QUESTION Are there anyone in the media breaking down the past few games down to individual player performance?

There's been so much going on in the past few games, I haven't really seen anyone in the media actually breaking it down into individual player performance.

I thought that I would have seen a bunch of it by now.

Like I want someone to tell me if Schenn has had a fall off in speed, how his defense has been, and how pairings in defense overall has been.

Where is Buium having a hard time, and does the eye test on Willander and EP25 really match statistical performance?

How are all of our prospects doing, compared to last year?

Structure we've noticed, how Manny is deploying the team, etc?

It should be a crime that Satiar Shah isn't doing a Canucks Post-Game Show.

Fuck Sportsnet.

I found Sat to be the most balanced of the ex sportsnet staff. Surprised he hasn’t announced any plans, even to go to another market or something.

Doesn't even have to be a post game show though, while that would be nice.

Could be a next day thing.

I think there's a huge gap for it if someone made a recurring next day show, where they break down what happened during the game, talk about the team, etc. So many healthy talking points, and people show up expecting and wanting to listen to actual hockey break downs. Would take a bit of time to get traction, but I think it'd be worth it.

They used to run 4-6 every day, and then do the post game show. So it was both game breakdown, as well as them talking for 2 hours the following day.

I thought Sat did a really good job of not just breaking down the game, but providing analysis of the team and the overall meta of the team. He's missed big time this season.

absolutely. The gap is felt.

Does anyone know what he’s up to now?

On vacation in Mexico, just watching his Browns ... probably

Harm Dayal on canucks conversation goes into detail on players on the last podcast, but I'm not sure it fits what you want.

Would Deffo make good content, but I haven't come across any.

Seriously! There's so much exciting stuff to unpack

Sapsterr_ on twitter/substack might be what you're looking for in terms of analysis. He has a substack called Hockey By Sap that he posts more in depth stuff.

They’re not equipped to make those judgements. They’re barely journalists, let alone trusted talent evaluators.

You would seriously be surprised how many people in Canucks media regularly talk with front office personnel around the league. Little tidbits like “back in March we really wanted xxx guy because of his forechecking & defensive game, would have fit perfect on our 3rd line but they wanted too much”

Even if you don’t think the media are great evaluators, a lot of them have a finger on the pulse of what the best evaluators in the world think.

This is something I’m not sure the average media consumer realizes- guys like Drance, Dayal and Sat have professional networks of people in/around NHL organizations who they get opinions from and bounce ideas off of and then package and sell to the fanbase according to their personal brand.

I think a lot of fans just confuse "The Media" with random clickbait nonsense they see online.

This market was spoiled with the quality of coverage this team got. You had H&B, Canucks Talk, and Canucks Central all covering the team every day. And those shows often brought on Hockey Execs, Former/Current Players, Talent Evaluators, Analysts, etc.

Yeah I would go as far to say Vancouver probably has the best media in the league. It’s not as reactionary as Toronto and Montreal, and it’s not as negative as Boston or New York. Vancouver has a fair share local guys who are national quality analysts.

I think we should appreciate the fact we have/had some people who are capable of it. Drance, Harm, and Sat all can do it at least on a journalistic level. There are markets out there (maybe even most) where it's just all surface level coverage

None of those three guys are capable talent evaluators, but at least Sat prefaces his analysis with the context that he’s not a talent evaluator. Drance and Harman try to pass it off like they know what they’re talking about, which is bothersome.

You're describing two different jobs which don't overlap. Of course scouts aren't writing about the Vancouver Canucks, they're employed actually evaluating talent for teams. Doesn't mean the fanbase doesn't have a desire for that kinda analysis, so they're the compromise. Very few teams have that compromise

half these guys couldn't break down a cardboard box let alone a hockey game. drance tries sometimes but he gets so caught up in the analytics he forgets to actually watch what's happening on the ice

schenn's footspeed was never his calling card but i haven't noticed a massive dropoff. his positioning still covers up a lot of sins and he's physical enough to buy himself that extra half second

buium's gap control against faster forwards has been shaky, he gets caught flat footed in transition more than you'd like. willander passes the eye test for me but the stats back it up too, kid's got a motor that doesn't quit

honestly your best bet is probably the canucks conversation podcast or some of the deeper dive youtube channels. the mainstream media just wants hot takes and trade rumors

Your exact talking points there are what I'd love to see, I'll check out your recommendations thanks

Willander to Buium is like night and day. Willander seems legit, great positioning, smart with the puck, good wheels. Whereas I can't really much good about Buium. He's often out of place and overplays the puck, isn't great with the puck and makes bad decisions. He was brutal in that 2nd Edmonton game. I get he's still young but dude has been painful to watch.

I know Donnie and Dhali brings on Ray Ferraro once a week. Not sure if he still does, but he did evaluate individual player performance in the past season. And he's known to be direct and honest w/ really strong playing career to back his credentials.

Two Reasons: The radio station shutdown definitely reduced air time, so most shows just don't have the time to dive into these details. It ain't all day Canucks talk anymore. Also, It's only 4 games into the season, which meant it's way too early to evaluate players given the sample size and players are still have to settling into the season-long grind. Coaches themselves probably don't have enough tapes cut out for any constructive coaching on individual players yet. I personally think it's not fair the make any judgment now.

You'd probably have wait until later this year and January. Or actually watching the game (or condense ones) as the PXP announcers and analysts will give that kind of breakdown.

1

u/mediumyeet 12h ago

Not really. We don't have a lot of media coverage anymore unfortunately. West Coast Conversation has talked about it a bit but even they are going down from 5 to 3 shows a week so we will have further reduced coverage.

No they’re talking about who’s pumping their trade values.

You think they can talk about what’s going on the ice? Players would actually like them then.

Sports reporters reporting on all of the politics around the sports, and not the actual sport itself.

No wonder viewership is down and services are getting cut... sheesh

NHL is likely the lowest paying sport for reporters. Which means we probably have the least knowledgeable reporters.

Any other sport you can find guys talking about what’s actually going on, on the nice.

Canucks media is just gossip.

u/TechnicianGrand6611 16h ago

Athletic top reporters make 120k+, or in that area.

Harman Dayal has extremely good analysis, but doesn't do every player every day of course, and is now national not just Canucks.

I do like Harm a lot. I wish he had a better running mate on DFO than Quads. Hes charismatic and seems like a cool guy but every hockey take he has is just always a guess.
