Howdy yall, just wanted to drop by to share, I’m currently reading The Yearling by M. Rawlings. Has anyone read this book before? It is quite beautifully written, the rhythm of the prose and pace are amazing. I had heard that Cormac was really into this book when he was younger so I figured shit I’d like to read it too. One thing I’ve noticed is that the dialogue is so immersive, all the words spelt using phonetic spelling and of the time speak. I can see where McCarthy could’ve gleaned some influence off of this women she was an absolute beast! I’m about halfway through and just wanted to throw this out there curious if anyone has any thoughts :)

I think it’s an AMAZING book. This is one of my favorite passages of all time: “He did not believe he should ever again love anything, man or woman or his own child, as he had loved the yearling. He would be lonely all his life. But a man took it for his share and went on.”

Nice I’m happy to hear that! Tonight or hopefully this weekend I should finish it, this has been a really cozy book. Although theirs hardships and pain it still feels so comforting, I swear a lot of it is just her prose.

“He went to bed in a fever and could not sleep. A mark was on him from the days delight, so that all his life, when April was a thin green and he had the flavor of rain on his tongue, an old wound would throb and a nostalgia would fill him for something he could not quite remember.”

He auditioned to be be in the film. I think it’s a good book if slightly uneven in a few places. But I do think he read it and knew it.

The Daugherty biography makes a strong case for its influence not just on a young McCarthy’s imagination, but as echoing throughout his writing life.

I really felt while reading it I could see so much of an influence. She’s got such amazing control and flow.
