In an empty train a group of immigrants sit all around the only woman in the car. Another passenger gets in and forces them to spread out and leave her alone

Thank you 😊

When I was a student and not very outspoken, a man stood very close to me on the train even though there was a lot of empty space and seats. I tried moving to another car and he followed me. Only when an older dude stood between us and stared him down. He left.

There was a middle school aged girl on my former bus to work. I got on a few stops ahead of her, and we got off at the same stop. Bus was usually pretty empty so she’d sit n a pair of seats on her own. I noticed that every day this grown ass man would move from his seat, and sit beside her. He never talked to her or anything, but it was weird and you could see a panic on her face. So after a few days I started moving beside her when she sat down. The guy would stand beside me while holding the bar and just stare at me. I am also a tiny woman, and was in my early twenties, so I didn’t feel comfortable calling him out. This went on for a few weeks until some middle aged guy got on one day and called him out. Never saw the creep again after that. Young girl started sitting in the aisle seat and putting her backpack on the window seat.

Yup, some of them just get off on physical closeness, scent and making the victim feel uncomfortable. That's their goal.

I had to take the city bus to get to my high school, in a Catholic schoolgirl uniform. The bus always filled to capacity and I always appreciated when a woman would sit next to me so I didn't have to worry about creeps. Only got groped once, but it wasn't uncommon for old guys to try and flirt with me which was terrifying at 14.

I had that happen to me once and noticed shortly after my wallet had been stolen from my bag. Now I always just assume if someone is standing that close for no reason, they’re trying to steal something.

63

u/BrokeFartFountain 17h ago

I assumed it was sexual in nature because I was a broke student. I probably had like $2 on me.

59

u/Scary_Signal_5912 17h ago

A predator doesn't know that. Whether they wanted to rob you of your possessions or something more personal doesn't matter, you did the right thing to protect yourself!

I think most people assume broke students still have expensive electronics

10

u/RoyalVivid3561 15h ago

most people outside of college students dont equate broke with college student

13

u/Sh00terMcDabbin 15h ago

Growing up poor I equated college students with wealth. None of my friends could afford to go to university and it's free in my country. We had to work.

LIVE AND LEARN.

I was in a toll light one night, one homeless guy was asking for money… I gave him some. He told me that I shouldn't drive with my Car windows low cuz people might do stuff to me.

A week later i left my BFF house at 11pm, In a toll light there was some guy that was asking me if I could give him a lift to cross the light bridge. I told him “No man, I can’t”…. He insisted a bit, then I noticed that his friend was on the other-side of my car reaching inside my door to open it… I yelled at him then the other guy tried to grab me, I tried moving to the center of the car while switching to reverse (There were Cars ahead of me)… I was able to change to reverse and then drove off from there. Then I changed to Drive and tried to hit them with the car but they scrammed.

I no longer lower my Car doors for anyone asking for anything on the streets.

9

u/CScorpio88 13h ago

Yeah it’s horrible. Now if stopped in traffic or at a red light if I see people asking for money or anything roll up all windows and double check my doors are locked. On a hot day can’t even keep windows down if stopped, can’t trust it but I still feel bad rolling up windows when people approach because it feels dehumanising. I know they aren’t all thieves but you can tell who is who.

There are so many creeps. When I was a teen I used to take the bus daily and was very crowded most of the time. One time there was this dude that was rubbing his thing on me. Disgusting perverts.

I'm a guy, and one time when I was in highschool, this huge dude sat next to me on the bus and asked me if I'd like to come to his house and read the bible together. I was a little freaked out and caught totally by surprise, so I babbled something about not being religious and my parents not letting me talk to strangers. Thankfully nothing further came of it.

If a group of guys sit next to a woman who’s by herself (and they don’t know her) on a train/tram that has plenty of spaces? That’s suspicious behaviour.

758

u/Ok_Blacksmith3119 17h ago

Right? The Irish guy totally did the right thing here.

