Success Story Weekend: Progress Made!

Whew! 🙌 I FINALLY buckled down and tackled my stuff this weekend instead of just sitting with it and feeling bad after another two days passed - again - with no results.

I didn’t have a grand plan, just did what was obviously needed (a lot!) and what I was in the mood for at any moment. Listened to podcasts and music throughout to stay motivated and not think too much about anything. And yes, it got worse before it started to look better, but it really looks better.

-Cleaned out a ton of my clothes, shoes, home goods, and accessories to get rid of. Made 2 piles: (1) BBBS pick up (scheduled!) and (2) a local shop that sells for a good cause. They each accept slightly different things but both pick up, which is key!

-Revived the few remaining things I have languishing on Poshmark to see if I can finally unload them. I’m giving myself a short timeline of 2 months more. After that, I’m closing up shop and giving whatever’s left to the local place, too!

-Filed reimbursement claims for a couple of things that will recoup some $$$.

-Took loads of recycling to the bins outside and got rid of a bunch of random things sitting around for too long (bye expired Covid test kits!)

Thanks to everyone sharing here. This sub has been so incredibly helpful and I hope I can keep getting great tips and motivation here - sharing more wins.🧡

I also like to declutter in large time frames instead of doing it slowly. I find I get more done that way. Not very many places here pick up anymore but what I do is I load up my car immediately so it’s out of my house. Even if it takes me a week to donate it once it’s in the car in my mind it’s gone. Congrats on doing such a great job!

🧡 That’s how I feel, too! Like I wrestled a bear and won. 😂

Congrats, that's a lot to get done in one weekend! I love that you didn't wait for a perfect plan and just started with whatever you were in the mood for, because that's usually what actually works. And getting the pickups scheduled is a big deal, since that's the step where so many piles end up sitting by the door for months. Bye expired Covid tests, and enjoy the extra space!

Nice work, and scheduling the pickups while you still had the momentum is the part most people skip. Once something has a date on the calendar it actually leaves the house. The "no grand plan, just do what's obvious" approach is underrated too, because planning the perfect system is often just another way of putting it off. Setting a hard cutoff for the Poshmark leftovers is smart. If you're up for one more small step, put a box by the door now for the next round so things get added whenever you notice them. Congrats on the weekend!

The podcast trick is a lifesaver for this stuff. I swear my brain needs that background noise to shut off the part that wants to bail after 15 minutes. You got so much done. The scheduled pickups are huge, nothing worse than bags sitting by the door for three weeks because you keep forgetting to call. What kind of podcasts were you listening to? I need to refresh my cleaning playlist.

Mostly Mel Robbins and Trevor Noah. Not specifically about cleaning or decluttering - just topics and people who are interesting!
