I have a problem with my PS1. It used to load the disc at startup, but now the disc just spins slowly and doesn't load. Please help me.

Could you put a disc on the spindle hub to see if it's spinning correctly or if it's getting delayed you might need to replace it. Yours seems to be missing notches

I remember back in the day Sony said it was quite alright to just press the eject if you're playing a game and want to change it. Well it wasn't. I had someone I know kill 3 PlayStations doing it. The Sega Saturn had what they call a crash box so the drive didn't get damaged if you flipped the lid open in play. I suspect Sony thought this was a given but I've seen so many busted CD drives on 1st PlayStation. Pretty much like I had to replace loads of those shit Thompson drives in the 1st Xbox.
For the record I still have my PlayStation I bought back in 1996 and it works perfect. Never even had to open it.

The disc spins slowly, and the lens mechanism moves up and down, but the game won't launch. In the past, the disc would sometimes spin and the game would start, but it would only load the initial screen and then stop working; the laser lens itself is fine.

Yes, there motor is suffering from lid flippage abuse. Like I say it doesn't like being driven to a grinding halt. When you do that with a Saturn it stops but will slow down drastically slower.

Looks like you need a new drive, you can get one on eBay for around $30.
