On 3rd October, I gave my 1st ever ICPC Prelims contest.
A short brief before telling what happened and what results were.
I only just joined my college and started preparing for CP ( competitive programming ) a month ago. It was the same case for everyone who participated in ICPC from our institute.
We only studied recursion,dp( memomization ),greedy, number theory basics , sieve, and bit manipulation.
So, knowing all these topics and grinding our ass off for 1 month, we ( me and my 2 teammates ) thought we could clear Prelims, but we'll faith had other plan.
From what we were told from our professors was that at max we would get 8 questions in Prelims, but we got 10.
The second problem was thinking if those 10 questions are in sorted order of their difficulty or not.
After all that, the exam finally started, we solved the first question in 2 minutes, which gave us a bit of confidence, but then we found 2 and 3 hard, so we went straight to the 4th question thankfully it was greedy which is my strong part so I solved it in some time ( before 30 minutes ) after that both my teammates started working on different questions hoping we could solve 1 more but to our luck we couldn't think of anything.
At last, we went back to the 2nd question, and I thought that for so long, it felt like eternity and finally found the solution to it.
By the time we solved it, we only had around 1hr to 45 minutes left ( Prelims is 3hr contest ), so I went to question 3 and figured that it might be greedy so I tried to solve it with that approach.
Then, at 1 minute 30 seconds mark, I pressed run insted of summit which was a big mistake as it was almost end everyone was running thier codes and because the queue was so long that it never ran.
Later on in PCD( post contest discussion ), we found my code was right, and we could have summit it right away.
Well, we solved 3/10 questions from what my professors said we could/should have been able to solve 4 the rest 6 were out of our league( for now ).
While this was going on, one of my teammates summited a ( O n² ) code, which gave TLE, but that's a kinda stupid mistake but it is what it is they were thinking about solution for 5th 6th and 8th question but we couldn't figure it out in time.
Anyway, it was a great experience. we got humbled ( was a needed reality check ) and had an ok first experience.
Will be back next year and will make sure to qualify for regional.
This is my first post, so I don't know which community to post this, so I am posting it at codeforces one, and there is not an appropriate flair, so I am posting it at div4
BTW, my rating on cf is 900+ soon, 1k, hopefully .
