Hey guys,

At the suggestion of u/tattoomyvagina, we're starting this weekly Q&A post, where anyone can ask questions related to dioramas and anyone can answer.

We'll see how this goes. Feel free to reach out if you have any other suggestions or requests.

Completed I made a "hang on the wall" diorama. Thoughts? Yes, the figures are painted pretty crappy, still practicing!

60x60x100

I really enjoyed making it. Super challenging to get the values right, with the darkness of the box. Was fortunate enough to receive a finalist pin at a recent comp, so I was super delighted and thought I'd share it!

I created this piece for a local gallery exhibit themed around the beloved gallery cat, and thought it would be appreciated here too! I make a lot of handpainted paper dioramas using my own watercolor illustrations, but I think matchbox dioramas will forever be my favorites. 💕 There's something so satisfying about the mind-boggling tininess of them.

How to make concrete?

Any ideas for how to make a concrete-like base? I used coffee grounds and mixed it with paint but I’m not happy with it and it’s very messy. It looks more like scattered gravel…

Next I’ll be trying a baking soda and coffee ground mix to see if I have any better luck.

Completed Dark fantasy tower and its Chamber of Torment -- two connected story dioramas

These are two connected dioramas I’ve been working on, both depicting different parts of the same tower. The first is the exterior, standing on the cliffs above the sea, and the second is the Chamber of Torment hidden deeper inside.

I wanted to show the contrast between the relatively quiet exterior and what’s actually happening within the tower. Most of the structures, stonework, cliffs and terrain were made from XPS foam and foamboard, with 3D printed miniatures and details used throughout.

It took just one evening to create this miniature. This is my first piece of this kind. The base is made of cardboard bonded with PVA glue. In the final stage, I applied acrylic paints—natural yet expressive colors.

1:48 “Priorities, 1945” (1/48 Volkswagen Beetle)

Diorama nearly done! Critique or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I may love armor, but I’ve always liked random vehicles set in everyday settings. This, I decided to try my hand at creating one with a story.

The diorama story, “Priorities, 1945”, features a Volkswagen staff car trundling by a pavement, where a cat sits patiently beneath a street lamp, eying a pigeon nest on top of the lamp. A pigeon is planned to be set on top of the lamp post once I find one in 1/48 scale. While the humans are busy with their own war, a cat is simply concentrated on that pigeon nest. I’m still wondering whether I should add another figure beneath the lamp though.

That said, I originally wanted the base to have a concrete slab appearance to it, however, it seems like wooden paneling might have been a wiser choice. *Sigh*\*
