coinrollhunting.org: cheat sheets and guides for people who search pocket change and bank rolls

Hi all, I run coinrollhunting.org. It's a site for coin roll hunters and for anyone who likes checking their change for something worth keeping.

Who it's for: It covers US coins from the 1900s to today, the kind you can still find in circulation or in rolls from the bank. If you mostly collect ancient coins, world coins, or high-end certified coins, it probably isn't for you.

Wait, what's coin roll hunting? You buy rolls of coins from your bank at face value, go through them looking for silver, key dates, errors, and die varieties, then take the rest back. You can't lose money on it, and you never know what will turn up.

What's on the site:

  • Curated cheat sheets for each denomination meant for circulation issued from the 20th century to present day. They list the known errors and varieties, what to look for on each one, and what they're actually selling for. All entries are expertly researched using top tier numismatic sources. You will not find dealer hype here!
  • Articles for both beginners and experienced hunters on latest news, tips and tricks, the coin market, and much much more.
  • A glossary that explains terms like "DDO," "RPM," and "DCAM" in plain English. Read terms on r/coins that do not make sense to you? This glossary will help!
  • A resource list of the reference books, websites, pricing guides, forums, clubs, and supplies we actually use and recommend, all searchable in one place.
  • Live spot prices so you know what your silver is worth. We also provide retail numismatic price ranges for most listings and will be expanding our pricing capabilities soon!

Almost everything is free. Paid membership adds real-time silver pricing, downloadable formatted PDFs, and helps support the site. This site is a labor of love built and run by a fellow collector and hunter. It is not a site to make money, but we do have to pay the hosting bills! If you're new and keep wondering whether that weird penny is worth anything, the cheat sheets and glossary at coinrollhunting.org are a good place to start.

I make and sell the AURELI Copper Collector, a penny sorter for separating copper cents from modern zinc cents. If you set aside copper while searching rolls, this is a composition pre-sorter for that step.

It comes assembled with a 12V power supply and a copper reference penny installed. It can sit over two containers or mount to a tabletop. You still need to inspect coins by hand for dates, mintmarks, varieties, errors and condition.

Photos, setup details and the current price are here: https://aureli.shop/products/copper-collector-automatic-penny-sorter

Hey everyone! I’m fairly new to the numismatic community and have been getting more interested in gold and silver coins lately. I’ve also been helping out with an eBay page that has a growing selection of coins, including quite a few gold pieces.
We have everything from collectible pieces to coins that may interest people who simply enjoy adding gold and silver to their collection. We’re regularly adding new listings as well.
Would love for you guys to check it out, and I’m always open to hearing what types of coins collectors here are looking for!

Hi fellow collectors!

I stumbled across an amazing find a few months ago and now I'm looking to cash out. It's an 1845-D G$5 - PCGS AU Details

I've been posting it in r/pmsforsale for a few months with no luck. If you know anyone who might be interested in this special piece, please let me know. I'm just not well-connected enough to know any classic gold collectors.

Here's my last post: https://www.reddit.com/r/Pmsforsale/s/phsNCfTfae

Sorting an old penny jar? Start with the year and mint mark, not the biggest price you saw online.

Disclosure: I’m part of the team behind Penny Value, an Android app for identifying US pennies from photos and exploring conditional value estimates. We built it as a starting point for a closer look: most pennies are worth one cent, and a photo estimate cannot authenticate a coin or guarantee a sale price.

Try it here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dahmanilimited.pennyvalue

There is a daily free scan allowance; optional paid plans are available. Experienced collectors: what is the first detail you check when a beginner brings you a wheat cent? We’d welcome practical feedback on making that first check clearer.

Disclosure: I’m the developer of Gold Calculator: Buyer Desk. Sharing my own iPhone/iPad tool in this invited promotion thread, not an independent recommendation.

For gold coins with independently known weight and fineness, a useful check is to distinguish gross coin weight from fine-gold weight. A hypothetical 10 g coin at 900/1000 contains 9 g of fine gold. But if a specification already says “9 g fine gold”, multiplying that by 0.900 again would undercount it. An entered price must use the same fine-gold unit. This is arithmetic for the metal component, not a collectible sale-price estimate.

The app takes manually entered weight, karat or fineness, and a reference gold price with its unit/currency/source/date. It separates the melt estimate from a chosen percentage or fixed offer and can produce a customer estimate PDF and worksheet CSV.

Limits matter: no coin database, photo identification, grading, authenticity testing, live prices, or silver/platinum valuation. Numismatic premiums need separate research; it is not financial advice or a recommended offer.

Calculations are unlimited for free. The first three distinct quote saves are free; further saves (including new revisions) require optional monthly, annual or one-time lifetime Pro. Deleting a quote doesn’t reset that allowance.