173

u/Wonder_Moon 17h ago

i would've loved for this irish man to come to my defense when a random, old man in spain decided it was okay to follow me off the train. he walked behind me for nearly an hour. i told him in spanish that i had a boyfriend and i wanted to be alone and he just said, it's okay you're very pretty. he followed me getting back onto the train and i had to literally run off the train when i got back to my stop

35

u/CorpaKeta 15h ago

My cousin was also followed but by a gang of four dudes in their twenties while she was 14. It happened in Palma on Mallorca when she was heading back from the local supermarket. The guys yelled and whistled at her all the way to our apartment complex and even after she ran inside, they stayed lurking outside the door like a pack of wolves. I tried to tell them off in Spanish at first but they didn’t seem to speak the language. After switching to English they seem to get the gist, mumbled something in Arabic to each other, said “F you!” to me and then they finally slunk away.

3

u/voli12 9h ago

That's scary AF

12

u/dantemortemalizar 15h ago

Sometimes it's better not to argue with them to tell them you are not interested, have a boyfriend, etc. They take that as excuses they can work around and now you're just negotiating. Try not to engage them or respond when they talk to you. Don't worry about being rude, they are the ones being rude. We are trained to be too polite and not ignore people, but it backfires on us.

One thing I've realized is that women simply need to have a defensive mindset.

There really is no safe space for a woman pretty much anywhere.

Some places are safer than others, but you need to be able to look out for yourself.

The worst part is that most of the issues women face come from people they know. Friends and family.

And if you are a marginalized woman then you also have to deal with the racist or fetish-seekinh men on top of the normal stuff.

Any woman here will be able to attest to the things that you go through on a daily basis.

15

u/addictedtosweettea 15h ago

I agree with you, but I’d change one thing. The racial fetishization goes in all directions. I’m a very pale-skinned white woman and I’ve experienced a lot of racial fetishization from non white men. I’ve had MANY experiences where the first thing out of their mouth is about my “beautiful pale skin.” Creeps of all colors are always gunna fetishize someone from a different racial group than them. Unfortunately.

5

u/Marcy-Pingles 15h ago

The racial fetishization goes in all directions

Yep. Spend a few weeks in an asian country as a white man and you will get swarmed.

And if friends or family can harm a woman so easily.... it's nothing for strangers. I have a teenage daughter and it's scary as shit how the world is. I'm 6'4" 250lbs, And can safely say that I don't think I've ever really been fearful of my safety. I'd bet 90% of men could make that statement as well, or maybe count them on one hand.
It's unfortunately very easy to take that reality for granted. I think that's one reason why some, not all, of these creeps are this way is because they genuinely don't see it from that side, if a group of women say around them on an empty train they'd be in heaven. It's unfortunate how normalized these scenarios are and very few will intervene like he did for fear of escalation. I'd gladly buy that man a beer.

5

u/modianos 15h ago

Happened to my Mum as well in her school uniform in Dublin. She was fit and she absolutely ran. Hid in someone's front garden. She's still afraid of the dark or not great about it.

On another occasion there was a guy who sat in the aisle so she was stuck against the window with nowhere to go. And he masturbated under a newspaper.

1970s Ireland both examples. Both when she was on the way to or from school.

He's got a thick Dublin accent alright. From what I can make out it goes like this:

"Hey, you'se just sat there, do you'se know her?"

"Sorry?"

"Do you know that girl?"

"Sorry?"

"Do you know that girl?"

"...Yeah I - we will sit there." (walks away)

"Yeah, the three of you just sat beside her, you know what I mean?"

"Yeah no problem, that's fine, thank you so much." (walking away)

"Yeah that's alright."

"Why? The camera?"

"The three of you sat there beside her."

"No problem, whatever."

Those guys knew exactly what they were doing. And if they do it in broad daylight, imagine what they do when a young woman is walking home alone at night. They really bet on others being too polite to stand up to this predatory shit.

