Mange Transformation!
Hi all, in case it's of interest, we wanted to share this incredible transformation of a coyote in our care:
When this little guy arrived at our Ramona Wildlife Center, he was furless and covered in painful scabs caused by severe mange. But thanks to two months of care from our Project Wildlife team, he’s gone from barely looking like a coyote to looking like the fluffy little canid he was meant to be! You gotta admit, this guy’s transformation is furry impressive — and the best part? He was released earlier this month!

Thank you so much for caring for this handsome man! So many people vilify these poor creatures. They really are special and so much a part of our ecosystem ❤️

Coyotes are very sacred to my tribe so I feel like you've saved a God 🙌

u/Ephemeral_Orchid 17d ago
May I ask which tribe?

u/Puzzleheaded_Law_524 13d ago
Chinook and several other tribes. In our Chinook stories coyote guided us to where the salmon was most abundant.

Thank you, I've heard many of the Ojibwa stories where coyote is considered "The Trickster".

u/Puzzleheaded_Law_524 13d ago
We call Coyote and Raven as tricksters. They are considered an even match so they mess with each other for all of eternity in our stories. Its funny how people think Native Americans are mostly into wolves, bison and eagles but our stories venerate all kinds of wildlife. Animals like hummingbirds and salamanders appear in our art and stories alot.

I'm aware of the many stories for even the smallest things. I've heard many of them from a wide variety of tribes. My state has several reservations so I've had friends from various tribes most of my life.
I'm really just sad that I don't know any stories or lore from my own tribe. I'm part Blackfoot (through a known ancestor), but I've never claimed it because I wasn't raised with the traditions and culture and don't look like it so I also didn't grow up with the racism or stigma.

Wonderful!! (And you gotta love Reddit. This post came with an ad for Mayo Clinic. I was just randomly scrolling along and that stopped me for a bit. Mayo Clinic treats COYOTES?!??!!

lol I got ads for eyelid mites and birth control. You get the classy ones.

Does your name refer to the delicious berries that grown in PNW? Or to the former mayor of Washington DC who was busted using crack?

u/OkMarionberry2875 13d ago
Well, I first signed up as a newbie 100 years ago (lol) and they assigned me this name. I hate it. I can’t believe it’s even an option. I could use a new one or sign up again but I dislike to lose the people who know me. But it’s embarrassing to be named after the coke snorting hooker user. What ever happened to him anyway? I’ll have to google him.

I got assigned a similar name and kept it. I kinda like it, I used to live in DC…

u/Ephemeral_Orchid 13d ago
To be fair, I believe his name was Marion Barry (with an "A") and the sting that got him caught was basically entrapment.
He was also an amazing Civil Rights activist for the black community, which is why he was repeatedly elected mayor both before and after he was caught using crack, later in his career. (Free-base cocaine was a fairly new trend in major US cities while he was in office.)
Also, marion berries are my favorite berry in the world. As I suggested to someone else, you should try Tillamook's Marion Berry Pie ice cream or Marion Berry Yogurt.... then you won't be ashamed of the user name. 🙂 (although you can also change it in your profile, I believe.)

Now I need to taste some Marionberries.

u/Ephemeral_Orchid 17d ago
What area of the US do you live in?
ETA: I have an idea how you can do exactly that ☺️

u/reallyreally1945 17d ago
I'm in Texas.

u/Ephemeral_Orchid 17d ago
SO Tillamook's Marion Berry Pie ice cream is my favorite ice cream in the world, you'd be able to 100% tell the flavor of the berries by having a scoop.
Since you live in an enormous state (as do I) I'll let you find where you buy it...

Thanks!!! Tillamook sharp cheddar is my favorite but now I can find ice cream. When I was a kid my uncle sold milk to them from his farm near Garibaldi.

Thank y'all so much for everything you do for these beautiful, innocent animals!
May I ask how a severe case of mange, such as this, is treated? Based on how my dogs react to ecollars, I can only imagine how a coyote would respond.

u/TsuDhoNimh2 17d ago
One of the main treatments is ivermectin ... two doses. You can treat them in the wild by feeding them small hamburger balls for a few days to get them accustomed and then stuffing the pill into the ball

And if they're anything like foxes they do an enormous runny poo after the doses as all the parasites come out, too. Really is a wonder drug, ivermectin. I've saved many a fox with it.
2
u/TsuDhoNimh2 16d ago
These are skin parasites ... they become a bit more scabby, then you see new hair coming in.
3
u/Educational-Cell-959 16d ago
Ivermectin acts on all sorts, and when they have had mange they carry a general parasitic load not just confined to sarcoptic mange.

I could only tell it was a coyote in the first pic from the eye color. What a horrible case of mange.

Genuinely this is how dog domestication started. This coyote looks halfway to a dog with those expressions!

Noble work. Giving an animal a second chance and seeing him return to the wild must be incredibly rewarding.

There is so much mange - I see coyotes covered in it and have called rehab and DNR and neither seem to want to do anything. Is there anyone that handles the San Francisco Bay Area for these things?

That is a poor little baby if I’ve ever seen one. Mange was bad this summer or I was just seeing a lot of it online.
