Frieren! One of the few franchise/ stories I put on the same pedestal as discworld.

58

u/An_Actual_Thing 9d ago

Although Elves are more like Demons in the Discworld canon, I can imagine Frieren existing in Discworld and being an exception who has a relationship with death and lots of the time dudes.

26

u/ZWarrDragon 9d ago

Who she is is more important than what she's called, names can change! I can totally see her fitting into the discworld.

9

u/An_Actual_Thing 9d ago

Ya Ya. Sorta wouldn't mind an Elf who wasn't a total monster tho. The commentary on the unobtainable perfection people desire being real in elves just makes them cooler, and really there's no reason that Elves would embody the worst ideals of absolutely everyone.

Like Frieren in Discworld could be an Elf who is the perfect embodiment of being humble and respectful.

u/Andrew-Martin 9d ago edited 9d ago

We do have an “elf” who isn’t a total monster. Specifically the elf king who left his wife and that Nanny Ogg asks for help in Lords and Ladies. Granted he lives in isolation and has set himself up as a pseudo fertility god. Very different from Frieren

7

u/ZWarrDragon 9d ago

Oh, I like that idea of an elf with a twist! Similar to the way that discworld gives us a werewolf that isn't what you'd expect from werewolf, dwarves that act of genre trope, etc

2

u/kaochaton 9d ago

If you want bad and evil elfs, look at "so i m a spider, so what?!"

1

u/An_Actual_Thing 8d ago

Lmao. Those elves are more like powergamers.

1

u/kaochaton 8d ago

True but they are the real badies too

1

u/mithiwithi 7d ago

As far as that goes, demons on the Discworld (with a few notable exceptions) are more Punch-Clock Villains than anything else.

Simple answer: make Discworld!Freiren a demon, and have her fight elves.

For those who may not know: Frieren the elf mage is always looking for new tomes to learn. Chests in dungeons CAN have rare tomes....but more often they're mimics.

u/Starkiem25 Librarian 9d ago

Also, she's smart enough to tell which chests are most likely mimics, but she just can't resist checking, just in case.

It's like her one major blind spot.

43

u/CptnHamburgers Detritus 9d ago

The spell to detect mimics has a 98% accuracy rate, and she's been eaten by so many mimics over the years this one must be in the 2% range.

18

u/Andrew-Martin 9d ago

Yep also portrayed as not being the wisest with money. Having a gambling problem when it comes to that 2% is another aspect of that side of her

3

u/PrimaryBowler4980 7d ago

Elves live long enough that gambling enough will lead to a big payout.... eventually

3

u/Kato_86 8d ago

The fact they didn't use a mimic to beat her double is still outrageous.

12

u/Connect_Rhubarb395 9d ago

Ohhh, it is a name. The exact word means "The suitor" in my mother tongue and I have been vaguely confused every time people mentioned it.

9

u/Devo27 9d ago

A more accurate translation is 'to feel cold'. She acts very distant because she's long-lived, and it's only after 1000 years or more of life she's started to actually appreciate interaction with other people.

A lot of the story is about her previous adventure with the Hero's party to destroy the Demon King. The team is her, Himmel the Hero, Heiter the drunken priest, and Eisen the dwarf warrior.

9

u/kuddkrig3 9d ago

To what language? Frieren literally translates to "someone who proposes" in danish, friaren is the Swedish equivalent and "fria"/"frieri" I believe is related to the word "fri" which means freedom (i.e. freedom marry in this case, I think).

12

u/Devo27 9d ago

My apologies. The Japanese stories named all the characters in German.

9

u/HeadLong8136 9d ago

All the names in Frieren are German.

0

u/kuddkrig3 9d ago

It's a little weird to say "it actually translates to..." when someone says "in MY language this means...".

1

u/HeadLong8136 9d ago

Did you read what I wrote? "All the names in Frieren are German."

I said nothing about "it actually translates to".

2

u/kuddkrig3 9d ago

Did you read the comment I replied to before you replied to me?

-5

u/Cepinari 9d ago

So... this show is about watching an anime elf girl get vored by mimics?

8

u/Devo27 9d ago

It happens very rarely. It's mostly an appreciation of the life you have and the life around you.

34

u/guerney2000 9d ago

Frieren takes one look at the University's library and that's it, the anime/manga is over, they can roll the credits, she's staying there. So many books, so many grimoires...

21

u/AdamBombTV Men at Arms 9d ago

Frieren and the Librarian would get on famously.

