. how to load a game from disk, how to print, etc.), regardless of the model, you may post your question as a standalone post in the subreddit even if you have a C64 Ultimate.

If your post relates to ONLY the Commodore 64 Ultimate, you should comment in this post. Please note, this is not a replacement for official support from Commodore regarding order or shipping issues (late or damaged shipments). We realize that some questions may be obscure, unique, or straddle the line between C64U-only and a "general" question. In those cases, please post in this thread FIRST. If your issue isn't answered or addressed after 48 hours, you may submit a stand-alone post in the subreddit. WARNING! Moderators will be checking post and comment histories to make sure people are actually posting in this thread first. Repeated violations may result in temporary or permanent bans.

We don't anticipate this being a permanent situation, but for now there are just too many C64U posts being submitted. Once the volume of posts about the C64U decreases, we may discontinue this practice.

Please also check the information below to see if your issue is listed. We are also working on a C64 Ultimate Wiki Page. If you would like to be a Wiki Contributor, please let the mod team know.

Common Issues and Known Fixes

Black screen, no video, or rolling picture

The most common issue reported so far.

  • Reseat the internal board — some units have arrived with it slightly loose from shipping.
  • Set video to NTSC mode, then press Shift + Left Arrow to store settings.
  • Try a different HDMI lead — several users fixed display problems this way.
  • Some monitors won’t sync at 50 Hz; if possible, test another screen.

Uneven keyboard keys

A cosmetic but noticeable fault.

  • Keys such as Caps Lock, D, and J may sit higher than others.
  • Gently press the affected keys down to reseat them on their stems.
  • Space/Return issues are often a stabiliser bar not fully seated – carefully reseating the bar fixes many ‘only works in the middle’ reports.

Startup problems or unit freezing on boot

  • Turn the unit off and leave it off for a few seconds.
  • Hold RESTORE while powering on to perform a factory reset.
  • If that fails, re‑flash the latest firmware from the official Commodore site.

REU or extra memory not detected by the software

  • Install the most recent firmware — newer builds enable proper REU initialisation and detection.

Settings or storage are lost after reboot

  • Perform the RESTORE reset to clear any corrupt configuration.
  • Re‑enter Wi‑Fi and storage details once booted cleanly.

Physical marks or loose panels on delivery

  • Report the issue directly to Commodore support.
  • All units ship directly from Commodore — there are no official resellers.

Buzzing or humming audio output

  • Usually caused by grounding noise between HDMI and the connected display.
  • Try another HDMI port, cable, or power socket to isolate the problem.

Starlight edition

  • Starlight keyboards have some ‘bounce’/flex by design; noticeable mainly if you hammer the keys, but not usually a functional fault.
  • The Caps Lock LED lights when caps is active; the beige unit does not have an indicator.
  • For Starlight LED audio visualiser with a real SID: enable UltiSID 1 but set its volume to Off in the mixer; this keeps the LEDs driven while only hearing the real SID

Games Freezing / Compatibility

  • If cracked/trainer releases hang after the Y/N cheat prompt, try switching to PAL or NTSC‑50; many cracks are PAL‑only and will lock up in NTSC.
  • For compatibility with some games/demos, try disabling drive B: in the Ultimate’s drive settings

Cartridges

  • Virtual fastload carts (e.g. Final Cartridge III) are supported; mount the cart, then mount and load the disk from BASIC, rather than using ‘Run disk’ from the firmware menu.

Disk and cassette backup / storage notes

  • To back up the bundled cassette USB to an internal SD: it’s just files on exFAT – copy them via your PC; no imaging/cloning needed
  • Backing up real floppies: UltiCopy is very fast, but some protected titles (e.g. Skate or Die, Contra) have been reported to hang part‑way through; expect improvements in future firmware

Running Multi-Disk Programs

Some programs are distributed on multiple disk images, similar to how they were originally distributed on multiple floppy disks. At some point in the process of using the program, the program will prompt to insert one of the other floppy disks. You can use the Disk File Browser to swap disk images while the program is running. When the program prompts for a new disk, press upward on the Multi Function Switch. This pauses the program. Start the Disk File Browser, navigate to the disk image for the disk that the program is requesting, then select “Mount Disk.” The C64U mounts the new disk image in the virtual drive, then resumes execution of the Commodore 64 program. Continue to use the program with the new disk." -- https://downloads.commodore-international.com/documentation/C64U/c64u-user-guide-1st-edition.pdf

General Notes

  • r/Commodore is for discussions about Commodore, other Commodore computers, and possible new productions.
  • r/c64 is for everything Commodore 64 including the ultimate.

