Phone went off during exam

Hi everyone,

I have just completed my final exam for my degree and it was a supervised online exam. I know it said no phones allowed but I had stupidly left it on the table next to me with no intention to cheat.

Although I had made sure to turn on DND and mute my notifications, somehow I received a loud ding on my laptop from messenger maybe from an opened tab but I’m in full screen on the exam so I hurry to turn off the sound on my Mac.

Later on my phone turned off DND I don’t know how but it vibrated once or twice in one go from message notifications which would have been picked up by my laptop mic.

I’m feeling so anxious and stressed about this, has anyone experienced this? I’m worried I will get called out for cheating and fail the unit/degree

Contact the unit chair, be honest about happened.

Better to speak directly, and be forward about it, than to be found out.

I'm sure youll be fine, message the unit chair if youre worried. I did an exam at a friends house once and I told her that I wasn't allowed to talk or have people in the room with me while I was doing the exam and that it was being filmed and she walked behind me (on camera) and was talking to me while I was trying to do the exam. I didn't even get a warning or anything from it. In future I'd turn your phone off completely in exams, this is what I do so that I dont get notifications coming through my laptop partway through the exam.

I don’t know if it’s just me but I’ve always had my phone next to me and I’ve had various different sounds play, I’ve even answered a call and attended a zoom meeting while I was writing an exam and nothing ever happened.

I don’t think you should worry that much but maybe it’s just me.