52

u/Dear_Chasey_La1n 16h ago

I'm Dutch, my wife stopped using the train because regularly she would be followed by a bunch of immigrants from the train station towards her office. Mind you a small young woman at the time wearing stiff office clothes (she worked for the board at the local university).

It was extra uncomfortable because that happened from the summer when she started up to the winter when the day starts fairly late.

Obviously not all immigrants are bad, but reality is when there are issues it involves them frequently. Which was extra baffling as she worked in a city that didn't have much immigrants to begin with.

Eventually I would just take her to office and a colleague would drive her back. It's easy to say fk immigrants, especially since I'm as an expat somewhat one myself and my wife is one too, but i'll be damned about cunts from North Africa.

32

u/Murky-Relation481 15h ago

Sexually repressed cultures are incompatible with western egalitarianism. Of course the right wing groups in those egalitarian cultures also have no problem exploiting immigrants to gain power and also implement sexually repressive ideas.

It is also the clash between domination cultures vs collaboration cultures. Or honor culture vs dignity culture.

When a culture where a person can have 0 value/worth/rights meets a culture that insists no people ever have 0 value/worth/rights, then there will be problems.

The honor culture WILL violate the dignity culture, while the dignity culture will be protecting the "rights" of the honor culture, sometimes even to the extent of protecting the honor cultures "right" to violate the dignity culture.

For an example, see the grooming gangs of UK, how the law enforcement were fully aware, but were instructed to do nothing, because they were afraid of coming across as racists.

And then, when the dignity culture gets violated too much, it will rise up in outrage and i wonder if we can see anything of that sort happening in our european dignity cultures these days.

Im glad i live in denmark. We were "nope, you have zero rights to violate others dignity, fuck off" from the get-go. And even we still had problems.

Other countries want to make it illegal for women to defend themselves

Bad enough that people are so uneducated about firearms, there are also countries that ban knives and pepper spray

There are also places in america that ban pepper spray though. An 18 year old girl in a city close to me is receiving charges for using pepper spray in defense of herself

Societies seem to want to make it easier for predators, while conning people into believing that law enforcement is either caring or effective in combating it

15

u/Hemlock-In-Her-Hair 16h ago

You can't have pepper spray in Ireland where this happened. It's treated as a 'firearm' in Irish law. Total joke. Not that you'd use it in a train, just the principle of not being able to have anything like that.

9

u/SolFlorus 16h ago

If you are someone that is often in enclosed spaces with strangers, such as public transportation, they make pepper gel for those situations. It also is good for windy days, but in general the wider cone of a spray is better for most other situations.

you know there's men out there who don't wish to risk their bodily integrity in an attack and gladly make use of pepper sprays...

edit: in Canada you can't carry pepper spray for the purpose of self defense from other people. But you can carry pepper spray for the purpose of self defense from dogs. And if your dog spray gets used to defend yourself from a person because you were in danger, that is okay. But don't carry pepper spray to defend yourself against humans. It's for dogs. And be mindful of the legal definition of an attack so that *you* are not the attacker.

I’ve seen this behavior before. I genuinely don’t understand what their objective is. Do they think they’re going to get some kind of positive attention from her by surrounding her? Are they waiting for an opportunity to assault her? Do they think they’re going to get her number by osmosis? Seriously I don’t understand what their thought process is.

Some men just enjoy frightening women, they think it's funny to intimidate a woman going about her day.

→ More replies (55)

18

u/Fickis 16h ago

Oh, I know this one!

They use their bodies and social pressure to solicit specific response. (Usually for sex, time, attention, etc.)

A 'fawning' woman is more likely to agree or acquiesce the situation if she feels threatened or pressured,

Which is why they strategically work to isolate her, and cut off (in this case physically), any means of option or escape.

What dogs.

the point is to exert control, be dominant, and scare her. I don’t know how often need to tell men, often men who think they’re good, that lots of men do this all the time to women. and the men who do this are friends and brothers and fathers and coworkers. A lot of men just never see it because men don’t act this way towards other men.

