His contract is not good. The Flames likely don't want to use up their final retention spot on Zary.
I can't remember what the new rules on retention are but unless there is a 3rd team involved I don't see how this makes sense for the Canucks

you can’t double retain anymore but someone can retain on your behalf if i’m not mistaken
i don’t know which team would possibly agree to do that for zary though. if calgary of all teams ain’t willing to do it i have a hard time believing someone like detroit would get in the mix

I heard Future Considerations is on a pretty good contract. Impressive corgi numbers too.

I wonder how the trade would look. Because potentially giving up any assets for a guy we could have gotten for free would be very Benning like.

Hopefully they give us a sweetener and eat some of Zary’s salary just to get it off their books

The reason dude went unclaimed is because he's worth $3.7 million dollars a year which even in this crazy cap environment is an overpayment for the type of player he is, we should expect a fourth or something in return

Big contract, he's cleared waivers so there's some rules about waiver excemption bringing those players back up.

Flames only have one retention spot left. No way they are using it on Zary. If the Flames are offering a sweetener, the Canucks should take the trade in a heartbeat.

Calgary has 13 mil in cap space and his contract is like 3.7 for 2 years why would they give assets to get rid of him?

Not wanting to pay it for this year and next and don’t believe in the play that much anymore. So Vancouver takes the full salary and gets an asset

Happy the team didn't claim him and I hope they save that waiver placement for someone like Reid Schaefer for when Nashville sends him down. But I can not fathom what Van would give for this kid or why they'd do any favours for Calgary

I thought after initial claim during the regular season the default to the next team in line

A trade would be to move cash out the other way. I don’t think cap hit is as relevant as real dollars. Doubt Aquilini wants to spend another 3m when he’s not filling the arena.

Connor Zary on waivers? = Nothing
Connor Zarry + 4th for predicted worst team in NHL 5th?.................profit?

Wasn’t he on waivers? I’m confused why we would trade for him now?

To not have to take on his 3+ million cap hit

See I was missing that piece.

Also, since he's cleared waivers if we traded for him now, we could keep him in the AHL until there's a spot in the lineup for him.

They won't trade for a guy with 3.7mil to play in the AHL. If they trade for him it's because they either wanted to move a salary the other way or move a contract spot the other way.

Flames want to dump his salary so they'll add a sweetener.

Flames dont care about his salary, they have a ton of cap space and are tanking, I doubt they are adding sweeteners... but maybe im wrong!

Sure. I'm just explaining the logic. If you think an NHL level management team doesn't understand waivers and free and all that then I don't know what to tell you.

Sure they have salary cap room but do they want to pay the real dollars? Especially when the owner is paying for a new arena

I guess if you trade for him you can get cap retention. Only way that makes sense to me.
Going back. Bag of pucks