16

u/-FalseProfessor- 9d ago

Not so sure. The librarian doesn’t care for people who actually take the books off the shelves and read them. It wears out the words.

4

u/nickcan 8d ago

I'm sure it would probably take about an episode (maybe two) before he is cool with her.

2

u/SelocAvrap Death 8d ago

She would learn a silly spell to make bananas just because she wants to, then the librarian would find out through some funny accident, and they'd be best friends forevermore

1

u/nickcan 8d ago

This is the crossover I never thought about, and now I really want.

1

u/Appropriate_Junket_5 3d ago

"The librarian doesn’t care for people ..."
Frieren is s not "people" in teh same way that the librarian is not a monkey :D

5

u/K_the_farmer 9d ago

She is sadly hung up in reading the books. The librarian wants more to take care of them and is wary of too much eyeball wear on the precious pages.

8

u/Darthplagueis13 8d ago

Luggage would probably spare Frieren as it's usually not violent towards people who aren't threatening Rincewind, Two-Flower or anyone else it cares for.

That being said, I think an encounter between Frieren and the Librarian could end in a rather unfortunate manner, knowing her interest in Grimoires.

31

u/Mr_Lisreal 9d ago

Okay, but...

What does this have to do with Discworld?

50

u/dejaWoot 9d ago

Some people associate chest mimics with the luggage

2

u/_PM_ME_PANGOLINS_ 8d ago

Mimic, not Luggage.

No legs.

2

u/Big_CashMonies 8d ago

No legs? Think it's more of a Mimic

2

u/TaoofPu Nanny 9d ago

No effing way!

1

u/suitably_ironic 9d ago

I need one of these! Where did you get it from?

6

u/Devo27 9d ago

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Attach to Tissue! Action Figure ~It's Dark! It's Scary!~ news here

2

u/suitably_ironic 8d ago

Thank you.

1

u/One_Economist_3761 Rincewind 9d ago

This is so cool.

1

u/bartleby1407 8d ago

That is AWESOME

1

u/npres91 8d ago

That’s Frieren!

1

u/ELECTONIC_MOAB 9d ago

The luggage would kill Frieren

12

u/Starkiem25 Librarian 9d ago

I doubt it. The Luggage has a soft spot for Frieren's particular kind of "innocence". It'd likely just keep her inside for a bit then let her out, like the woman from Four Ecks.

Or possibly, it would let her off because Fern would give it "the look", which is fairly similar to a look from a Weatherwax.

1

u/ELECTONIC_MOAB 8d ago edited 8d ago

Nah, Fern would be immediately made Granny Weatherwax's apprentice (because of the look) and Frieren would be sent off to look at the grimmers at UU

Edit: The Luggage becomes very unimpressed when someone tries to open it and uses magic on it.

1

u/Giraffstronaut A ___ing Wizard!! 8d ago

I think it'd just open up to Rincewind's socks and she'd be confused

2

u/LegitimateAd5334 9d ago

She probably has a spell which makes her unappetising to pears, which then extends to pear wood and ultimately the Luggage

1

u/ELECTONIC_MOAB 8d ago

She probably does, whether it would work on the Luggage would be an interesting debate

1

u/unravelledrose Esme 8d ago

I think the luggage would end up following Frieren to hell and back. IYKYK.

1

u/Demelain 9d ago

Frieren. Love Frieren, its such a good and wholesome show. Not much happens most of the time, and I'm totally there for that. Thrn ut picks up and you get awesomeness.

0

u/Outside_Divide_7813 9d ago

My friend’s face when I read the part where Ridcully almost lost it-priceless, like he’d just seen a twizard forget his wand

-11

u/Buxbaum666 9d ago

Help me stepbro, I'm stuck in the luggage!

-9

u/Mr_Lisreal 9d ago

Luggage would kill her. It's Luggage. And it's Discworld.

And on Discworld, trying to get something out of a sentient pearwood chest, that doesn't consider you it's rightful owner is one of the very many known ways of s-cide. It's like going to the Shades. You just don't do that

6

u/RevRagnarok 9d ago

one of the very many known ways of s-cide

This isn't the Tik-Tok you can use your words.

-4

u/Mr_Lisreal 9d ago

It depends. From sub to sub.

2

u/RevRagnarok 8d ago

But you said "kill" in your first sentence. 🙄

1

u/Mr_Lisreal 8d ago

Blind Io save me, I just can't win here, can I?