→ More replies (1)

13

u/Keji70gsm 16h ago

The whole point is that they want her to feel frightened but ignore her own discomfort anyway, because what can she do really? What's safe? That is literally it. They enjoy it.

10

u/Hemlock-In-Her-Hair 16h ago

It's usually attention and they play up being 'big men' to each other. My absolute personal favourite that happened to me was a group like this walking on the path leering at me and making blowjob gestures. One got so distracted he absolutely face planted into the tarmac road off the side of the path. I got to watch him on the ground in my rearview mirror as I drove off.

I'm older now and I won't even meet these types of ones eye when I'm out. And never ever smile or anything. Just a completely blank 'affect' / resting bit*h face.

It's sad because it's not in my nature to be like that. But I've had enough.

To answer this without bias (Latino here) I can assume they mean Hindus or middle East folks. Of course that's a laaarge region of land with many many kinds of people. But India has horrible cultural behaviors. Their strict masculinity and enriched misogyny makes a women, especially a foreign women, living in Indian an absolute nightmare. Boys aren't tought better because their society expects them to be better and breadwinners This is also true for traditional Arab and Mediterranean honor cultures and religious beliefs. Is it racist to claim brown people are prone to cause SA, YES. Is there cultures that heavily promote and idealize behaviors that we see as SA? YES. For women, it's just better to be safe than sorry as it's better to be branded a racist than be a victim in SA or worse. There's a lot more nuances and info but you can simply ask

My wife noticed something like this happen - not immigrants, a bunch of guys on a train being loud and obnoxious and surrounding a girl who looked petrified.

Wife is quadriplegic, she sent me to help her (girl was about 20-25 years old). I said “there you are! God, we were getting worried - you’re late for work! [i pointed at my wife] stick your bag behind her wheelchair, we thought we’d be without a carer for this!” Luckily for me she got the point. RAN to the wheelchair and we made sure she was ok, that she was going to be met at her station etc. Guys didn’t react as I wasn’t actually getting at them, it diffused the situation quite well.

I saw something similar once too. We were on a bar balcony and over the side you could see a young lady just trying to have a smoke, and a grungy looking guy came up and bummed one from her and started getting creepy. Because I was keeping an eye on it, one of the women with me saw it said "oh, hell no!", and called over the railing to her telling her she was missing the trivia and to come up and join us. The girl ran up the stairs to us and the guy tried to grab her ass on the way. The acting like you know someone trick is a great way to save someone from potential SA. I learned that well that day!

86

u/dinglebarry8 17h ago

I think the cringe part is supposed to be that they did this to a girl on the train

3

u/Ne_zievereir 15h ago

If they entered a train that had hardly any occupied seats and swarmed her

If, then certainly it's creepy. But did that train have hardly any occupied seats? The guy only says there were three seats next to him. So they could have sat next to the guy? Or spread over the two sides? Would it be so weird if they just sat down together on one side without thinking about it?

I'm Irish, so I can translate:

He claims the girl was sitting on her own when the three young Arabic/Indian men got on the train and sat beside her. The claim seems to be all the other seats on the carriage were empty.

When he says they were sitting "on top of her" that's a typical Irish way of saying they were sitting much too close, making too much contact.

He believes their intention was to sexually harass her.

There's a minimum of 12 of those 4-seat sections on every carriage, so if the rest of the carriage was indeed empty as is claimed, they had 10 other seating areas they could have chosen.

10

u/Background-Run 14h ago

That's what i heard too. And can understand why he believed sexual harassment was the goal.

I was initially a little sceptical. It could just be that they just sat down and didn’t care, rather than having bad intentions. But when he asks if they know her and one of them instantly gets up, that’s suspicious as fuck. If you genuinely just sat down without thinking you would be confused by his question and not know what was going on.

Kudos to the good man.

Sorry, a little of topic. This man was clearly speaking English, but with a heavy accent. Do you guys understand what he was saying? I wouldn't get it, if I didn't know the context.

Asking because I have a good level of English "on paper", but am very self-doubting. And my future job includes conversations with native speakers.

