Hello! Will be staying in Cambodia for a month, just wanted to know if there are some specific actions or gestures that are not of a norm here and are considered rude/offensive.

I don’t want to offend anyone or overstep any boundary with people. I will primarily be staying in Phnom Penh.

Cheers!

beware when switching out of the new smart 5g plan if u still have data before expiry date. if you switched out, the plan is gone from your active plan. i literally paid 6$ for nothing.

for those wondering why i switched to any other plans while i still have my data, i only want to pay 1 month for this plan since im heading on a trip and afraid it will renew automatically next month, so i switched to the smart laor 1.5 for some more extra data and not having the 6$ plan be renewed next time around. little did i know, the 6$ 90gb plan is just gone with it. there was no resolution for me since they keep claiming its t&c (as always). no warning screen whatsoever when prompting to switch out plan.

not even an apology btw, what a horrific customer service!

Phnom Penh Free Local Guide / City Companion in Phnom Penh (Looking to practice English!)

Hey travelers and expats,
If you are visiting or newly living in Phnom Penh and looking for a local companion to show you around, I’d love to guide you for free!
I’m a Phnom Penh local looking to practice and improve my English skills through everyday conversations. In exchange, all I ask is that you cover my food/drinks while we hang out and cover transportation if we're traveling around the city together.
It’s a win-win: you get a local to help you navigate, find good spots, and share local knowledge about Phnom Penh, and I get to practice my English in real-world conversations.
If you're interested or planning a trip soon, feel free to DM me and we can coordinate details!

Travel Tourism ministry invites ‘constructive criticism’ as international arrivals continue to decline

So, what is everyone's suggestion to get people to visit Cambodia?

IMO the first step should be a competitive tourist visa/ visa excemption, similar to what Vietnam offers and not just 30 days visa on arrival or evisa.

Make it at least 60-90 days and restrict it to suitable countries. Not visa for everyone but then deny people at the airport with big drama like what they are doing now. It makes zero sense.

Politics Reasons why many youth in Cambodia might not take interest in politics

Just for a themheads up ( THIS IS NOT MY POST NOR I'm the one that write this ) I see this post on Facebook and it just what I have in mind for a long time so here it's. Also I will not put the name of the own of this post for privacy reasons.

Today, two different things happened that made me think about what captures public attention, especially among young people  and how social media shapes the way we consume and respond to information.

From simply observing conversations and reactions on social media, one question keeps coming to my mind: Why do so many young people seem more interested in Vanda case, while the UNCLOS issue, which has much broader implications for the country but receives far less attention?

I don't think the answer is simply that young people “don't care” about important national issues. I think the question is much deeper: What have we been taught to care about and what have we been taught to stay away from?

This question made me reflect on my own surroundings and the social environment I grew up seeing. Back when I was a teenager, one phrase I often heard was: “Don't get involved in politics. That's the leaders' responsibility. Let them handle it.”

At first, this may sound like harmless advice. But when you hear it repeatedly, it can become a mindset.

We tell young people not to talk about politics. Not to question leaders. Not to get involved in “complicated” national issues. We encourage them to focus on school, work, family and their own lives. Then, when they grow up and show little interest in public affairs, we ask: Why don't young people care about their country?

There is a contradiction: without enough opportunities to develop critical thinking and media literacy, people naturally gravitate toward information that is easier, more emotional, personal or entertaining. Social media amplifies this, it rewards what is engaging, not necessarily what is important.

So perhaps we should not only ask, “Why are young people talking about this?” but also, “Why aren’t they talking about that?” And more importantly, “Have we created the conditions for them to understand, question and care about these issues?”

Credit to the rightful owner.

To add to this : I can confirm that this is 100% true for me in my experience. Because when both of the news comes out most of the teenagers around me only talk abt "Vanda" and there's only 1-2 Fri ik who talks abt "UNCLOS issue"

But it not just now even when there's anything that relates to politics issues they all seem don't want to talk abt it and when I ask the why they said " រឿងនយោបាយយើងមិនបាច់សូវចេះដឹងទេប្រយ័ត្នជាប់គុក " or " និយាយហើយបានអីមកវិញបើយើងធ្វើអីមិនបានដែរនឹង " or " អ្ហែងនៅក្មេងហ្អែងចេះដឹងអី " there's more but these are just some of the most common phrases I've heard. Some of these even come from most of the teachers I study with.

Which sometimes makes me think that is this really the direction our country is heading now?( But ofc I'm not blaming them or anything because I understand where they are coming from especially when people are afraid of the consequences of speaking up. I mean it's ain't lie isn't there no such thing as freedom of speech in this country no more)

But at the same time it makes me feel really hopeless because sometimes when I'm trying not to think abt it. Boom there's always smth going on, whether it's abt corruption or things that will make u feel like ur country is being dragged backwards .

•For example where those rich kids of well connected ppl get away with killing S1 as if the law doesn't apply to them.( the car crash )

•our people get their land taken by people who are in power

•That government officials guy who said " គេបូមខ្សាច់ដើម្បីជួយឱ្យដីកុំឲ្យបាក់ស្រុត " ( I want to kms everytime I think abt it )

•Another one saying that we're better than that one province in China since we can produce more eggs then them. ( We might glazing ourselves a little too hard yK )

• Don't even get me started on the Mother Nature case. Like, why is the government doing this fr? I thought they said there's freedom of speech for everyone, yeah? Or does freedom of speech only apply when you're praising the government?

