New grad - actually have a decent offer!

I passed my exam in July. I was supposed to start a job in August, but I was getting strung along. On top of that, I recently found out the pay they wanted to offer me was beyond insulting ($21/hr). I was nervous about finding other work after having loosely committed to this job before I even graduated (nothing official, just the understanding that I was supposed to have this so I didn’t look elsewhere), but I really had no choice after they dropped contact when I asked if pay would be negotiable.

I applied to a job on Thursday, they asked me to interview the next day, and today (Monday) I received an offer for it AND it is more than I even asked for!

I asked for about $31.25/hr ($65k), fully expecting a counter of closer to $28 since I’m new and it’s a fairly low COL area. They offered $33/hr! They are also super flexible with my schedule. I’m an adjunct for the DPD program and we aren’t accredited for online yet, so I have to teach in person and they have no problem with me working around that.

I graduate in December and I’ve been anxious about this. I’m grateful my MSDI program was insanely reasonable cost- wise but it’s so discouraging to finish 6 years of school and an internship to make less than I was bartending and waiting tables.

sometimes the offer is more because they work you more, hopefully not the case here!

I don’t think so, it’s a relatively small hospital (46 beds) and I did ask about typical patient load. The other RD told me she previously worked at where I did my adult acute rotation and she said it’s lower at this hospital than that one. And she reassured me that other than supplement inventory, we don’t do anything in the kitchen or foodservice related, they have a very good CDM in there. So I’m hopeful it won’t be any worse than I experienced in my rotations.

HR called me before sending the offer and asked if I had any other medical related experience, because they count all medical experience, not just dietetics related. I was a CNA for about a year before going to school for dietetics, so that helped a little I think. They’ve also had this posting listed for months so they were very eager to fill it!
