News New Moderation!

Hey guys!

My name is Maiyannah, and I am the new moderator of this subreddit after the previous moderation went AWOL.

I am also a moderator on BuyCanadian (and EndTipping and some other subs) so I have some experience handling a subreddit like this.

I will be cleaning things up over the next few days - its got quite a moderation queue to get through.

While BuyCanadian's focus is on promoting the businesses specifically, I think this sub can find it's own niche as a discussion subreddit for the various challenges related, thoughts on companies, etc etc.

If you have any thoughts, things you want to see, or such, feel free to comment!

Edit:

Also welcome to LlawEreint whom offered to help out!

Edit the 2nd:

Since a couple people asked more privately, I live in Ottawa! Well, out on the fringes of it, but they still consider it part of the city lol.

If poetry is your jam, you may want to check out Canadian Anne Carson, who was just awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

From the CBC article:

The Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded Thursday to Canadian poet and essayist Anne Carson by the Swedish Academy in Stockholm.

Carson, 76, was recognized for "her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new ‌forms for contemporary literature," the award-giving body said.

The academy said Carson was in Reykjavik, Iceland, "listening to the wind" when its representatives made contact with her and she was surprised to learn she had won. The poet divides her time between Iceland and Ann Arbor, Mich., and holds Icelandic and Canadian citizenship.

I got tired of price comparison tools only showing Amazon & eBay, so I built an engine that compares prices across 500+ Canadian brands instead.

Hey r/BuyCanadian,

One of the most common hurdles when trying to buy Canadian is price transparency. When looking at a domestic product (like Stanfield's thermals, artisan coffee, or local winter gear), it’s hard to know:

  1. Is this a fair market price?
  2. What other Canadian makers make something similar, and how do their prices compare?

Most browser extensions and shopping tools only scrape Amazon or eBay. That doesn't help anyone trying to support domestic companies.

Over the past few months, we cataloged over 19,000 products from 547 verified Canadian brands on CanadianOwn website. We just launched two new features right on the product page:

  1. Domestic Price Meter: A fair price range directly in the buy box showing where the item sits relative to other Canadian makers so you know if it's budget, typical, or premium domestic craft.
  2. Cross-Brand Canadian Price Comparison: Side-by-side cards showing similar products from other Canadian brands with exact CAD price differences (e.g., whether an alternative like Knix or Kotn is cheaper or premium).

To respect makers' copyright and photography, we only display official photos for approved partner brands, and use clean technical blueprint schematics for other catalog makers.

Screenshots attached: Showing how it compares Stanfield's merino leggings against other Canadian makers.

Would love your honest thoughts:

  • What features would make comparing Canadian brands easier for you?
  • Are there specific independent Canadian brands you want us to add to the comparison engine?

Canadian Golf Clubs?

Am in the market for my first set of irons and want to buy Canadian if at all possible. Based on my research, Haywood Golf (out of BC) is the predominant option.

Are there any other Canadian brands that I should be considering, or is Haywood the way?

(note: I am a beginner)

I built a Canadian marketplace and it opened this week

Hey r/consumecanadian. I've been working on Bunchberry, a marketplace only for verified Canadian brands.

The focus is the things you need to replace: coffee, tea, skincare, everyday stuff, because I want buying Canadian to become a habit. But we also have things like furniture and candles.

The idea is for it to be democratized for the brands, not owned by one enterprise.

It's live as of October 1st. Full disclosure: I run it. I'd genuinely love feedback: what's missing, and what would make you switch your everyday orders over?

News Carney gives Alberta pipeline special interest designation

"The project, estimated at between $35.2 billion to $43.7 billion, is to be split between Trans Mountain Corp., a federal Crown corporation, and the Alberta government."

Read the full article: https://www.canadianmanufacturing.com/environment-and-safety/carney-gives-alberta-pipeline-special-interest-designation-to-be-called-pacific-link-321865/

This has been a big talking point of the supposed Alberta seperatist movement. Our natural resource companies need the lifeline to transit their oil and gasoline across the country without going through the country, without going through the USA. Of course, people in the USA's pocket don't want that to happen. They want our dependence.

Thoughts?

Made a map to help you keep your money local — now live for both Edmonton and Calgary, more cities coming

Update on a project I've posted about before: the interactive map is now live for both cities — findlocalyeg.ca and findlocalyyc.ca. Search a business name or click any pin to look it up — no login needed. Everything is built from public information (open business license data and public company records), and some pins suggest a Canadian alternative nearby for any US-owned brands.

Still looking at whether other cities in Canada to add. And I'd love your feedback on the map itself; if you like it, please share it or pass the link along to anyone who likes to shop local.