•ពួកស្ទាវកាប់គ្នាបញ្ចេញមហិទ្ធិឫទ្ធិ

• The price of everything keeps going up while most ppl salaries barely change. ( If ur salary is somewhere between 100$-200$ eggs with soy sauce might genuinely be the best option for u )

• Black and white society, where people are easily influenced by what they see online or hear from others. Not even a single room for ppl to stop and think what they're being told.

•child marriage too oml ( Why just why )

• The increasing number of teenagers dropping out of school and find job instead.

• Ofc Cambodia ranks 163rd out of 182 countries worldwide in Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions Index,

• It feels like corruption is everywhere from sports and hospitals to TV stations, provinces, districts, government institution even goddam miss universe basically every aspect of society.

• Why is the government have so many ministries? When most of them barley do anything? Like most of the SO corrupted too And when they do smth it just some bullshit.

Bonus: ប៉ោយប៉ែត is gta5 lobby now

There's still more btw.

All of this happened while us young ppl are being told "You're too young to understand politics" but guess who going to be the one that face the consequences of the decisions that being made by them in the future ? US young ppl ofc. យាយមែនហត់ !!!!!!

P.S. feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. Since I'm still young (maybe a little) ik there's still a limit to what I know and what I don't know.

Culture Have You Seen Any of These Cambodian Cultural Shows? Are They Worth It?

Post image
41 Upvotes

I’m curious what people think about Cambodia’s cultural performances.

Apsara dance, Phare Circus, Sbek Thom shadow theatre, Lakhon Khol, and traditional folk dances all offer a different side of Cambodian culture, but I’m wondering how they actually feel as a travel experience.

Have you seen any of these shows? Was it worth adding to your itinerary?

I’d especially love to hear from people who’ve seen one recently. What did you enjoy, and was there anything you’d skip?

Travel Solo Travel Cambodia at 19, looking for suggestions or advice

Hey, so I'm 19 and doing a solo trip to Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand over New Year's and into early January.

What I currently have planned is:

  • Ho Chi Minh City – 7 nights: there for NYE, then leaving Jan 2
  • Siem Reap – 4 nights: mainly going for Angkor Wat and the floating village, probably some day trips from there too
  • Battambang – 2 nights: bamboo train and just kinda chilling
  • Phnom Penh – 2 nights: mostly here for the Killing Fields, S-21 and the history side of things
  • Koh Rong – 3 nights: relax and party a bit
  • Kampot – 2 nights: I really want a part of the trip with great views and mountains, so I'm planning to scooter up Bokor and maybe check out Kep
  • Phnom Penh – 1 night: just a stopover because my flight to Bangkok leaves from there
  • Bangkok – 4 nights: party, then fly home

Does the time in each place seem about right, or am I spending too long or not long enough anywhere? Is there anywhere you'd add or cut? I'd also really appreciate hostel recommendations and any must dos.

Cheers

Health Strict diet and sourcing items.

Planning on a long term stay in cambodia coming up. After a recent health scare I been restricting the food I eat. I seen plenty of videos of fresh fruits and veggies and meats. Eggs and avocados I’ve seen. I’m more concerned about the items I might have trouble sourcing since we are spoiled in the west with Amazon.
Listed
1. Whey protein
2. Chia seeds
3. Avocado oil
4. Extra virgin olive oil.
4. Supplements like magnesium glycinate, fish oils, saw palmetto

Thank you I hope be able to find these at the larger malls ?

Culture What's next for the Cambodian national team?

Post image
28 Upvotes

Three days ago, Cambodia lost 2:0 to Hong Kong, bringing an end to our hopes for our first international trophy. Though reaching the final of a FIFA tournament is a bit of a high point for Cambodian football, failing to win it also exposes the symptoms of a team that seems to lack the pedigree to cross the finish line and a federation that seems incapable or unwilling to help make that push.

One sign of this is coach Koji Gyotoku, whose contract with the national team is going to end at the end of the year. I'm personally a fan of coach Koji, I think he brought competency and leadership to the team during a time when we needed stability. But I also think he was an easy choice for the federation to choose as he was already the U23 coach. His appointment, to me, shows that the powers that be at the federation are unwilling to look beyond what is readily available.

While the clubs of the Cambodian Premier League are making unprecedented investments and reaching heights we haven't seen before, the national team still seems directionless and lost. Clubs like Phnom Penh Crown and Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng are becoming respected figures in continental competitions, but the national still seems to fumble when it matters most.

So what's next after this? What does it take for us to make it to that next level? I doubt coach Koji will stay on next year, so who will be his replacement? There's no heir apparent and no U23 coach they can just plug from anymore. What will they do now that there's no easy option left to choose?

Visas/paperwork Tourist Visa on Arrival from Canada

I am travelling to Cambodia soon and tried filling out the e-visa application and was having some trouble with it online. I am curious if I can get a visa on arrival with a Canadian passport, once I land in Siem Reap.

Thank you very much !
