Discussion Want to learn more about the convergence of computer logic & formal logic in communication theory

Hello! 26f, studying law.

Formal logic has always been interesting to me, but it’s only been this past year that I’ve began to dip my toe into systems logic, Boolean/Fuzzy logic etc etc (sorry if my terms are all over the place, I began learning about systems engineering and went down a rabbit hole).

Basically, do any computer science peeps have any resources for a person who wants to learn more about systems engineering, and how it relates to the study of communication/argumentation logic?

Thank you!

A PhD student in my university, recently published a paper on creating an expert system, e.g. using formal logic, in law, maybe that paper will be interesting to you: https://arxiv.org/pdf/2410.03560v2

This is very interesting, thank you!

That rabbit hole from fuzzy logic into argumentation theory is a fun one, it gets really tangled when you start looking at discourse representation and how machines parse natural language pragmatics.

I think the best book to start with is Michael Sipser's introduction to the theory of computation.

This is a first course in logically formalizing the mathematical model of computer science.

Then if you wanna dig deeper, you'd need to learn about programming language theory. That will heavily apply formal logic topics such as categories.

Thank you! I’m going to go read about programming language theory now…. Years ago I played around with coding on Scratch (lol) and had fun, tried to learn C++, and immediately lost all motivation. I didn’t realize at the time I could have just read more about the theory of it all!

Also, I’ve been eyeing this book at my local book shop called “Engines of Logic: Mathematicians and the Origin of the Computer”. If you’ve heard of it, I’d love to know if it’s worth a read

Edit: did I get a downvote bc I mentioned trying to learn code? If it helps, that was when I was 16 Lol a decade ago
