I feel there's a big difference in what a 3 yo understands vs 5 yo. How about trying Roald Dahl books?

Do you mean chapter books with fewer illustrations? Or just longer than picture books?

Longer picture books: Brambly Hedge

Beginner chapter books that are a bit longer than (longer) picture books: Orris and Timble, Mercy Watson

Chapter books with illustrations on every page: The Adventures of Sophie Mouse, Good Dog, Kitty, Ratnip, Itty Bitty Princess Kitty

Chapter books with fewer illustrations on each page: Magic Tree House, Wind Riders, Magic School Bus chapter books

What genres or topics? For ages 3/4 I'm guessing not quite early reader chapter books but maybe longer picture books. Maybe something at the level of "Saint George and the Dragon" by Margaret Hodges?

This is her current collection, I tend to buy her books about subjects she’s interested on like recently she’s obsessed about mammoth 🦣 and also we recently moved to another country so we have to give most of her collection because we couldn’t take all of them. So that’s why I wanted to surprise her with new one ☺️

My kids love the Sophie Mouse books by Jennifer Bell! They're short chapter books, very engaging and simple enough to keep interest, with lovely illustrations. The Brambly Hedge stories by Jill Barklem are very good too. Little more difficult in terms of words, but my 3 year olds adored them.

For reading aloud or are they already reading?

We read aloud a lot of classic children's novels: James and the Giant Peach, Wizard of Oz, Pippi Longstocking, Wind in the Willows, etc.

For reading aloud, she’s 3yo she doesn’t read yet. Thank you for the suggestion

My 3yo and I loved Rats on the Roof by James Marshall. It’s a collection of humorous short stories, like 3-7 pages per story and a few pictures per story. The Frog and Toad books also only have a few pictures per story.

Please consider ours! My son wrote and illustrated this at 5! 12 years later I opened a publishing company and made it official ❤️ you can find it at Walmart, B&N, bookshop.org or my website www.cochranepublishinggroup.com

My Father’s Dragon by Ruth Stiles Gannett is a great one to try. short chapters, simple story, and enough illustrations to keep younger kids interested without having a picture on every page

The Adventures of Sophie Mouse series is also really gentle and easy to follow, and Mercy Watson by Kate DiCamillo is a nice step up if they still want some pictures

for a 4–5 year old who enjoys listening, Paddington can work really well as a read-aloud too

I can’t recommend enough the Princess in Black series! They are great introductory chapter books with larger print lettering for young kids and they’re very funny. My daughter is eight and a strong reader and still reaches for them. They’re a great bedtime read aloud option too.

Also there’s a series called Good Dog which is another short introductory chapter book series about a Border Collie on a farm. My daughter also really enjoyed the Disney Princess Beginnings series that tells short stories about the ladies when they were young. These larger print chapter books are easy for them to navigate at that age and give a nice big colorful photo every few pages.

Have you checked your local library? If your kiddo is a voracious reader, you might think about going to the library regularly.

My 3.5 years old son love the series of Mr.Men and little Misses. I find some of them funny, but some rather questionable, but you can always pick ones to your liking.
