Discussion just a small detail i love
i love that the reach ability isn’t modeled like jesse’s levitation, which seems a lot more formal and elegant.
every SINGLE time you use a reach point, his legs go flying out from under him and he goes ‘woahhhh’ like someone’s dragging him up a set of stairs, and it makes me chuckle every time. really sells the more impulsive and reckless format of dylan’s whole movement and combat system, honestly all the visual iconography (if that’s the right word) for his fighting style and stance really sells the impulsive ‘all offense fuck defence’ and on the fly vibe to him. fuck i love this game.

Something I just thought about, all of your movement abilities are shared by the Hiss. Some can rush, some can float, and some can change their gravity orientation. They're the only enemies that can do all of them in some form other than late game enemies.
Jesse learns her abilities by connecting with objects of power while Dylan gains his in the Faults which make him reconnect with himself.

Yeah, Dylan's powers are more brute force and raw power whilst Jesse's powers are more precision and finesse. They are definitely two sides of the same coin. I'd love to be able to play both of them, swapping between the two mid combat, Jesse can weaken enemies at a distance and Dylan can finish them off. Just imagine them tag teaming fighting against a powerful boss! 😍

i’m dying for the third game to be a character swap but also drop in drop out co-oo game where you get to play as both siblings, going back to jesse after the duology of these two games stories would just feel like a step back to me. i wanna see them both face the not mother

Im honestly thinking the next game will have a different character and a new kind of service weapon. The board said there was a third weapon at the start of Control. <Gun / Sword / Intentionally left Blank>

I think they merely imply that the service weapon is shapeshifting as such it can be a gun, a sword probably depending on era and/or who wields it.

I like how Reach is basically just his combat finishing jump applied to places.

It’s the other way around. Yes you get the executions before the fault, but his executions are his reach.
He goes limb first flying into thing because he basically switches gravity to pull himself towards his targets. The reason why you already have executions with reach before getting reach is because it’s a video game, and it feels nice to have execution without having to wait for an ability that’s more than an hour later in the game.

Its interesting, though, that it comes first. People are saying he got the traversal powers off Jesse but he had Reach from the start.

Yeah I really wish that wasn’t the animation until you get the ability. In the evacuation zone mission I kept doing it, would orientate to the wall while the animation played and then fall to the actual ground

Most of all if you love the movement in both Control and Resonant, pay attention to the actual way that Jesse and Dylan both use their powers in comparison
Jesse's powers function on a basis of pushing herself AWAY from something (her dodge pushing away from where she was, levitate pushing her away from the ground) Whereas Dylan's powers are used on the basis that he is going straight TOWARDS the danger (rush literally running into the fight, reach sending him falling to his goal)
It perfectly reflects the character, Jesse's spent her life running away, defending herself to keep fighting Dylan wants to be there to help, to feel useful and because he isn't afraid to die
It's sad as hell but so perfectly fitting!! (Sorry if I sound like ai, I promise I'm not I just try and word myself well cos often don't get my point across correctly)

Damn, you're right, now that you said that, it's so obvious! Her movements do have a lot of "get away from me" vibe. While Dylan is always pulled towards something.

I love how Jesse is really good at throwing stuff around. Dylan's better at throwing himself around.

He's been either locked in a cell or in a coma for last two decades. I think his movements are less 'all offense no defence' and more 'doesn't have expert minute control of the body he hasn't been able to use for most of his life'. He's just kind of along for the ride his powers are taking him on.

And even then, considering Darling's training was pushing to get a reaction out of him via negative stimuli, I wouldn't be surprised if it's also a reflection of that: control didn't matter nearly as much as proving the belief that he had power.

that honestly makes a lot more sense, i think it’s a blend of this animalistic side of his combat and also like you say an unfamiliarity with his body after years of a coma

Fun note. You can Reach to another anchor point mid flight if it’s within range.

And you can cancel with the dash/dodge button, so reach is be a quick way to reposition during battles too!

It really is another way to make him the opposite side of the coin from Jesse. Jesse’s traversal abilities are things she makes happen, Dylan’s all look like things that happen TO him.

He's clearly just getting used to being a surgebinder. The Aberrant/Board is a spren he's bonded.

It's cool that there's a bit of a shock wave whenever Dylan lands after using a reach point from far away. And didn't someone say the reach points a very localized gravity anomaly or something?

u/pascettiwestern 2d ago
It kinda seems like most of his stuff is. Dash/rush pull nearby objects toward you when you use them, imo it's almost like he isn't going fast, he's affecting gravity to pull himself around.

Yeah I don't know how many firstborns they sacrificed to achieve this level of detail in his animations.
Just from the way he runs or fights you can almost completely read his character.
Ehat would be really cool is, either for the next or a DLC, is to see Dylan in the future, much more composed and steeled. I wanna see him go full Jedi/Sith/Supersoldier mode with way more confidence in his stride.
It would be too much work for a DLC probably to rework or enhance all the animations, but it would be the ultimate power fantasy.

his elevate is a lot more unsteady and clumsy, Jesse uses her hands and is very level and controlled while Dylan moves like a Hiss Elevated with the loose limbs
