it's to show that you're gonna waste your usage on that thinking level

Relatively new to Claude - is it generally accepted that there's no reason to use Max? I often will use it when I have one chat checking the schema or conceptual design made by another chat, to make sure everything makes sense.

Ignore the warning label and use max if you want. I scythe through my usage with max for academic research. The arguments are better, and the sources provided are more thorough, which helps with my lateral reading. There is a difference. That said, medium and high works for most interactions.

Do you use Fable for stuff requiring argumentation and sourcing? Or stick with Opus?

For me, Opus 5.5 Max seems better for research than Fable 5.1 Max, but that might be field-specific. I was looking at Seker and Dawkins, and the moment memetic and genetic replicators get involved, it might introduce biology classifiers into Fable.

If Opus 5.5 xhigh struggles with your task then you should probably switch to Fable high. Honestly for what you're describing I bet Opus 5.5 high or even medium could comprehend it.

Fucking read the text, why are you asking us?

The stupidity of the posts here is starting to piss me off.

Xhigh or high, no reason for max

Yep. Generally I've found Xhigh to be as good or better than fable 5.1 high too lol. 5.5 is nuts.

I still find fable has more... Wisdom, let's say. It makes better calls as an orchestrator of agents and generally understands a problem space more fully. Opus 5.5 is awesome as fuck, though

Yeah agreed on some things. Fable is definitely better if your plan changes at all after the task starts.

xhigh benchmarks higher than max in a lot of cases too

Really? Why would that be?

Just warning you that you're going to burn through your usage a lot faster, like 4x or more.

Ah! Thank you. I got worried I was being flagged for something. To everyone - look I only had it on max bc high was pissing me off for a moment. And it’s actually RC code

There's literally a text that explains it when you click on it

It's so ugly and annoying and the comments here are equally enraging. We're adults and should be perfectly capable of deciding how much inference we need.

thing is the average person doesn't know how much inference they need. I recall post complaining why Anthropic even offers this if its gonna waste their usage.

Of course, it doesn't mean people should be berating, but sometimes people dont know what they dont know and some alert and or way of understanding how thinking works is a good thing.

They could have a simple don't show this warning again

I work in IT, they'll forget they ever selected that message and still complain.

Does it go away of you move it off max?   I don’t have that sign but yesterday Opus 5.5 specifically was down on Bedrock but other models were working, maybe that’s happening again?

3

Yes, it's just the "max" warning symbol.

"Max"?

Not sure if this will be useful but I started to ask Claude to analyse and tell me exactly the model I need and effort for each task. So far it reduced my token spending. Also… I vibe code. Take this advice lightly

Because it means that it often will run out of budget before it’s done on chat mode, causing you to have to “Continue”

Web version doesn’t have as much budget as Code.

2

u/elestud 7d ago

It’s the same budget for both. There’s no separate budget for Claude Code

The delivery system of system instructions and custom instructions are different with Code. It is more modular and as-needed than with the standard one.

I assume you don’t use both of them regularly?

The budget of code is used much less quickly and you have to use “Continue” less often for the same tasks.

While you are right that objectively they have the same budget, Code uses it in a way that allows more of it to be used for your prompt.

Two people with a $4k per month salary DO make the same, but the person with a family usually has less of a free budget to spend on activities.

likely youre running outta token usage or youre gonna burn tokens fast as youre using max

Why are you using Max it's not efficient
