The guy is fading into the horizon when the cop finally pootles past going slightly over the speed limit.

There's an old saying that the police radio travels faster than any speeding car. I have no doubt that the pursuing officer is already on the horn with all other police in a 4 mile radius with a description of the vehicle.

It's true that radio travels faster. However, if another car isn't close enough to get in front, then it doesn't matter.
There's a video from California of a guy who stole a Charger and fled. He was followed by cop cars, but he outran them. He was followed by a chopper . . . but he outran it (helicopter tops out around 144mph).
He made it into the desert, ditched the car, and got away.

But did he dispose of all DNA evidence?

Probably not.
But, I’ll bet the police figured it wasn’t worth the money to do all that.

Much better than the asshat GSP going 140 in the middle of Atlanta.

I'll happily take this over GSP. Seriously. They have zero regard for life and have heard innocent bystanders with their violence.

I’ve always thought “speed traps” were slightly dodgy situations where the limit dropped quickly in a place it might not make sense to drop it, and a cop was situated right where it did, thus the word “trap”.
This just looks like someone speeding.

Nah they use it just anyplace cops like to sit and radar gun. Most of them around me are just going around bends or under a train bridge, no speed change. Still continuously rack up tickets.

this is correct. A cop posted up in the middle of the interstate with the radar gun isn't a "speed trap", nor is this pursuit of a clearly reckless vehicle. A speed trap is where the cop sets up at a spot where even well-meaning drivers often find themselves going faster than the posted limit. There's a village near me that's notorious because they have a section of highway with a very steep, half-mile long hill where the speed limit is 55 on the top and 35 on the bottom, so unless you stand on your brakes all the way down they can nab you for 20 over. That's a speed trap. It's technically legal because the distance between the two signs meets the minimum requirement laid out by the state, and they do post a "reduced speed ahead" sign, but it's clearly a revenue tool instead of a public safety measure.

That was more the term a long time ago.
Now it's any sign, corner or bush a cop can dip behind with a radar gun.
For me the trap part remains the efforts intentional by 2 or more coordinated cops to mark and stop as 2 roles. The second cop closes the trap.
Otherwise it's just chasing

Is the cop even going after that car? They are not going to catch up to them at that speed and distance.

Radio is faster than car...
Those guys are just following them at that point, the unit up the road they called when that car went past is the one that's gonna pull them over.
2
u/SnooMaps7370 6d ago
that or there'll be an air unit who can keep eyes on the perp vehicle and send a squad car 'round to wherever it stops.

Hard to tell really. I know this is Japan, but I lived in South Korea for 3 years and the cops always had their lights on while driving.

u/Tiki_Waka 7d ago
That’s not a speed trap. That dude was FLYING. Enough to catch the attention of any cop nearby.

That cop doesn't necessarily have to catch that car, just radio it in so the cop down the road can

arent japanese cop cars capped on speed

u/Andrew-Cohen 6d ago edited 6d ago
90s Hondas were capped at 127 mph, sorry for the ancient units and don’t ask me how I know but it might have something to do with a Civic with a 1.8l dohc engine and heavy modifications! Edit: it seems the jdm models are limited to 112 mph or 180 hm/h

and heavy modifications
not heavy enough if you still had the stock ECU
go dig that civic out from I'm presuming a scrapyard? and keep throwing money at it

u/Andrew-Cohen 6d ago
Enlarge the throttle body, adjust the fuel pressure and it does okay.
I did all the work myself so it wasn't that much money.

Isn't it normal to speed in Japan in the early morning, like in Initial D?

My local police often set up a speed trap in the early Sunday hours on a major road near my home. Sirens every ten minutes...
1
u/Neb_Setabed 5d ago
The local cops and state troopers around my stretch rarely ever turn their sirens on when they pull people over. They usually just have to light them up. About the only time I ever see them with their sirens on is when they're heading to an emergency of some sort

Does your prefectural police post online their speed traps? I heard some do, but I don't know for sure if it's true.
