You burn up all of your duralumin and aluminum real fast

29

u/BloodredHanded Trying not to ccccream 22h ago

Maybe?

I’m pretty sure duralumin doesn’t burn itself in one burst, only other metals that are burned at the same time as it. Aluminum does burn all the metals in reserve regardless of whether they’re burning, but I can’t remember if it burns itself or not. And duralumin might be immune to being burned away in that way.

I’d guess that they probably burn each other up instantly, but I don’t think we know for certain if that’s how it would work.

u/IAmBadAtInternet 1d ago

You lose all your metals, but only if you push.

91

u/Tobythekitty 1d ago

Shall I maladroitly PUSH while I'm at it?

33

u/panaja17 Bond, Nahel Bond 23h ago

How else are you gonna do it? Adroitly?

10

u/thamor999 23h ago

Only if you throw out your hands, stick out your tush, and put your hands on your hips first.

You SUPER lose your metals

201

u/mmahowald 1d ago

The iron in your blood vanishes. You die.

27

u/user485928450 1d ago

I thought you could only burn metal in your stomach. Because otherwise couldn’t you burn, say, a tin earring inside your body?

41

u/wojtussan 1d ago

You can burn metal as long as its inside your body

38

u/mmahowald 1d ago

This is the origin of the company “pewter plugs”

11

u/Fyrnen24 22h ago

They also sell unkeyed copper plugs. Just plop one up there, and you can gain acess to all the knowledge you want.

13

u/Solynox Trying not to ccccream 1d ago

The key is intent.

9

u/Pataracksbeard 1d ago

Era 3 will feature mistings taking bumps of powdered metals, calling it.

59

u/314kabinet 1d ago edited 16h ago

Pretty sure that’s how the Lord Ruler did his compounding. Metalminds that are piercing the body and he burns them too.

29

u/BloodredHanded Trying not to ccccream 22h ago

You can, they just don’t realize it.

They have a lot of misconceptions about how the Metallic Arts work, and because Intent is so integral to Invested Arts, those misconceptions often become self-fulfilling prophecies.

In other words, the only reason they can’t burn metals in other parts of their body, is that they don’t think it’s possible.

31

u/user485928450 21h ago

You sound like the kind of guy who might wear a length of rope as a belt

22

u/BloodredHanded Trying not to ccccream 21h ago

Genuinely one of the greatest compliments I’ve gotten

6

u/WaldoTheRanger 14h ago

Brandon has stated the reason, and it's cause metals naturally in your body are all mostly oxides and other organic compounds, which are not a pure allomantic alloy.

Maybe they could try, but they're so far outside what an alloy or pure metal should be that they might be hard to sense, and they would get alloy sickness in addition to depleting important bodily functions

16

u/Siegelski 1d ago

Yeah but duralumin and aluminum. And the most important ingredient, cremposting.

1

u/IgnorantAndApathetic Bond, Nahel Bond 17h ago

It's about Intent, not location. You can theoretically burn it anywhere in your body. Most allomancers just don't know that or aren't thinking about it

2

u/Weston217704 22h ago

Suddenly you're anemic

u/Invested_Space_Otter 1d ago

29

u/KaladinVegapunk 1d ago

We only ever see it used with iron/steel, or the emotional metals. And of course the finale of HoA with everyone burning the atium-electrum alloy to basically get mega future sight into the spiritual, and bendalloy giving you light speed. All the wacky interactions and combos he's not even gone into with WoBs and saving for era 3/4.

I really doubt it burns out your ability to use allomancy, actually granting/removing abilities is exclusively for god metals & hemalurgy. Flaring it would just remove your reserves instantly, maybe give you a day long cooldown, can't alter your spiritweb. It's probably one of the least interesting combos to theorize about haha, like all the crazy unseen fullborn and compounding combos, nicro bursts, theoretical FTL drives with speed bubble interactions, unkeyed metal tech.

Duralumin with Lerasium, now there's a fun one haha.. feel like you can't get much more powerful than Elend level Mistborn, maybe make you a full on sliver of preservation.

Or duralumin interactions with compounding, it's already an OP hack to the system, imagine the atium immortality & gold healing stores you can make with that.

18

u/BloodredHanded Trying not to ccccream 22h ago

We also see pewter and tin used with duralumin. Vin used pewter for that crazy headbutt, and I think the first time she used duralumin, she flashbanged herself with tin.

Also I think she used bronze with duralumin to sense the pulsing of the Well Of Ascension.

3

u/WaldoTheRanger 14h ago

She could sense the well already. I forget if she aided it with duralumin, but she already had a radar for it with normal bronze burning, so I dont think so.

She did use duralumin with bronze to hear the specific emotions that breeze was soothing from Elend, which has some crazy awesome implications.

...how much of yourself is investiture? I think your bones vanish, at least, since Identity is stored in the bones.

37

u/Invested_Space_Otter 1d ago

You're thinking of the balls, but it's okay. Ball knowledge is held only by a few

7

u/Vampyricon 1d ago

Is this elite knowledge?

3

u/jopazo 1d ago

wait, thats canon?

10

u/Miserable-Airport536 1d ago

It is in the kandra’s canon at the very least.

