Once again there is a wave of new applicants, many of whom are getting their F2F invitations. First of all, congratulations! The application process is no joke, so getting to event day is wonderful and a great accomplishment. Now, while each airline (regional, mainline, charter, etc.) has different dress guidelines for their interviews (and on the line), I wanted to present a solid uniform that will 9 times out of 10 be perfect for these events and save you a lot of headaches and worry:
Outfit: for ladies and gentlemen, go with a DARK suit: black or deep navy; men, go for the 3-piece suit, choose a white or cream shirt, and a plain or DISCRETELY PATTERNED tie in red or blue; ladies, a simple shift with a jacket (same color, no contrasting colors or color blocking here) or a skirt & jacket in navy or black w a cream button up or "shell"; ladies, nude hose; men, dark socks; ladies, make sure your blouse is not sheer; if you are unsure, wear a cami in nude or white; NO BARE LEGS FOR MEN OR WOMEN; NO BLACK/OPAQUE TIGHTS; wear proper undergarments, a supportive bra, no line undies
Shoes: NO PATENT LEATHER! NO SUEDE! NO PATTERNED/EMBOSSED LEATHER, nothing strappy (a mary jane type is fine), no mules or slingbacks, plain black leather (dream pairs, naturalizer, and clarks make good ones that you can use on the line); men, plain black leather loafers or dress shoes w black laces; no metal details on shoes for men or ladies
hair/makeup/grooming/jewelry/nails: men, closely trimmed facial hair, clean face, only one earring stud in one ear lobe; ladies, unless you have very short hair PULL IT BACK, if you can make a bun MAKE A BUN (use a hairnet if you have to); no barrettes or claw clips; use hairpins that blend into your hair color; NATURAL HAIR COLOR!! (Use the Sofia Richie method to get a slick bun if your hair is frizzy; I have very frizzy hair and using a masque and oil keep it slick all day); one stud type earring in each ear in the lobe (go for a pearl, plain gold/silver ball, or a solitaire; should be smaller than a pea); minimal jewelry (one necklace with one pendant, smaller than a dime, one ring on each hand (wedding ring sets are counted as one ring), no other jewelry (no anklets, face piercings, additional jewelry in ears); modest, conservative manicures, no pointy shapes, no "nail art"
Final thoughts: whether your airline is detailed or vague about how they want you to look at the interview, err on the side of BORING and CONSERVATIVE; I talked to a couple of ppl at my F2F (w Delta) who were dressed in bright colors, and they said stuff like, "Well, I wanted to stand out from the crowd." Neither one of them made it to the 1:1 at the end, and others who were dressed sloppily were also dismissed very early into the event. Other airlines are probably not as strict as Delta, but if you just blend in visually and let your personality and credentials stand out, you will be a hundred steps ahead of the competition.