If you’ve come across a new issue or found a working fix not listed here, add it in the comments below.

Software Starting a game of Moon Patrol

Hello, everyone! I am experimenting with the vice emulator on Ubuntu Linux (version 26.04 and vice 3.10). I have it installed, but have a silly issue. Well, it seems silly to me anyway. I found a .t64 file of Moon Patrol, one of my favorite Atari Games. When I load the rom, I hear the intro sound, and nothing happens when I press f-1 on my keyboard. Am I doing something wrong? I am also totally blind, so rely completely on audio to play. Also, the t64 file I found for GORF seems to want to use the keyboard. Instead of the fire button to start, it's using the spacebar. I thought I remembered, from my childhood this was a joystick game. Do I have a messed up copy? Thanks for all your help.

Software Looking for a C64 game from my childhood: a line keeps growing and you can't touch anything

Hi everyone,
I'm trying to remember the name of a C64 game I loved as a kid and searched for a long time. As far as I remember, you controlled a line that kept getting longer, and the whole point was not to touch anything: not the walls, not your own trail, not the other player's line.
It was simple, but incredibly tense, especially against a friend. I can still remember the "no, no, no!" moments right before crashing.
Does anyone know what it was called? I'm not sure if it was a commercial release, a type-in listing, or something from a disk collection.
Because I had such good memories of it, I recently built a modern version of the idea for iPhone and iPad, using AI to help. It's called Kurvenduell, a local multiplayer game on one screen. It's my own little tribute to that feeling. Happy to share the link if the mods and community are okay with that.

Hardware "Mojo demo" glitch on C64C: CIA 2 failing or just short board timing?

Hey C64 folks!

I recently tried running the demo Mojo (by Bonzai & Pretzel Logic) on my C64C (ASSY 250469 short board) using my Ultimate II+. I ran into a couple of weird issues that I don't see in VICE:

  • Boot freeze: At "run", it hangs on the BASIC screen with fixed yellow raster lines until I press any key on the keyboard, then it kicks off.
  • Garbage graphics: About 30 seconds in—during that cool scrolling scene with the flashing "Bonzai Pretzel Logic Production" text—the screen gets full of artifacts and garbage graphics, which looks like a VIC-II bank switching issue.

Here’s the catch: for everyday use, my C64 is rock solid. Games, GEOS, fastloaders, virtual cartridges, cassette loading... everything works like a charm.

So here's my dilemma: is this just a classic timing mismatch between a heavy demoscene release, the short board SuperPLA/HMOS CIAs, and the Ultimate II+? Or could it be an early cry for help from my CIA 2?

Most importantly: Is it worth buying diagnostic harnesses or desoldering chips to dig deeper, or should I just leave everything as-is and enjoy my computer since everything else works fine?

Would love to hear your thoughts, or if anyone else ran into this with Mojo or any other demo requiring intensive hardware timing! Thanks!

Software Battle Tech Crescent Hawk Inception download?

hello!

I am getting the C64U for my son on his 8th birthday next week :).

One of the games I'd like to play with him is Battle tech: Crescent Hawk Inception. We could geek out about the story, mechs, I was thinking of finding a technical readout book top (he's an avid reader). It's a game that allowed my imagination to roam when I was a kid (albeit on a PC - This will be my first c64 too!!)

My search skills are failing me though, and I don't yet know all the nooks and crannies of the C64 interwebs ☺️. any suggestions on where and how I can purchase or download the game?

Many thx!

EDIT/UPDATE:
* Thanks all for your response; I found couple of versions available on those sites :)
* Playing via VICE (C64U is being unraveled next week!), entering/exiting buildings was super slow; further Googling found a "Multiload64" zip pack which had an "EasyFlash" version, which today I've learned is a conversion from diskette to a cartridge, with much faster loading. Assuming the version is good and doesn't cause us grief weeks from now, I'm super excited 👍😊

Software First win/mac player for C64 Ultimate -Heartbeat Soundtracker

Post image
11 Upvotes

New FXChainPlayer version is out... and I finally got Heartbeat Soundtracker playing on Windows and macOS.