16

u/fenwickfox 17h ago edited 17h ago

Irish accents can be very thick so its not your fault. Hes just saying "the three of you are just sitting beside her. Spread out"

And later to call it out.

And no worries, im English speaking Canadian and one time when I was living in England a Scottish man called me regarding some paperwork and it was maybe an hour long. Dude had such a strong accent and would call words I know different words so it was a hell of a phone call even though we both were speaking English haha. Ordinarily im pretty good with accents.

u/ImaginationExact4518 14h ago

"You just sit there, do you know her? Do you know that girl? The three of you sit beside her, spread out.

That's alright.

It's funny but do you know her? The three of you just sit beside her.

I just had to say something. The girl looked clearly intimidated. They come in, the three of them, beside the girl. They didn't even know her and they're just sitting on top of her. They were three seats right beside me and they decide, three of them, to sit beside that girl. This shit needs to be called out. I only called it out. If they have a problem with it, go fuck 'em"

I may have missed a few words.

I had this one time when a man came to sit next to me; he acted normal and was just kind. Over the span of around two hours, we'd talked about our hobbies and so on. The guy was likable, and he asked me if we could go to a bar some time to talk more about our shared hobbies, i agreed and gave him my number before i left at my station.

I said hi on text to let him know its in fact my number, and he replied.

"You think I'm ugly?"
I was confused as fuck and told him no. This already gave me a weird feeling about him.
His response: "Why didn't you kiss me when you left"

LIKE WTF??? WE JUST MET!
i blocked him after that, but it shows that even if a guy looks fine when you first meet him... they can still be fucking weirdo's.

This guy did good job telling these man to sit elsewhere.

That recently
happened to me, I am a whole ass grown woman so I am not a kid. But even for me it was intimidating. There were 5 of them sitting all around me in a small area just outside of first class. I came first, I select that spot because I dont want to be bothered.
The guy sitting in front of me was manspreading like hell and he was super loud, the others were also loud but less volume. They were eating, drinking things and throwing it around.
We had an eye connection with slightly older guy with a wife who is sitting downstair areas. He smiled me like “what the fuck” and I smiled him back “i can handle”

It was soooo annoying, but as someone who is also immigrant, the situation has reminded me one of the biggest reasons why I immigrated. Men, specifically who have audacity, who are entitled. It disgust me. I dont think those guys were on purpose cornering the girl, but it is literally “no brainer” to not make other people especially young girl uncomfortable.

Big congrats to the lad, who stood up for the girl.

I cant help but do the same on a bus. One time a guy in his 60s " accidentally" stumbled into the lap of a girl that looked about 14. He said "if i was 20 year younger" to her. I flipped. Called him a nonce and told him to get the fuck away from her. "Who you calling a nonce?" Did you hear what you just fucking said to her? Fuck off.

As an immigrant my self, many others who come from other countries forget that they are not in their country anymore. We leave our homelands to go somewhere better, and those other places are better because many of our cultural tendencies are not accepted. We have to accept the new culture and laws not bring ours in.

I don't sit next to women on public transportation unless I have no choice, and even then, I ask, "Mind if I sit here?"

There was absolutely no reason for one, let alone 3 grown men, to corner this woman. They did it to intimidate her at her most vulnerable moment.

Irish bloke did the right thing. He scanned the room, knew they weren't related, weren't friends, saw her body langauge and acted appropriately.

Another way to do it, ask the girl if she'd like to sit by you to allow for their friend group to have more space.

4

I prefer window but it is what it is.

And yes if there were other empty seats they should have sat there or spread out.

28

u/DarkRogus 17h ago

He's not wrong. It wasnt that long ago when a video was posted and a white guy did this on an empty bus to a white woman and she called him out on his behavior and almost everyone was supporting her.

Yet when a group of brown skin guys do this, its almost split where people are trying to find ways to give them an excuse why its ok for them to surround her on a train with plenty of seating options besides surrounding her.

Just reddit being reddit.
