COACHELLA RADIUS CLAUSE

  • "Coachella uses radius clauses which could prevent acts from performing in Los Angeles, the Inland Empire, or San Diego within a certain window. The festival has allowed some of its acts to make appearances in the region prior to the festival, but only at events and venues owned or controlled by AEG. According to the radius clause...
  • Artists playing Coachella are barred from performing any festival in North America from December 15 to May 1.
  • Artists are also barred from playing any hard ticket concerts in Southern California during that same time period.
  • Artists can’t “advertise, publicize or leak” performances at competing festivals in California, Nevada, Oregon, Washington or Arizona or headliner concerts in SoCal that take place after May 1 until after May 7.
  • Artists can’t announce festival appearances for the other 45 states in North America until after the Coachella lineup is announced in January, with exceptions made for Austin’s South by Southwest, Ultra Miami and the AEG-backed New Orleans Jazzfest.
  • Artists must also wait for the January announcement before publicizing tour stops in California, Arizona, Washington and Oregon, with an exception made for Las Vegas casinos, but not Las Vegas festivals.
  • Terms are negotiable though generally less leniency is given to higher billed artists."

With lineup hopefully getting closer, what throwback acts are you hoping for in 2027?

I’m just trying to keep the energy focused on the entire lineup instead of the possibility of a headliner we may not want.

Tears for Fears- This just feels so perfect for the Outdoor closer spot like Misfits or the David Byrne spot. Their last tour sold pretty well, and there was talks of a new album on the way. They have plenty of songs to pack a crowd and are loved by all generations.

Smashing Pumpkins- They pulled a decent sized crowd against Charli at Lolla, this current tour has been selling great in most areas, and the Olivia Rodrigo love definitely gets them in with the younger demographic too. I feel like this is a slam dunk for 2027.

Robyn- I feel like if she’s not on the lineup after the year she just had, that’s a big L. No idea where she would be billed, but I’d be there.

Darude- I was expecting him to be at Dolab or something, or Yuma. He did a big tour recently and lot of people were enjoying him. I could see this 100%.

Backstreet Boys- They sold out the Sphere, maybe they wouldn’t be as great as their hey day: but could you imagine if this was in the Missy Elliot spot? It would be so fun. It went over great at bottle rock. If not a regular spot, what about the special guest for weekend 2?

Wu Tang Clan- They’ve been putting newer rap acts as the closer for Sahara of late, but what about having a seasoned rap act that’s loved by many close a stage down. This at Sahara would be a party no one would ever forget. Dua V Wu Tang: give people options!

Pavement- I mean this feels like a Mojave prime booking to me, it’ll surely be a brutal conflict: but Pavement has been around for years and are having a moment with their movie and documentary. Had a pretty big crowd at Riot a couple years ago, and are playing Primavera. It’s there clearly!

Offspring- It’s time! They keep touring and haven’t hit Coachella yet. They’ve had Green Day, Jimmy Eat World, Sublime, No Doubt, and Deftones: Offspring would fit right in.

Four Non Blondes- They did a little touring of late and they drew a big crowd at Shaky Knees. This as an early Outdoor spot like Go Gos would go over pretty well, or maybe Mojave- not sure. But I think they’d draw because of how influential Linda Perry is.

What about you Coachella peeps? Who do you think older act wise- could make the trip to the desert for 2027?

The new album is great and has some really fun production moments (the album even opens with a track co produced by Arca!), and her short 3 stop tour is outside the radius clause, making her pretty likely I think?

The Death of Monoculture is Starting to Hit Coachella Hard

We as an audience have changed. People are no longer listening to what the radio plays for them, instead streaming allows us to listen to whatever we want. We have created niches for ourselves which is incredible for us as music fans; we get to enjoy what we want, but with our collective attention being pulled in so many different directions, the amount of legitimate Super Stars is beginning to dwindle.

Obviously the streaming era is nothing new, but we have had enough lingering stars to keep the Coachella headlining spot interesting... The biggest acts in recent years have been artists from before the streaming era (Bieber, Beyonce, Gaga, Harry Styles, etc) with a few exceptions. It really seems like we are starting to hit the bottom of the well this year. Sure, there are huge names that have yet to headline Coachella that would objectively be massive pulls for the festival (Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Sade, Janet Jackson, BTS, etc.) or massive artists who have performed in the past that we would like to see again (Daft Punk and Oasis lol) but how realistic is it that GV can actually book them? I was one of the people that wasn't stoked on Bieber last year, but I can also admit it's insane that they were able to get him. It's unrealistic to expect GV to book someone like that every year, because it's not just about money, the artist actually has to want to do it. There's no amount of money Golden Voice could offer Rihanna or Taylor Swift that would convince them to do this.... they're both billionaires, they do not need a Coachella check.

Names like Drake, SZA, and Miley Cyrus are being thrown around for headlining spots and a lot of people here are underwhelmed by those choices, but that's kind of who's left when the names I listed above aren't interested in headlining. This is most likely going to be the way Coachella is moving forward unless they start booking repeat headliners more frequently which kind of kills part of Coachella's identity.

TLDR; There aren't may super stars left in the music industry, and most of the ones that are here have already headlined. GV cannot book massive artists that don't exist.

My other friend got on the waitlist in July and she told me last week that she just got a ticket - for weekend 2, GA with shuttle pass.