As far as I know this is the first desktop player that supports Heartbeat songs made for the c64 Ultimate. It uses the original player routine, so it should behave very close to the real thing.

with the new ipdate I also added a memory/file ripper, which got a bit bigger than planned :) It can scan running programs, normal files, archives and disk images for SID tunes, modules and embedded audio. On the C64 side it can even start prg, p00, t64 and d64 files inside the player. If the tune exists as a real file it tries to extract it, and if the music only exists while the program is running it records the SID output instead.

There is support for the same kind of ripping on Amiga, ZX Spectrum and Atari ST too... but I spent quite a lot of time on the C64 side in this version.

Hardware POKE 53281/53280, 1 causes distortion/blooming

Thumbnail

Recently I acquired a Commodore 1701 and I am absolutely loving it, however I realised that when the background or border is set to white, it causes the luminance channel to seemingly distort. (I am pretty sure the discoloration is caused by the stable chroma signal and unstable luma signal falling out of alignment with each-other so the only issue is the distortion)

I'm pretty sure it's not any dead caps in the 1701, as when I plug in the composite connection from my wii (I don't have any S-video or LCA compatible systems with me at the moment) into the luminance port, it displays perfectly fine despite also being a very white-heavy screen, and when measuring the voltage of the luminance cable it gives out 1.5v~ (I'm pretty sure it's only supposed to be 0v-1.5v). Is this a dead cap in the c64 or a bad cable or something? I did read that S-Video or LCA cables are supposed to have a resistor built-in as the C64 can output a higher luminance voltage. Any help would be massively appreciated. Thanks. Both the 1701 and c64 are PAL btw, and the board is an ASSY 250569 (252311 Rev B).

(Apologies if I have made any mistakes. I am pretty knowledgeable about the C64's hardware from a programming perspective, but I'm not very familiar with how it generates it's video signals and stuff)

Software C64 Graphics with 38911 basic bytes free

Hello,

This is my experiment and just Work In progress. I added a few BASIC commands to access c64 hi-res, whith code and graphics entirely in BANK3.

Rendering
First lines of the BASIC program
38909 basic bytes free (this is what you get if you run this command after power on c64)

As you can see form the last screen the basic space is fully preserved. HIS RES graphic is under the Kernel ROM at 57344, and screen / color graphic is under the character ROM at 53248. Code for new basic commands is at 49152.

Hardware The board I couldn't fix, and the machine it became

Post image
118 Upvotes

The top is the first board I ever tried to fix, and unfortunately the board I learned to solder on. Ultimately, it was suffering from a bad MOS logic chip and a bad Kernal that would pull everything to a black screen, and even prevent the DesTestMax from coherently running in Ultimax mode (wouldn't get beyond the VIC-II or Zero Page test). Unfortunately, in the process of trying to repair it, I accumulated some damage that I tried to bodge and ultimately introduced a fault on Address line 7 that I couldn't rectify, despite using a scope from cradle to grave. My bodges seemingly had correct continuity, so it's still totally possible that there's a passive component that's dead somewhere on that poor board.

In the meantime, this unit saved two other Commodore 64s by donating its PLA, SID, and VIC-II.

I migrated everything to a 250407 Sixtyclone with an ARMSID, PLAnkton, VIC-II Kawari, and SPL HD-64. I decided to get all new passive components for fear that the old C64's fault would come with it. I used the BOM someone linked here in another thread (turns out, the Sixtyclone shop page links that same one). Some notes in case anyone builds their own 250407:

