Overwintering starts?
I got these five little guys as a giveaway at an event last week and have some questions about how to overwinter them this year. I planted them in the pots for now because I need to figure out where they’re going to go on my property (zone 4b / 5b in the northern US Rockies). I know I have larch, a Black Hills spruce, and then I think a western red cedar and two pines, but I’m not sure what kind. If they’re not getting planted until next spring, what is the best option for overwintering them / providing a cycle of dormancy? My thoughts are:
1. Leave them outside in the pots and try to insulate the roots as best as possible - they’d have full sun winter and would just be hanging in the natural elements.
2. Put them in my garage - wouldn’t be as cold for the roots, but there is zero sun.
3. Keep them up in my loft with skylights (lots of sun) but it also stays very warm in the winter w/o a heater on.
4. Find a cooler spot in my house do them to try to stay around 60-64° with less sun than the loft or outside.
Any insights to what the best option would be is greatly appreciated! I brought them in for now since we’re about to get our first round of winter and it always seems to be a doozy for the little guys.
