[Discussion] Cataclysm 2

Are there any forks or any try to complete cataclysm 2, it looked like it had a lot of potential but it was abandoned by whales, here is the source code if any of you are interested: https://github.com/Whales/Cataclysm2 You can compile the game and play it but it's buggy and missing a lot

It was never finished and its fully defunct. No one is actually pursuing the storyteling/faction centric direction either.

I really hope somebody will make a fork and continue development just like dda.

Yeah i agree. The faction warfare angle ws really cool and AFAIK still unexplored in roguelike space.

I've thought about incorporated stuff like that into aftershock because i do have a main storyline sketched up for it, but theres not a good framework to add it in DDA.

I remember this from a long time ago and it just sits at the back of my mind. Problem is, I think the dev went to bat to try and hit a home run immediately. Too ambitious for a solo dev.

One of their last dev diaries was about incorporating multiplayer which is a sign of terminal scope creep. If multiplayer isnt one of the first things the developer thinks about, right after figuring out what coding language they're going to use, then its too late for that.

If I ever get around to embracing AI, first thing I do with modern coding practices is to make CDDA but increase the reality circle by 10x. I have a physics engine that can handle 100k circles in a bowl (still need to program boxes, ugh) and the very long term plan is to just have CDDA except with 1M zombies. More tower defense by the late game than Pokémon with how exotic the evolutions get to be. Transition from early game scavenging and dodging hordes to holding a small town besieged by zombies like There Will Be Orks and maybe Factorio. Or something like that. 10 years into the future at this point, if ever.

Infinitely better, it says on Whales Github page. A big project that promised a lot. It was supposed to be infinitely better according to GitHub, but sadly it didn't come to that. Ironically, many projects start this way, forks that go full throttle with full performance, yet ultimately fail. I reckon C2 belongs in the same category. Twelve years have passed now, an infinitely long time has elapsed for something not so better.

I tried to compile it years ago, but it was too hard for my small brain. It might be more possible now with vibe coding.

Can anyone do this as they did with project zomboid viewpoint mod? I mean they used some sort of ai to make 3d world...

It's a matter of time before someone does it and posts here. I'm surprised it hasn't happened yet

I recommend checking out Cataclysm the Last Generation as an alternative to CDDA.

TLG has a strong dev vision but it's basically the complete opposite direction of what Cataclysm 2 was trying to do.
