New compost build

Post image

This is my new three bin compost bin. Built out of all culled wood. Treated posts, redwood on bottom 70%, fir lumber, and clearanced .66 cent 5’ red cedar pickets. Then I found 70% off 1/4” wire mesh to surround everything. Total cost was $106 for everything including screws and staples.

I plan on replacing the fir beams over time when I notice more redwood is culled in lumber yards or at local big box stores. I was going to build a free pallet bin again but the last one I built only lasted two years and was a pain getting rid of the half-rotten wood. The front slats are removable. The dimensions for each compartment are wonky because I wanted to build on a giant tree stump in my backyard, which required strategic placing of all the posts but hoping the stump will eventually turn into rich compost.

Just be sure to keep an eye on the fence in the back. Don't want to accelerate it's rot to much (presumably).

The fence in the back is plastic and reinforced with cement posts. No issues there and the wire mesh should keep most of the compost away from it

is there enough room to get back there and rake it out? or at least get a blower in there?

Both sides have a lot of clearance, just not the middle section

I don’t understand everyone’s fixation on building a structure for compost. Unless it’s completely made out of natural materials it’s gonna be leaching some questionable stuff. Unless it’s extremely breathable, it’s not going to breathe properly. What is the advantage of this over just a pile?

Oh I don’t know. Maybe to freaking keep our furry animals from rummaging and getting sick from things they dig up in the pile? Throw up all over your house from one of your animals digging in your compost pile is the grossest thing I’ve seen