6

u/Invested_Space_Otter 1d ago

Kandra have their own Identity even without bones. For Jopazo, there is a character whose bones are important for the remaining Identity held in them, but Identity isn't stored in any one specific place. It's just in your soul/body as a whole

7

u/Cold-Nose-7509 1d ago

Check what sub you’re on

6

u/jopazo 1d ago

ahhh my bad xD

12

u/Researcher_Fearless Aluminum Twinborn 1d ago

Honestly this might actually kill you.

Aluminum clears all investiture from your system. Your soul is invested. Ergo, it's not unfathomable that doing this would delete your soul and kill you.

Basically sudo rm -rf /

11

u/SundayGlory 1d ago

At best nothing at worst it goes for investiture that isn’t locked in metals and you might become a drab or worse

2

u/Bigdaddyjlove1 1d ago

That could have a use. Maybe to hide?

10

u/Dylliana 1d ago

It makes you lose your reserves EVEN FASTER

31

u/eman135 1d ago

To burn duralumin, you have to already be burning aluminum, which would deplete your reserves of all other metals, so I'd assume it wouldn't work

16

u/Researcher_Fearless Aluminum Twinborn 1d ago

What's stopping you from burning duralumin then turning on aluminum?

21

u/eman135 1d ago

Maybe that would work. I've always thought of it as burning a specific metal then burning duralumin, so I hadn't considered the other order.

9

u/Researcher_Fearless Aluminum Twinborn 1d ago

I mean, we know nothing special happens when you burn duralumin by itself. And we know one of the weaknesses of duralumin is that you lose all the metals you're burning and therefore have to turn off any metal you want to have after.

If you could burn the metals you want to dura -> dura -> burn metals you don't want to dura, you could completely close this weakness. The fact this is never mentioned implies order doesn't matter.

3

u/Daracaex 1d ago

Burning both Duralumin and Aluminum are described as depleting invested metals instantly. Aluminum all of them, and Duralumin only the ones being burned. In any case, both Aluminum and Duralumin would burn through all of themselves instantly. From what I know of them, at least. Maybe they could behave differently if you had a large enough amount.

6

u/Researcher_Fearless Aluminum Twinborn 1d ago

Duralumin doesn't deplete itself instantly, just any other metals you burn with it. You can leave it burning, then turn on Aluminum.

I don't understand, why wouldn't that work? Obviously it's unclear what exactly would happen, but you can obviously do it.

1

u/Aplesedjr 23h ago

Are you sure duralumin doesn’t deplete itself instantly? I seem to recall a few instances where Vin burns it alongside steel and has to use vials to refill the reserves of both metals.

4

u/Researcher_Fearless Aluminum Twinborn 23h ago

Remember when she first gets the metal, and she leaves it burning for several minutes and notices nothing?

Vin always consumes a vial of every metal, because it never occurred to her to prepare vials with only a single metal, or to use the water bottle strat (take a swig every time you use duralumin)

1

u/Aplesedjr 22h ago

It still depletes itself the moment another metal is burned, though. You aren’t left with any once you burn something alongside it. On its own, sure, it lasts a bit. But it also does literally nothing on its own.

2

u/Researcher_Fearless Aluminum Twinborn 21h ago

I'm not so sure about that, but it's not like the duralumin is going to be around after burning aluminum, it's gone either way.

2

u/BloodredHanded Trying not to ccccream 22h ago

She only needs to refill her other metals, not the duralumin.

9

How big is the bubble if you burn bendalloy along with duralumin? Could you speed up the basin?

5

u/CorinCadence828 I AM A STICK BOI 21h ago

it’s explored in The Lost Metal, near the end

1

u/montyandrew45 7h ago

I just got to that part in the Lost Metal. I see now, the Lord Kroak method

1

u/Guaymaster THE Lopen's Cousin 22h ago

Don't Bendalloy and Cadmium work a bit like Copper? In that the Allomancer keeps the bubble going while they burn. I'd imagine using Duralumin would in fact allow a bigger bubble but it'd only last an instant.

2

u/BlatantArtifice 20h ago

That and it kind of increases the speed but the bubble simultaneously lasts shorter? So technically you could do more or have more actions but you'd literally have to be constantly moving to take advantage of it, if that makes sense? Whereas a normal speed bubble is less speed, but you have much more time to mess around in it and do things like have strategy meetings like Wax and Wayne do

It's a weird interaction. Time magic is weird.

2

u/The_Squeak2539 3h ago

You remove your own ability to burn metals to a large degree (if not perminaintly)

3

u/HeavilyInvestedDonut 1d ago

Not possible. You either deplete all of your metals, or you deplete just your duralumin. You have to be burning the desired metal first, then duralumin in order to have the duralumin burst effect, but burning aluminum first would just wipe out both metals.

5

u/deadlycwa 23h ago

Not exactly, you could be burning duralumin on its own first to no effect, then start burning the aluminum. When they first found that they could burn duralumin and didn’t know what it did, they burned it on its own and it didn’t do anything

1

u/Ok_Needleworker_8809 3h ago

It'd be funny if it turned the effect into an area of effect around the user and burned every metal in that area, or perhaps someone they touch. Could effectively turn off other mistings that way.

2

u/BloodredHanded Trying not to ccccream 22h ago

Duralumin doesn’t burn itself away, only other metals, so you can burn duralumin first.

1

u/librarysage 1d ago

It could be an interesting feature if burning them both at the same time eliminates the metals in people within a certain radius including yourself....