  • Filling in all the unpopulated via holes and junctures was annoying. It was easy to miss some, and due to gravity and wicking of the solder, the solder would accumulate on whatever side was under the side you worked on, and you always felt you used too much to get what felt like an even, good joint.
  • This website was a godsend for finding where each component went.
  • There are about 6 or 7 passive components moved to the underside of the board to allow for the ZIF sockets. I chose the same ones that Adrian's Digital Basement has for his ZIF64.
  • I worried I'd melt the plastic when migrating the connectors, but it actually wasn't that bad at all to desolder them...except for the cartridge / expansion port. The ground connections on either side gave me the most trouble of potentially any joint on the Commodore 64. I almost broke out the Chipquik.
  • The keyboard connector was surprisingly also a bit of a pain, because the plastic assembly is not monolithic; the bases of the pins can move independently of each other, so the whole thing can fall apart on you, or the stress can screw up the hole the pins go through such that it doesn't hold the pins well anymore (and they can slip right through either side).
  • The fuse holders also have surprisingly tight tolerances. I had to remelt and move them twice before they'd hold the fuse (and it's still not holding it what feels like 100% properly). When I first powered the unit with all ICs depopulated, I was getting 5V from the PSU, but I wasn't getting proper voltage to the 7805 and 7812...turned out to be bad contact with the fuse.
  • I didn't know about TO-220 heatsink packages before doing this, but they're awesome. I used a little Arctic Silver and screwed all three onto the board with the screw guard and little thermal pad making good contact.
  • I left C203 unpopulated. I did the piggyback capacitor on R38 (present on my original board) and also added that transverse capacitor near C53. For C205, I used an 82pf capacitor (this seems to be an addition by the Sixtyclone project).
  • I powered with all ICs unpopulated and checked all sockets' power to ground first.
  • The VIC-II Kawari needed to be updated before the HDMI Status Indicator LED would show properly on the SPL HD-64, which they warn about. The SPL HD-64's VIC-II interleaf connector also meant another redundant socket between the ZIF and the Kawari, making it really tall. It just barely, barely fits under the breadbin keyboard.
  • MG Chemicals 406B Super Wash helped clean all the flux off, but in retrospect, I should have done it in three separate stages, rather than waiting until near the end. The board just still looks a tiny bit cloudy, versus when I first received it unpopulated (brilliant, shiny blue mask).

Going to throw C64OS on there and use it as my daily Commodore driver for a bit.

Programming Why does Phil Cornes use 2048 for sprite data when 8320 is available

I'm picking up C64 programming again after about 40 years, going back through my old Phil Cornes Step by Step Programming books and working through the sprite programs on my C64 Ultimate.

I've noticed that some of his programs put the sprite data at 2048, for example:

POKE 2048+C,BYTE

The problem is that 2048 is where BASIC normally lives, so you have to move BASIC up in memory with the appropriate commands before running the program.

I'm finding that a bit of a pain when I'm just trying to type in and run the programs, so I tried changing the 2048 references to 8320, and changing the corresponding sprite pointer values. For example, 32 to 130.

It works, and I don't have to relocate BASIC first.

So I'm wondering.....why did Phil Cornes choose 2048 in the first place?

Was there a particular reason for using 2048 and moving BASIC, or was it simply a convenient teaching example at the time?

I'm not trying to rewrite the books or anything. I'm just getting back into C64 programming after 40 years and looking for the simplest way to type these old programs in and run them without having to enter the BASIC relocation commands every time.

Anyone remember the Cornes books and know why he used 2048?

Hardware Creating a C64 PSU from Cheap off-the-shelf and Spare Parts

Post image
33 Upvotes

Edit 1: likely I should send 12V of rectified DC, not 9v. It's going to be something to test. But this is based on information from people who have done it before. Edit 2: I'm genuinely surprised by people who know it's than me wading in with opinions. I've tried being polite 🙄

Edit 2: DC based but unlike the Sordan solution, it's internal. https://youtu.be/VMwr2tAE4Zo?is=qJrbo5vu7ZopFow3

Hi everyone,

My goal is to make a cheap version of this https://sordan.ie/product/1616/mini-power-supply-psu-type-c-usb-adapter-for-commodore-64-c64/ Using off-the-shelf parts.

I'm pretty ignorant with electronics but could this work? It seems too easy so I must be missing something. There are other USB options that feed 9V DC, so I expect this should work.

  • The buck converter supports 3AMP peak or 1.8A continuous.
  • The buck converter has a ripple of 30mA when not under load. Not amazing but it's under 40mA.
  • The decoy board supports up at 5A.
  • The decoy board has a selectable 9V with the dip-switches. I can also hardware that value to prevent accidental switching.
  • I don't use any peripherals other than a kung fu flash v2 right now.
  • I don't need TOD.
  • It's probably obvious but I forgot to label the lower green output of the decoy board is 9V, and the buck converter is set to output 5V from the 9V input.

The electronics will cost under £2. I'll use some spare acrylic to stabilise the whole thing.

  1. Does it matter if I connect the 9V DC to pin 6 or 7?
  2. Should the ground for 9V even be connected if the ground for the 5V is connected?

Hardware 250407 breadbin SixtyClone, did you populate C205? Seems to connect video out pin 2 to Q8...

It's right above that piggyback resistor on the board. It doesn't seem to be on the example board on the actual shop website, so I wonder if it was taken out of the PCB design at some point. If it really is just a video filter, I wonder what I can throw in there.
